Pact hinges on seat division

Pact hinges on seat division

KEPALA BATAS: Seat allocations in the upcoming Sabah elections must be properly ironed out if Barisan Nasional, which is an opposition party in the state, is to work with ruling coalition Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).
Though open to the idea, Barisan chairman Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said Umno has a principle where the party will contest any seat that it had won even if its representative later defected to another party.
In the 2020 Sabah elections, several seats originally allotted for Umno-Barisan were manipulated at the last minute, resulting in four seats being contested by ex-Umno members who had jumped to another party, said Ahmad Zahid, who is also Umno president.
He said Barisan then had 14 state assemblymen while GRS had 11 but due to defections after the election, GRS and Pakatan formed the state government with 42 assemblymen.
'The seats won by Barisan should rightfully belong to us, as they (the former Umno leaders) defected,' he added.
'The door is neither completely closed nor fully opened, allowing for cooperation between central and state-level parties to prevent the idea of 'Sabah for Sabahans', as we are part of Malaysia.'
He said 'asobiah' should not be encouraged, which is an Arabic word referring to narrow tribalism or self-serving communal interests.
'The country has an inclusive approach to foster collaboration among political parties so that the states can work alongside Putrajaya to advance their development,' he said.
Barisan is now carefully examining the announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim that discussions were ongoing on a possible collaboration between Pakatan and GRS.
During his May 11 visit to Sabah, Anwar had met Sabah Chief Minister and GRS chairman Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, and talked about the possibility that GRS could still work with Sabah Barisan and Sabah Pakatan.
This was after Barisan and Pakatan had announced on May 9 that they had formed a pact to contest the Sabah polls together.
GRS consists of eight parties, including Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah, Parti Bersatu Sabah, Sabah Progressive Party, Sabah Star, United Sabah National Organisation, Parti Cinta Sabah, Liberal Democratic Party and Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah.
Sabah Pakatan has four parties – United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation, PKR, DAP and Amanah, while Sabah Barisan includes Umno, MCA, MIC and PBRS.

Ex-MACC chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad joins Umno

BUTTERWORTH: Former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad has joined Umno, reports said. According to Utusan Malaysia, Dzulkifli submitted his membership form to Merbau Kudong Umno branch chief Mohd Ramli Daud during a ceremony in Sungai Dua last night. "I believe the time is right for me to get involved in a political party. I've officially become an Umno member. "I will continue my efforts to help the people of Tasek Gelugor, just as I have done before through my own initiative and office (Tan Sri Dzulkifli's Office or TSDZ). "What matters most is continuing to serve the community here, regardless of race or religion," he was quoted as saying. He said he chose Umno because of its historical significance and expressed hope of bringing a fresh perspective to the party. "Umno needs to return as a unifying force for the Malay community and Malaysians as a whole," he said. Dzulkifli had previously hinted at entering politics during the 15th General Election in 2022 and was widely speculated to contest the Tasek Gelugor parliamentary seat. However, those rumours did not materialise.

Salleh's ‘friendly contest' proposal tactical, says analyst

Universiti Malaysia Sabah's Bilcher Bala says Sabah Umno treasurer Salleh Said Keruak's proposal appears aimed at discouraging the emergence of proxy independent candidates. PETALING JAYA : Sabah Umno treasurer Salleh Said Keruak's call for parties to allow its candidates to engage in 'friendly contests' with each other at the state's upcoming polls is aimed at reducing internal friction among coalitions, according to an analyst. Bilcher Bala of Universiti Malaysia Sabah said the former chief minister's call for a 'planned, respectful arrangement' may be a tactical effort to defuse tensions, manage internal competition, and prevent conflicts within the Barisan Nasional-Pakatan Harapan (BN-PH) alliance at state level. Bilcher Bala. 'The understanding (is) that whoever wins, the seat remains part of the coalition,' Salleh had said in a recent Facebook post. Bilcher said that while the strategy is intended to maintain internal unity within the BN-PH alliance, 'it does not explicitly suggest that BN-PH will go separately from GRS.' He said that GRS could benefit if Salleh's proposal is implemented. 'For GRS, this approach could reduce tensions and ensure that the (proposed BN-PH-GRS) coalition remains strong and united, which is crucial for winning seats and forming a stable government,' said Bilcher. However, he cautioned that public perception must be managed properly. 'Voters might appreciate the effort to reduce internal conflicts and present a united front, but they could also be sceptical about the effectiveness of such arrangements. 'The key will be clear communication and transparency to ensure voters understand the rationale behind the friendly contests,' he said. Lee Kuok Tiung. Another analyst, Lee Kuok Tiung, however, voiced his concerns. He acknowledged that the arrangement could work, 'depending on whether leaders can reach an understanding.' However, he said, it could disadvantage those who have consistently attacked GRS and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), and open them up to 'counter-attacks'.
