May 16 (UPI) -- A new report says rice sold in U.S. stores contains toxic heavy metals, including arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury.
The report, released by Healthy Babies, Bright Futures, found arsenic in 100% of rice samples tested from stores in 20 metropolitan areas, including New York City, Los Angeles and Miami, CBS News reported.
What's more, 1 in 4 samples exceeded the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's arsenic limit for infant rice cereal, which is 100 parts per billion.
That rule was set in 2021, but it only applies to rice cereal made for babies, not to the rice that the rest of the family eats.
"No such limit exists for rice itself -- the bags and boxes of rice served at family meals -- despite it being widely consumed by infants and toddlers," the authors note.
The study tested 145 popular brands of rice, including Trader Joe's and Ben's and Goya. On average, total heavy metal levels across the samples ranged from 63 to 188 ppb, with some going as high as 240 ppb, CBS News said.
Arsenic showed up at the highest levels, followed by cadmium. Lead and mercury were found in smaller amounts.
Responding to the report, the USA Rice Federation acknowledged consumers' concerns.
"We know that arsenic in food is alarming for many consumers and that you may have questions," the group said in a statement emailed to CBS News. "And while we do not agree that there is a public health safety issue as a result of trace amounts of arsenic in rice, we will continue to work with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ensure the U.S. rice supply meets any threshold established."
The FDA and National Institutes of Health note that inorganic arsenic -- the form found in higher amounts in this study -- is more toxic than the naturally occurring kind. The Environmental Protection Agency also classifies it as a carcinogen, or a cancer-causing substance.
To lower your exposure, the report offered three tips:
• Cook rice like pasta. Use 6 to 10 cups of water per 1 cup of rice, then drain any extra before eating.
• Try alternatives. Foods like quinoa, barley and couscous have lower levels of heavy metals.
• Choose rice wisely. White rice from California, sushi rice, Thai jasmine and Indian Basmati tend to have lower levels of heavy metals and elements. Avoid brown rice, white rice grown in the southeastern United States and arborio rice from Italy, which were shown to have higher levels.

Will the upcoming norovirus season be just as early and active as the past year? While the answer may be anyone's guess right now, federal health officials recently warned that the dominant strain of the contagious virus — the leading cause of vomiting, diarrhea, and foodborne illness in the U.S. — has changed between the 2022-2023 and 2024-2025 seasons. 'GII.17 has caused 75 percent of all norovirus outbreaks during the 2024–25 season so far, thereby replacing GII.4 as the predominant norovirus outbreak strain in the United States,' Centers for Disease Control researchers wrote in an article published this month by the agency's Emerging Infectious Diseases journal. This past season also started at the earlier date of October, as opposed to December. GII.17 also drove a record wave of outbreaks. But, what all of this might mean going forward needs further research. 'Additional sequence analysis of complete GII.17 genomes and identification of cross-protective neutralizing antibodies of GII.17 compared with GII.4 viruses could help clarify whether GII.17 viruses will persist. Continued surveillance is needed to determine if this genotype remains the dominant genotype, as well as whether the norovirus season continues to start earlier than previous years,' they wrote. A spokesperson for the agency told CBS News that there are 'currently insufficient historic data to predict whether norovirus GII.17 will remain the dominant genotype and lead to an earlier onset of the norovirus season later this year.' They pointed to a surge of GII.17 strains in Asia and Europe in 2014 that was followed by no reports of a change to seasonality, and noted that there has been no clear evidence to prove that GII.17's emergence was the cause of a change to the norovirus season last year. Still, this past season reached the worst levels in a decade. There were 91 suspected or confirmed outbreaks during the first week of December, which Yale Medicine said exceeded the number of outbreaks during the same week in any year since 2012. The majority were the GII.7 strain. In years when there is a new strain of the virus, there can be 50 percent more norovirus illness. Cases continued to tick up months into this year. By May 7, there were 2,571 outbreaks. During the same time last year, there were only 1,358. 'The total number of outbreaks reported during the 2024 to 2025 seasonal year is above the range reported during the same period during the 2012 to 2020 and 2021 to 2024 seasonal years,' the CDC said. Cases have fallen markedly since January, and are now at low levels. While the outbreaks occur throughout the year, they are the most common from November to April as people head indoors and it's easier to spread norovirus through infected particles. Anyone who consumes raw shellfish is also at risk of contracting it. Infection can be deadly largely among adults aged 65 and up, but anyone can get sick. Children younger than 5 years old and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop severe infections. There are 900 deaths on average each year and between 19 and 21 million illnesses. There's no specific treatment for norovirus, but most people recover with a period of up to three days. 'The norovirus can spread so quickly, but also, as we already talked about, norovirus can be very — it's usually very fast. So yeah, if people are taking care of themselves, we leave them alone,' explained Dr. Joanna Bisgrove, a family physician at Rush University Medical Center. 'But if it keeps going, we're like, maybe this isn't norovirus, and we need to do other things.'

(NewsNation) — In Texas, a bill has reached Gov. Greg Abbott's desk requiring warning labels on packaged foods like Doritos, Mountain Dew and M&M's that contain certain additives. The bill, passed unanimously by the Texas state Senate, would mandate labels on products that include synthetic dyes, titanium dioxide, bleached flour, partially hydrogenated oils, melatonin and various food colorings. In April, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced plans to phase out petroleum-based synthetic dyes by the end of 2026. Texas investigating cereal giant Kellogg over food dye use Kennedy has advocated for the Texas legislation. 'Secretary Kennedy encourages states to promote healthy practices and enhance consumer transparency in food labeling,' an HHS official told NewsNation. 'Americans deserve to know what's in their food, so they can make informed choices for themselves and their families.' However, several companies and organizations, including the Texas Retailers Association, have criticized portions of the bill. Texas considers banning products infused with THC derived from hemp, and retailers are worried 'The food labeling provision in this bill casts an incredibly wide net, triggering warning labels on everyday grocery items based on assertions that foreign governments have banned such items, rather than on standards established by Texas regulators or the USDA,' the organization said in a statement. Newly-Listed Sionna Therapeutics Touts Positive Data From Lung Disease Candidate In Healthy Volunteer Trial

Sionna Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:SION) released data from its Phase 1 trials of SION-719 and SION-451, the company's first-in-class nucleotide-binding domain 1 (NBD1) stabilizers, in healthy volunteers. One hundred subjects were dosed in the SION-719 trial, and 110 subjects were dosed in the SION-451 trial. Data Highlights Both NBD1 stabilizers were generally well tolerated and achieved pharmacokinetic (PK) concentration targets established using Sionna's preclinical cystic fibrosis (CF) human bronchial epithelial (CFHBE) data reinforce the potential of both NBD1 stabilizers to provide clinically meaningful benefit for CF patients, including the potential for wild-type CFTR function, either as an add-on to standard of care (SOC), or in a proprietary dual combination with complementary modulators. Both compounds were generally well tolerated in the Phase 1 trials. There were no serious adverse events, treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) that led to discontinuation of the drug, or dose-limiting TEAEs observed. Most TEAEs were mild to moderate. One Grade 1 TEAE related to liver function tests (LFTs) was observed in a SION-451-treated subject who tested positive for influenza; no TEAEs related to LFTs were observed in the other cohorts of SION-451. There were no TEAEs related to LFTs in SION-719-treated subjects. The data from Part C of each trial support the use of a tablet formulation in future studies and indicate that both compounds can be dosed in a fed or fasted state. SION-719 and SION-451 achieved the desired target PK concentrations at multiple doses twice daily. Both stabilizers met exposure thresholds that can provide clinically meaningful benefit if administered as an add-on to SOC or in a proprietary dual combination with complementary modulators. Next Steps For SION-719: Sionna is progressing SION-719 into a Phase 2a POC trial evaluating the compound as an add-on to SOC in CF patients. Sionna is on track to initiate this trial in the second half of 2025, with topline data anticipated in mid-2026. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the Investigational New Drug (IND) application for SION-719. The first subject has been dosed in a midazolam drug-drug interaction (DDI) study to confirm that SION-719 can be dosed in combination with the SOC according to its label. The study will be completed before the Phase 2a trial is initiated. Next Steps For SION-451: Sionna plans to initiate a Phase 1 healthy volunteer dual combination trial evaluating SION-451 combined with SION-2222 (galicaftor) and SION-109. The trial will assess the safety, tolerability, and PK of varying doses of the dual combinations. It will inform the selection of a dual combination for a Phase 2b trial in CF patients. Sionna is on track to initiate the healthy volunteer trial in the second half of 2025, with topline data expected in mid-2026. In February, Sionna Therapeutics closed its upsized initial public offering of 12.18 million shares at $18.00 per share, with approximately $219.2 million in gross proceeds.
