Having joined from Barnsley at the start of the 2018/19 campaign, Mallan netted a brace in his first appearance in Leith - a 6-1 rout of Faroese minnows NSI Runavik in the first round of the competition.
With Hibs back in the Europa League, Mallan is backing old pal Gray to make his mark from the dugout this time around.
Mallan told SunSport: "I joined Hibs on the Friday and the following Thursday made my debut in Europe - and scored twice!
"I actually scored twice in the second leg as well. Four goals in Europe in my first two games for the club was pretty special.
"I sat next to Davie in the dressing room for years and he's a top guy.
"It wouldn't surprise me to see him do well in Europe because he has picked up plenty of experience of it as a player.
"He also showed last season what a great manager he can be. Hopefully the draw is kind to them and they get to the group stages."
Neil Lennon's Hibs made it through to the third round in 2018, eventually exiting after a 3-0 aggregate defeat to Molde.
In the Edinburgh club's defence, the Norwegians did have a young Erling Haaland in their ranks.
The Man City superstar netted twice in the decisive second leg and Mallan said: "Haaland actually missed the first leg in Edinburgh because he was away having a medical.
David Gray opens up on THAT Cup Final winner for Hibs against Rangers and how he felt like a 'wild horse' as he celebrated
"Unfortunately for us, he was back in for the second leg, scored a brace and got an assist.
"He was the decisive factor and has gone on to be an incredible player. You could tell he was special and we were just unlucky he didn't move on sooner!"

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy: I've no regrets over Postecoglou appointment
Levy, flanked by new chief executive Vinai Venkatesham in an interview posted on the club's YouTube channel, said he did not make the 'emotionally difficult' decision to fire Postecoglou on his own. Ultimately losing 22 Premier League matches and finishing 17th cost Postecoglou his job after two years at the club. Europa League success was not enough to save Ange Postecoglou's job (Nick Potts/PA) 'I don't regret appointing Ange,' said Levy. 'In his first season we finished fifth and in the second season we were over the moon to win a trophy, but we need to compete in all competitions. We felt that we needed a change. 'It was a collective decision. It wasn't my decision. We do everything together. 'Emotionally it was difficult, but we believe we have made the right decision for the club.' Levy added: 'We've won a European trophy, but it's not enough. 'It's what we haven't done that is more important. We need to win the league. We want to win the Premier League. We want to win the Champions League. We want to win.' Thomas Frank, right, is Ange Postecoglou's successor (Nigel French/PA) Tottenham have appointed Brentford boss Thomas Frank as Postecoglou's successor and Levy hopes a new man with new ideas will help get the club back on track. 'Whenever you have a new coach, it is always a fresh start. You have different ideas,' he added. 'We want to build on the success of winning a trophy last season. 'One of the things that stood out to me with Thomas — clearly highly intelligent, great communicator, super human being, plus all of the other technical aspects that are important.'

Tottenham in regular contact with stranded Manor Solomon amid Israel conflict
The 25-year-old Israel international got married to long-term partner Dana Voshina last week, but the newlyweds have not been able to leave after Israeli airspace was closed to civilian flights. Having recovered from a serious knee injury, Solomon spent last season on loan at Leeds, helping the club win the Sky Bet Championship title and secure promotion back to the Premier League. After nearly a year without football, I couldn't have asked for a better comeback season and a better ending. I really don't know what the future holds, but I do know that Leeds United will forever be in my you again, fans, for the unforgettable past few weeks and… — Manor Solomon (@Manorsolomon) May 10, 2025 A Tottenham spokesperson confirmed to the PA news agency: 'We are constantly in regular dialogue with all our players regarding their wellbeing and welfare.' Solomon, who had a loan spell at Fulham before he joined Spurs from Shakhtar Donetsk in the summer of 2023, is set to return to the north London club for the start of pre-season training in early July. New boss Thomas Frank will be looking to shape his squad ahead of the new campaign, having taken over following the departure of Ange Postecoglou. Spurs have already completed the permanent signing of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich on a six-year deal following a successful loan spell. Despite finishing 17th in the Premier League, their lowest-ever finish, Spurs have qualified for the Champions League courtesy of their 1-0 win over Manchester United in the Europa League final, which proved to be the last match in charge for Postecoglou.
