South Dakota coalition forms to oppose Medicaid cuts

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) – A new coalition of healthcare professionals, patient advocates, rural leaders and small business owners from across the state is launching 'Hands Off Medicaid – South Dakota' to oppose proposed federal cuts to Medicaid and ACA subsidies.

'This bill represents a complete retreat from decades of bipartisan progress in expanding access to health care,' said Earl Pomeroy, former North Dakota Congressman and Insurance Commissioner in a press release.
The group emphasized the proposed cuts would be especially harmful to rural South Dakota health centers.
More than 147,000 South Dakotans currently rely on Medicaid, according to the South Dakota Department of Social Services (DSS).
'Medicaid gives people access to lifesaving medications and treatments like insulin, asthma inhalers, prenatal care, and cancer screenings. For almost 27,000 South Dakotans, this bill means losing coverage entirely.' said Ben Hanson, Head of Government Affairs for the American Cancer Society – South Dakota in a press release.
The coalition formed after the U.S. House passed a budget to cut Medicaid coverage, which would pull coverage from thousands, hurt rural hospital funding, and threaten mental health and addiction services–despite only 9% of SD voters supporting the cuts.
'When coverage rates fall, rural health centers lose critical funding — putting access to primary care, maternal care, dental services, and behavioral health at risk for everyone in those communities.' said Shelley Ten Napel, CEO of the Community HealthCare Association of the Dakotas in a press release.
The coalition plans to continue expanding in the coming weeks and months, and urges South Dakotans to contact Senators Mike Rounds and John Thune about protecting Medicaid as the budget bill heads to the U.S. Senate.

Concerns that potential cuts to Medicaid could cut independence

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — Three million people across the Commonwealth rely on Medicaid services every day. 'That's about one quarter of our population,' said Francine Hogan, the director of Vision of Equality. In that quarter — thousands of Pennsylvanians with disabilities. 'These services are not optional,' she added. 'They are essential to the quality of life, personal freedom and family stability in our disability community.' People with intellectual and developmental disabilities joined Hogan at the State Capitol for a press conference Monday afternoon. They shared how Medicaid service has changed their lives. 'Without Medicaid, I knew something was missing in my life,' said Ernie Roundtree. 'That I needed extra support services to take the places. Now with Medicaid, I ended up going places I've never been to.' Nicolette Fenello shared, 'Because of these services, I was able to read and write by kindergarten, allowing me to be the first I.D.D individual in my school to be fully integrated into a regular classroom.' Jean Searle said, 'I bought a three-bedroom house of my own and I'm doing it all by myself with help and support.' All three of these self-advocates say cuts to Medicaid would 'cut' their independence. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Dan Miller of Allegheny County. 'The reality for it is that Medicaid is essential. Medicaid is life sustaining. Medicaid is imperative. Medicaid promises that are made and promises that must be kept.' The potential cuts to Medicaid funding would also impact healthcare workers — cutting thousands of jobs across the state. Trump pushes 'Big, Beautiful Bill' as solution to four years of Biden failures: 'Largest tax cut, EVER'

President Donald Trump turned to social media on Monday evening to sell Americans on his vision for the "Big, Beautiful Bill," calling it an opportunity to turn the U.S. around after what he called "four disastrous years" under former President Joe Biden. The House passed the spending bill in late May and it is now in the Senate's hands. "We will take a massive step to balancing our Budget by enacting the largest mandatory Spending Cut, EVER, and Americans will get to keep more of their money with the largest Tax Cut, EVER, and no longer taxing Tips, Overtime, or Social Security for Seniors — Something 80 Million Voters supported in November," Trump said in a post on Truth Social. "It will unleash American Energy by expediting permitting for Energy, and refilling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. It will make American Air Travel GREAT AGAIN by purchasing the final Air Traffic Control System." The president said the bill includes the construction of The Gold Dome, which he says will secure American skies from adversaries. The bill will also secure the border by building more of the wall and "supercharging the deportation of millions of Criminal Illegals" that he said Biden allowed into the U.S. White House: Dems Have 'Never Been More Radical, Out Of Touch' After Voting Against 'Big, Beautiful Bill' "It will kick millions of Illegals off Medicaid, and make sure SNAP is focused on Americans ONLY! It will also restore Choice and Affordability for Car purchases by REPEALING Biden's EV Mandate, and all of the GREEN NEW SCAM Tax Credits and Spending," Trump wrote. "THE ONE, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL also protects our beautiful children by stopping funding for sick sex changes for minors." Read On The Fox News App The Senate returned to Washington on Monday, and in his post, Trump called on his Republican allies in Congress to work quickly to get the bill on his desk before July 4. In a separate post, Trump addressed what he referred to as false statements about the bill, reiterating that it is the "single biggest Spending Cut in History." Gop Holdouts Sound Alarm On $36T Debt Crisis As Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill' Passes House Vote He noted that there will not be any cuts to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid, adding they will be saved from "the incompetence of the Democrats." "The Democrats, who have totally lost their confidence and their way, are saying whatever comes to mind — Anything to win!" Trump said. "They suffered the Greatest Humiliation in the History of Politics, and they're desperate to get back on their game, but they won't be able to do that because their Policies are so bad, in fact, they would lead to the Destruction of our Country and almost did. "The only 'cutting' we will do is for Waste, Fraud, and Abuse, something that should have been done by the Incompetent, Radical Left Democrats for the last four years, but wasn't," he concluded. House Gop Unveils Medicaid Work Requirements In Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill' Senate Republicans will get their turn to parse through the colossal package and are eying changes that could be a hard sell for House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., who can only afford to lose three votes. Congressional Republicans are in a dead sprint to get the megabill — filled with Trump's policy desires on taxes, immigration, energy, defense and the national debt — onto the president's desk by early July. If passed in its current state, the bill is expected to add roughly $3 trillion to the national debt, including interest, according to the Committee for Responsible Federal Budget. Governor travels to Alaska to attend energy summit, meet with federal officials

Jun. 2—SANTA FE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is racking up frequent flier miles, as she departed Sunday for a three-day energy summit in Alaska. The governor, who led a two-week trade mission to Japan and Singapore in April, will meet with top Trump administration officials while attending the sustainable energy conference in Anchorage. Specifically, she plans to meet with Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin about possible partnerships between the federal government and New Mexico, according to the Governor's Office. "New Mexico's thriving economy is powered by our leadership in advanced energy and manufacturing," Lujan Grisham said in a statement, citing New Mexico's efforts in the areas of geothermal and hydrogen energy, along with steps aimed at reducing carbon emissions. The state recently passed North Dakota to become the second-highest oil-producing state in the country — behind only Texas — and is also a major exporter of natural gas. In recent interviews, the governor has made it clear she intends to forge relationships with Trump administration officials when possible, even while criticizing Republican-backed plans to trim spending on Medicaid and other programs. While in Alaska, the governor will lead a delegation that also includes state Economic Development Secretary Rob Black, Environment Secretary James Kenney and Caroline Buerkle, the deputy chief of operations for the Governor's Office. As an official state trip, the delegation's travel costs will be paid for by taxpayer dollars, said Lujan Grisham spokeswoman Jodi McGinnis Porter. The fourth annual Alaska Sustainable Energy Conference will also feature speeches by officials from several national laboratories, including both Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories, according to the conference's website. Per the state Constitution, Lt. Gov. Howie Morales will serve as acting governor until Lujan Grisham returns to New Mexico on Wednesday.
