Palisades and Eaton firefighters had elevated blood levels of mercury and lead, according to an early study
The immediate risks faced by the firefighters who were on the front lines battling the Palisades and Eaton fires that tore through Los Angeles County may have abated, but long-term health concerns remain.
A team of researchers tested the blood of a group of 20 firefighters who were called to duty when the wildfires hit Los Angeles County communities, and found that they had levels of lead and mercury in their blood that was significantly higher than what health experts consider to be safe — and also higher than firefighters exposed to a forest fire.
The results are part of the longer-term LA Fire Health Study, which is investigating the health impacts of the January fires on those exposed to the toxins it released into the the environment. The team includes researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, UC Davis, the University of Texas at Austin, and the USC Keck School of Medicine.
"What you need to worry about is some of these metals that, when they get burned, they get up in the air," said Dr. Kari Nadeau, chair of the Department of Environmental Health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and one of the researchers working on the project. "They can get into your lungs, and they can get into your skin, and they get can absorbed and get into your blood."
The group of 20 firefighters — who had come from Northern California to assist in the efforts — were tested just days after the fires were contained. They had toiled for long hours as the two fires razed entire communities, burning homes, cars, businesses, and a still unknown list of chemicals and metals. Combined, the fires killed 29 people and destroyed more than 16,000 structures.
On average, said Nadeau, the firefighters had lead and mercury levels three and five times higher, respectively, than a control group of firefighters who fought a forest fire alone. According to the California Department of Public Health, the average blood lead level for adults in the United States is less than 1 microgram per deciliter.

Researchers are still looking to expand the number of firefighters in the study, as well as the range of toxins they may have been exposed to. Nevertheless, even these limited and preliminary findings bolster a growing worry among firefighters that the L.A. fires may have exposed them to metals and chemicals with long-term health effects.
"The results are pretty alarming," said Dave Gillotte, a captain with the Los Angeles County Fire Department and president of the Los Angeles County Firefighters Local 1014. "We don't just fear, but we're quite confident that we're going to see health impacts with our firefighters who fought these fires on the front lines."
Firefighters regularly risk exposure to chemicals and metals — including lead and mercury — when responding to house and commercial fires in an urban setting, Gillotte said. But response to a single house fire, for example, would likely last a few hours, not the days on end of the Palisades and Eaton fires. Firefighters also typically face prolonged exposure to the particulate matter in smoke when fighting wildfires in rural areas — but not the chemicals of an urban setting. The Eaton and Palisades fires presented a combined risk: a wildfire-like blaze with firefighters on the ground for extended periods in an urban setting, with electric vehicles, batteries, chemicals and metals burning in high heat, mixing and spreading with the same wind that was spreading the flames.
"It was a more intense exposure as a result of the wind driving those toxins, even with our protective gear," Gillotte said.

According to Gillotte, these types of urban wildfires could cause long-term health impacts for first responders similar to those from events like the destruction of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Already, officials from the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, the Sacramento Fire Department, and Los Angeles County have begun to test their firefighters for metal and chemical exposure, Gillotte said.
Meanwhile, as part of a separate study, Los Angeles city fire officials have also been looking at the health effects on its firefighters.
"We are very concerned and worried," said Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Kevin Frank. The LAFD has so far taken blood and urine samples of about 350 of its firefighters, as part of an ongoing nationwide study, funded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, to look at firefighters' biomarkers and exposure to cancer-causing substances. That study — which is different than the LA Fire Health Study and the one mentioned by Gillotte — includes more than 7,000 firefighters from across the country.
After the fires, Frank said, several firefighters who reported to Altadena and Pacific Palisades reported health issues, such as trouble breathing. Nadeau, who is working on the LA Fire Health Study, but not the FEMA-funded national study, noted that exposure to heavy metals can contribute to worse long-term health outcomes.
Firefighters already face higher levels of some illnesses, such as autoimmune diseases, asthma and some cancers, she said. Fire officials said the life expectancy of a firefighter is about 10 years lower than that of the average person.
The LA Fire Health study is still in its early stages. Nadeau says she and her colleagues plan to look for evidence of exposure to other heavy metals in addition to mercury and lead. "We're going to be studying toxins that haven't been studied" in firefighters before, she said.

Typically, the results of studies like these are not made public until they have been peer-reviewed and published by a scientific journal. Nadeau said the consortium decided to share some of the preliminary data early, hoping to help residents, civic leaders and first responders understand the impacts of the fires.
"You really want to know: 'What's in the air, what's in the water, what's in the ash that blew into my kitchen cabinet? Do I let my dog outside?'" she said. "All these questions were coming up and we thought, 'We really need to serve the community.'" Indeed, while the initial findings will be focused on firefighters' exposure, the team is also looking into residents' exposure to heavy metals and chemicals.
Nadeau is also looking ahead: The information, she says, could help fire officials as they face the possibility of another similar fire by helping them better understand the source of the chemicals, how safety equipment was used during the fires, and the efficacy of that gear.
"I'd like to say this is the last of its kind, but we know it won't be," she said. "It's not a matter of if, but a matter of when people undergo a fire like that again in L.A."

The study participant, who has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, was able to speak to his family, change his intonation and even 'sing' simple melodies. UC Davis Health said that the system's digital vocal tract has no detectable delays. 'Translating neural activity into text, which is how our previous speech brain-computer interface works, is akin to text messaging. It's a big improvement compared to standard assistive technologies, but it still leads to delayed conversation. By comparison, this new real-time voice synthesis is more like a voice call,' said Sergey Stavisky, senior author of the paper and an assistant professor in the UC Davis Department of Neurological Surgery. Stavisky went on to say that with the use of instantaneous voice synthesis, neuroprosthesis users will be able to be more interactive and included in conversations. The clinical trial at UC Davis, BrainGate2, used an investigational brain-computer interface that consists of surgically implanting four microelectrode arrays into the area of the brain that produces speech. The firing pattern of hundreds of neurons was measured through electrodes, followed by the alignment of the patterns with the attempted speech sound the participant was producing. The activity of neurons in the brain is recorded and then sent to a computer that interprets the signals to reconstruct voice, researchers said. 'The main barrier to synthesizing voice in real-time was not knowing exactly when and how the person with speech loss is trying to speak,' said Maitreyee Wairagkar, first author of the study and project scientist in the Neuroprosthetics Lab at UC Davis. 'Our algorithms map neural activity to intended sounds at each moment of time. This makes it possible to synthesize nuances in speech and give the participant control over the cadence of his BCI-voice.' The neural signals of the participant were translated into audible speech in one-fortieth of a second, according to the study. 'This short delay is similar to the delay a person experiences when they speak and hear the sound of their own voice,' said officials. The participant was also able to say words unknown to the system, along with making interjections. He was able to modulate the intonation of his generated computer voice to ask a question or emphasize specific words in a sentence. 60% of the BCI-synthesized words were understandable to listeners, while only 4% were understandable when not using BCI, the study said. Invasive bullfrogs ‘eat everything' — including turtles — at Yosemite, study says
A study has found that removing invasive bullfrogs from Yosemite National Park ponds has generated a resurgence in the population of native pond turtles, experts said. When University of California, Davis, researchers first began studying four ponds at the park, they were overwhelmed by non-native American bullfrogs, a news release said. 'At night, you could look out over the pond and see a constellation of eyes blinking back at you,' said Sidney Woodruff, a UC Davis Ph.D. candidate and lead author of the study. 'Their honking noise is iconic, and it drowns out native species' calls.' The invasive frogs had decimated the native population of northwestern pond turtles, according to the study, published in the May issue of the journal Biological Conservation. Together with the southwestern pond turtle, northwestern pond turtles are the only native freshwater turtles in California, the university said. Northwestern pond turtles have vanished from over half their range, which stretches from Baja California to Washington state. At Yosemite, the only surviving turtles in the ponds surveyed were the ones that were too big for bullfrogs to eat, the study found. American bullfrogs are native to the eastern United States but don't belong in the West. 'One reason American bullfrogs are among the top worst globally introduced pests is because they eat everything — anything that fits into their mouth,' said senior author Brian Todd, a UC Davis professor in the Department of Wildlife, Fish and Conservation Biology. 'They've been causing declines to native species everywhere they're introduced, which is around the world.' The bullfrogs were introduced to Yosemite National Park in the 1950s and quickly spread throughout the park, researchers said. While their arrival was believed to be linked to the decline in pond turtles, it wasn't confirmed until the study took place, according to researchers. Between 2016 and 2022, researchers monitored four ponds at Yosemite, two with bullfrogs and two without, the study said. Turtles were 2 to 100 times more prevalent at the ponds where bullfrogs were absent, researchers said. When bullfrogs were removed from the other two ponds in 2019, researchers found juvenile pond turtles in them for the first time, the study said. 'As bullfrog presence declined, we started to hear other native frogs call and see native salamanders walking around,' Woodruff said. 'It's nice to be able to go back to these sites and hear a chorus of native frogs calling again that previously would not have been heard.' The Western Pond Turtle Range-wide Conservation Coalition, Yosemite Conservancy, U.S. Geological Survey and USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture funded the study.

Trump cuts threaten ‘irreplaceable' Harvard stockpile of human feces, urine
Kept frozen by liquid nitrogen inside laboratories at Harvard University are more than 1.5 million biospecimens that have mere 'weeks' left until they spoil. As Harvard fights the Trump administration in court over the suspension of nearly $3 billion in federal funding, soon there won't be enough money left to keep the freezers running. The nearly 50 years of collected human feces, urine, blood, tumors and even toenail clippings could have consequential implications for the future health of Americans, and yet, they're at risk of being lost if funding slashed by the Trump administration isn't restored. The mother lode collection housed at Harvard has supported generations-long chronic disease risk studies that have fundamentally shaped major scientific and medical advancements. The research also uncovered the dangers of trans fats, which the U.S. has now largely restricted. The biological samples collected during the studies are 'irreplaceable,' according to Walter Willett, a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and one of the most sought-after nutritionists internationally. And some of the study participants could even die before the next check-in period, he said. 'No other institution in the world has this data,' Willett wrote in a May 30 court affidavit detailing the impacts of federal funding cuts on his research. Willett filed his affidavit last month as part of a lawsuit in which Harvard faculty members are suing the Trump administration. President Donald Trump has gone after the world's wealthiest higher education institution and its funding in the name of antisemitism, claiming Harvard has failed to protect Jewish students, particularly in the wake of the war in Gaza. Willett's research is funded by two federal grants from the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health. On May 6, he was informed the funding had been terminated for both the Nurses' Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. The Nurses' Health Study, which began with its first installment in 1976, followed by Willett's involvement in 1989, started tracking a cohort of 116,000 women in order to understand how 'diets and lifestyle relate to the risk of developing cancer,' Willett's affidavit said. In addition to collected biological samples, much of the data comes from questionnaires filled out by study participants every two years. The Nurses' Health Study has associated circulating sex hormones and postmenopausal breast cancer risk; connected higher vitamin D levels linked with lower risks of both colon polyps and colon cancer; and played a role in discovering genetic variations involved in cancers and cancer-related factors. The Health Professionals Follow-up Study is parallel research that has been tracking the diets of 52,000 adult men who have been diagnosed with cancer from all states in America. 'This study collects data about heart attacks, cancer and other conditions that share risk factors with heart disease, such as dementia and Parkinson's disease,' Willett wrote. 'Dozens of other grants studying many diseases have used the dataset collected by this study.' Read more: 'We are not just fighting for Harvard': For alums, this year feels different The male-focused study, which has also been used for women's research, has unearthed the harmful effects of trans fat; made connections between healthy plant foods and lower cardiovascular risk; linked dietary patterns and prostate cancer risk; and associated olive oil benefits with a lower risk of dying from dementia. There is another element of urgency in addition to the uncertain future of the biological samples: Willett says some participants may die before researchers are able to follow up with them next year for new information on their physical and cognitive functions. 'The termination of my grants thus jeopardizes our chance to collect data from the living study participants who have voluntarily contributed personal information over the last four decades,' Willett wrote. 'This would deprive all Americans from the benefits of knowledge about diet, other aspects of lifestyle, and use of medications that enhance their possibilities of living longer and healthier lives.' Since April, the Trump administration has launched a series of attacks against Harvard. Nearly $3 billion in federal funding has either been cut or frozen, and there was also a wave of federal research grant terminations. The Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health announced in April that it was facing a 'significant budget crisis' resulting in layoffs and the non-renewal of two building leases. Since then, every one of the school's direct federal grants have been terminated and the school has even taken to social media to ask for donations. Federal funding makes up 46% of Harvard Chan School's budget.
