Now this former Arsenal forward is serving time for drug smuggling. On the way: The reason Jay Emmanuel-Thomas is now a former footballer is because of the story you're about to read. As recently as September of last year, he was playing out his days with Greenock Morton, a Scottish team on the outskirts of Glasgow. Then the police came knocking. That same month, Emmanuel-Thomas — best known as a product of Arsenal's academy — was arrested as part of a drugs bust and accused of smuggling cannabis with a street value of £600,000 ($814,000) into the UK. Yesterday, a court sentenced him to four years in prison. Aged 34, his name is tarred and his career is over, a sharp fall from grace complete. Advertisement It's many moons since mentions of Emmanuel-Thomas in dispatches were making ears prick at Arsenal and beyond. Ultimately, it didn't happen for him there and he soon became nomadic, passing through clubs in England, Scotland, Thailand and India. But he's still the guy Arsene Wenger once described as 'an unbelievable finisher' — so lethal and powerful that when he helped destroy Liverpool in the FA Youth Cup in 2009, Liverpool's players refused to believe he was young enough to be taking part in the competition. Why, then, did Emmanuel-Thomas embroil himself in the importation of narcotics, a crime his own barrister described as 'a catastrophic error of judgement', when, before this offence, he had been a law-abiding citizen his entire life? Danny Taylor was in court to find out. 'The most painful experience' By the time of his arrest, Emmanuel-Thomas was no longer earning big from football. His pay at Morton was £600 a week, before bonuses. The club terminated his six-month contract as soon as he was charged. Chelmsford Crown Court heard how he may have been tempted into criminality during his short time playing for Thai side PTT Rayong in 2019. The cannabis in question arrived on a plane from Bangkok. The court was also told that Emmanuel-Thomas enlisted two women — one of them his own partner at the time — to act as couriers, promising them £2,500 in cash and flying them business class via Dubai. The women were themselves charged by police, but the allegations against them were dropped after WhatsApp conversations showed they believed they were bringing gold back to the UK, rather than illegal drugs. Emmanuel-Thomas deleted his messages, threw away his mobile phone and, at first, denied all wrongdoing — before changing his tune and pleading guilty. The maximum sentence for cannabis importation in the UK is 14 years. He received four, although nine months of that sentence have already been served by him on remand. He called his conviction 'the most painful and eye-opening experience of my life'. Advertisement A father of two, he will re-emerge from prison before long, with no semblance of a career to cling to. As the judge told him, 'You will no longer be known for being a professional footballer. You will be known as a criminal, a professional footballer who threw it all away and put others at risk of imprisonment in pursuit of money.' The World Cup is rarely a foregone conclusion but, with the big kick-off in North America a little over 12 months away, is anybody looking beyond Spain? Miss Grand International's Rachel Gupta Steps Down, Alleges Harassment

The former Miss Grand International 2024, who won the title in October, announced she was stepping down from the role due to mistreatment and harassment from Miss Grand International Public Company Limited (MGI), the organization behind the Thai beauty pageant. "The whole time that I was working with Miss Grand International, the last seven months,' Gupta said in a May 28 YouTube video, 'I was constantly harassed, manipulated, ignored and left to fend for myself." In addition to her allegations that she was made to sign a 'one-sided' contract and was often left without 'basic amenities,' the 21-year-old alleged that "immediately after winning, they moved me into a cramped hotel room, where all my suitcases couldn't open properly because there wasn't enough space." Gupta then alleged she gained weight as a result of eating takeout food since "there were no pots and pans" in the lodging provided by MGI. And then, in turn, she said the organization ridiculed her because of her weight gain. More from E! "They sent a representative to me, and he just comes up to me and starts pinching me in places. He's like, 'Oh, you need to lose weight here. You need to lose weight here.' It's so embarrassing. It makes you feel so small and so bad." Ultimately, the beauty queen decided to relinquish her title after she said she was 'stuck' in Thailand with 'no security,' unable to return to her home in India, and felt unsupported by MGI during her time there, including after $1000 allegedly went missing. 'I realized, in that moment, that these people will never support me,' she said. 'Frankly they don't care if I live or die. As long as I'm there to smile at their events, as long as I keep my body super skinny, the way they like, they don't care if I live or die.' Shortly after Gupta published her video, MGI announced on Instagram that they had revoked her title. Later, they refuted her allegations. "Miss Grand International Public Company Limited (MGI) issues this formal statement in response to a series of false, misleading, and defamatory claims made publicly by Ms. Rachel Gupta, former Miss Grand International 2024," the organization said in a statement to People published June 5. "Her remarks, circulated via a video published on 28 May 2025, distort facts and misrepresent her contractual relationship with MGI—relying solely on emotional appeals and tearful storytelling without any physical evidence to support her claims." In addition to emphasizing that Gupta's claims, including allegations directed at MGI's chief operating officer, were 'rejected in their entirety' by the organization, they noted their belief in the beauty pageant. "MGI will not allow personal attacks or manipulative narratives,' the statement continued, 'to undermine the credibility of its executives or the integrity of the organization." E! Ex-Arsenal player jailed for drug smuggling plot
Former Arsenal player Jay Emmanuel-Thomas was jailed for four years on Thursday for his involvement in a £600,000 ($812,000) drug smuggling plot. The 34-year-old was arrested in September last year after officers seized roughly 60 kilograms of cannabis brought through London's Stansted Airport by two women he had recruited - his girlfriend and her friend - on a flight from Thai capital Bangkok via Dubai. An earlier hearing heard the women -- who were found not guilty -- believed they were importing gold. Emmanuel-Thomas, who pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to a smuggling charge, was sacked by Scottish Championship side Greenock Morton after his arrest. His lawyer conceded the father-of-two had made a "catastrophic error of judgment" after falling on financial hard times. A highly-promising graduate of Arsenal's academy, Emmanuel-Thomas made five appearances for the Gunners before leaving the north London club in 2011. The English player went on to feature for Ipswich, Bristol City, QPR and Aberdeen among a host other clubs, including Thai side PTT Rayong. Judge Alexander Mills, said in imposing a four-year sentence: "It's through your own action that you will no longer be known for playing professional football. "You will be known as a criminal.
