Prepare to Cry: Detroit Mom Says The City Rebuffed Her As She Tried to Shield Her Babies From Freezing Weather

Yahoo13-02-2025

A Detroit mother of two is distraught after having to make arrangements to bury her children after they died from something that was preventable in America. In fact, the mother claims she sought city assistance to save their life but to no avail.
Tateona Williams, 29, told FOX 2 Detroit with tears down her face that she and her five kids were sleeping in a 2002 Chrysler Town and Country minivan earlier this month when tragedy struck. The report says she resorted to the vehicle for shelter for the past three months after being unable to receive help from Detroit's Coordinated Assistance Model. The agency is a referral system to help unhoused people find 'fair and equitable way to housing,' per the website. She also tried the city's homeless solutions agency, hotels and other acquaintances.
However, her efforts were unsuccessful and with a brutal winter approaching, her options were running out.
'And every time I call they said they don't have a bed, they don't have family beds,' she said via FOX, adding that the number of children led her to be turned away.
She said she also tried contacting her children's father, Darnell Currie Sr., but he allegedly gave her an excuse as to why he couldn't house the children. Despite her claims, Currie gave a tearful interview to WXYZ explaining that he was only asked to watch his kids but was never told why or the fact they were homeless.
'She just asked can I get 'em for a couple days, but I told her I'm working and all that and I'm out here. We're not close to each other. So, I couldn't, but she knows all my family is right around the corner from her,' said Currie to ABC 7 News.
Unfortunately, Williams' efforts to save her children herself came at a heartbreaking cost. Williams told local reporters Sunday evening, the van had run out of gas and turned off at some point as the family slept. When she woke up Monday morning, she discovered her 2-year-old and 9-year-old were not breathing. The two children were pronounced dead at the hospital. The report says a medical examiner is still determining their cause of death but police suspect freezing temperatures contributed to the incident. Weather reports say Sunday evening's forecast was a low of 22 degrees.
Mayor Mike Duggan called for a review of the Detroit outreach program for homelessness after discovering Williams' story. He said in a press conference that just down the road, a shelter with available beds was open but with a lack of outreach teams, it was likely no one could connect Williams to the facility. The mayor's review will take two weeks to complete, per the report.
In the meantime, Williams' family organized a GoFundMe to help the mother get on her feet and preserve the lives of her remaining children. It's unclear where she is taking shelter now.

Community rallies as teenager killed in Portsmouth building collapse is identified

The Portsmouth community is rallying as the identity of the teenager killed on June 7 during a graduation party at the Portuguese American Citizens Club has become public. In an obituary posted by Memorial Funeral Home, Kelly Nevitt, 15, is described as "in every way, extraordinary." "She had a voice that could stop you in your tracks and a gift for performing that lit up the stage. Musical theater was her passion, and she shone in her favorite roles – the sassy Rizzo in 'Grease' and the spirited Sister Mary Lazarus in 'Sister Act.' Whether she was singing, dancing, or laughing with friends, Kelly's presence was magnetic," the obituary noted. An animal lover, Nevitt owned a dog and cat and "was known for her quick wit, big heart, and boundless compassion." "She was the funniest, kindest, most loyal friend – the kind of person who made everyone feel welcome and important. She had a special way of lifting others up, always reminding people how much they meant to her," according to the obituary. Nevitt is the daughter of Sharon Nevitt. Nevitt was killed when the concrete landing connecting an exterior stairwell to the second-floor entrance of the Portsmouth Portuguese American Citizens Club building detached from the main structure, trapping two girls underneath. The incident happened during a graduation celebration attended by about 75 people. Portsmouth police said on June 9 that the other girl trapped under the concrete, identified as a 17-year-old, was in critical condition. No update on her condition has since been released. Additionally, a 19-year-old woman from Little Compton was recently released from the hospital after being treated for her injuries, and a 46-year-old man from Portsmouth was not injured enough to be hospitalized. A 49-year-old woman from Merrillville, Indiana, remained in the hospital, where she was being treated for serious injuries. On June 11, a GoFundMe was started in memory of Kelly Nevitt. In the write-up accompanying the fundraiser, it was noted that Nevitt was a freshman at Portsmouth High School and that "her smile and contagious laughter could brighten anyone's day, and her spirit was full of hope, warmth, and compassion." As of the evening of June 11, the fund had received just shy of $5,000. Additionally, Portsmouth coffee shop Grafik Coffee announced on June 10 that it had made "Portsmouth Strong" stickers that would be sold for $10 apiece, with the proceeds to be split evenly among the families of the deceased and the injured. A day after that announcement, the business said that due to high demand, it had ordered another 500 stickers beyond the initial order of 2,000. St. Barnabas Church in Portsmouth has also announced that a Night of Remembrance will be held on Friday, June 13, at 7 p.m., which, while open to all, will give preferential seating to students. It will also be live streamed at According to the obituary, "A Celebration of Kelly's life" will be held on Monday, June 16, at 2 p.m. at Green Valley Country Club, 371 Union St., Portsmouth, "where friends and loved ones are invited to gather and honor the incredible life of a girl who gave us so much in such a short time." The obituary asks that "in honor of Kelly's compassion and creativity, donations may be made in her memory to The Newport Children's Theater, – continuing the love she so freely gave." Pam Bondi Warns Of More Arrests In California Amid Protests Against Immigration Raids

Attorney General Pam Bondi said people who loot or assault law enforcement will be subject to arrest after the Trump administration called in troops to Los Angeles against Gov. Gavin Newsom's (D) wishes. 'President Trump is going to make America safe again. We're going to protect Americans, and that includes Californians. If Gavin Newsom isn't going to protect them, we are,' Bondi told Lawrence Jones III on 'Fox & Friends' Wednesday. 'If you loot a business in California during this, we're charging you with robbery under the Hobbs Act,' Bondi warned. 'No longer are the days of non-prosecution for looting. It's a criminal act. You've seen on the news, all these stores being burglarized, vandalized.' 'All of our police officers, all of our federal, state, local law enforcement officers, being abused out there trying to keep California safe. Jointly, we've all made over 190 arrests, more coming. If you hit a police officer, if you assault a police officer, state or federal, we are coming after you,' Bondi continued. Bondi joins the litany of Republicans, including President Donald Trump, painting a picture of a lawless Los Angeles where 'riots' are underway and 'insurrectionists' are taking over, inviting immediate comparisons to the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, that aimed to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The demonstrations in Los Angeles, which are largely peaceful, popped up as a result of Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids across California. Trump signed an order authorizing at least 2,000 National Guard troops to be sent to Los Angeles, despite Newsom's opposition, on Saturday. Then the Pentagon deployed an additional 2,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines. Since the start of the protests, the Los Angeles Police Department has arrested 385 people, USA Today reported on Wednesday. Moreover, ICE agents have detained 330 immigrants in Los Angeles so far, White House officials said. Mayor Karen Bass announced a curfew in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday that is set to continue for an unspecified amount of time. Newsom struck back at the Trump administration on Monday by filing a lawsuit over Trump's commandeering of the state's National Guard troops. The following day, he filed a motion seeking an emergency order to stop the Trump administration's 'unlawful militarization of Los Angeles.' Bass and Newsom have said that the federal government's actions are escalating tensions and testing how far this administration can take authoritarianism. 'This was provoked by the White House. The reason why? We don't know,' Bass said at a press conference on Wednesday. 'I posit that maybe we are part of a national experiment to determine how far the federal government can go in reaching in and taking over power from a governor, power from a local jurisdiction.' She also claimed the Trump administration's actions show it is deliberately 'trying to cause fear and panic.' In an urgent address on Tuesday evening, Newsom said the issue is bigger than Los Angeles. 'When Donald Trump sought blanket authority to commandeer the National Guard, he made that order apply to every state. This is about all of us. California may be first, but it clearly will not end here,' he said. Newsom called Trump 'a president who wants to be bound by no law or constitution.' 'Authoritarian regimes begin by targeting people who are least able to defend themselves,' Newsom continued. 'But they do not stop there. Trump and his loyalists, they thrive on division because it allows them to take more power and exert even more control.'
