Wrexham promotion: Humphrey Ker's verdict on Phil Parkinson

When Dean Keates left his position at the end of the 2020-21 campaign, the club was looking to appoint the first new manager of the Ryan Reynolds/Rob McElhenney regime. Parkinson was available and he was sounded out about the possibility of taking the Racecourse hotseat - and the rest is history! The Reds finished runners-up in League One this season, securing an historic third successive promotion under Parkinson. The 57-year-old, who now has six promotions on his CV as manager, has taken Wrexham from non-league football to the Championship, and community director Ker is so glad the club got their man back in the summer of 2021. "When we knew that Phil was available and with his pedigree, everyone was very excited and very interested to see whether he would really come here and do X, Y and Z," said Ker, who played a key role in Hollywood stars Reynolds and McElhenney becoming co-owners at the north Wales club. "Thank God he did. We looked around and talked to various people, some very good managers, but the feedback we got from particularly Les Reed and Shaun Harvey, who knew Phil and knew him as a person, they just spoke so highly of him as a person. "One of the things I'm most proud of is talking to Jack Marriott, Ryan Longman and various players, just how much fun they have playing for Wrexham. "They look forward to coming into work and how that has not always been the case in their careers that they have played at lots of clubs where they have not looked forward to going into work. "That is something we're very proud of, that they enjoy it here playing for Phil." Wrexham were among the League One leaders all season and eventually secured automatic promotion to the second tier with a game to go. The competition for a top-two finish was fierce but Ker had faith in Parkinson. "Phil was always confident. He is a serial winner," said Ker, a comedy writer and actor, who first gave McElhenney the idea of investing in a football club. "He takes the rough with the smooth, doesn't get too high after a win, doesn't get too deflated after a defeat. "He just keeps coming back and doing what we need to do to be promoted, and he has done it again." Wrexham's fate was back in their hands after beating Blackpool 2-1 on Easter Monday, with closest rivals Wycombe Wanderers losing 4-0 at home to Charlton Athletic. MORE WREXHAM AFC NEWS: With the Chairboys losing their next match at Leyton Orient, Wrexham knew they would be seal second spot behind champions Birmingham City with victory over Charlton in the later kick-off and the Reds triumphed 3-0 to go straight up. Ker says what the players and staff deserve all the credit they get for what has been achieved. "It takes no small amount of character to do what they've done over the last three years and there are so many members of that dressing room and background staff who've been around for the whole thing," he added. "After the game against Blackpool, I tweeted for everyone to get behind them and know that if you do, they will deliver for you as they have done time and time again before. "That's the reality of it. All the staff and all the players are an extraordinary group of people. "I don't think we at the top of the tree can claim that much credit other than we picked the right people to do what needed to be done, and they've absolutely delivered."

The Turkish actress and TV star, 30, sparked suggestions they'd broken up after she was seen arriving at the TV Baftas in London solo - despite the fact the professional dancer, 29, was in the city at the time. Ekin-Su looked stunning in a black bodycon dress, tying her brunette locks up in a high ponytail, as she proved the Love Island alum's biggest cheerleader. She was seen greeting him with a hug before crouching down alongside him as he got stuck into his pre-clash chat. Later on, following his first fight in the four-way card, Curtis was topless and donning his personalised boing shorts as the pair shared a snog. He raised his fist to the camera and said: "F**king lets go baby!" Ekin then chimed in: "Wooo next round!" In the second round of the four-way clash, Curtis was then defeated by boxer Tempo Arts. Yet fans were quick to appreciate his sporting performance, and one posted on Instagram: "Curtis did well for his first fight on 7 weeks training." A second put: "Entertaining fight from all. Curtis put up a decent fight against this champ." Despite the ITV2 matchmaking show couple's affectionate display, the pair have continually prompted split rumours, with claims first starting to swirl after they spent Easter apart. Ekin Su enjoys wine on her own during trip to Istanbul Ekin-Su is also set to spend more time overseas after The Sun exclusively revealed she had bagged a new job Stateside as her profile continues to rise in the USA. EX FEUD Curtis' boxing clash came as the couple are in the midst of a feud with MAFS star Georges Berthonneau. He previously claimed Ekin-Su "cheated" on him and said they were dating before she returned to Love Island. Georges, 32, claimed he was in a secret 10-month relationship with Ekin when she entered the All Stars villa this year. In a bombshell interview, he alleged that their relationship was "super intense and super intimate" and that they were "in love". The pair were first spotted together in November last year, but they never went public with their romance - despite Georges claiming they were dating for seven months. But Ekin-Su has flatly denied they were ever together. And a representative of Ekin-Su said: "Ekin-Su was never in an exclusive relationship with Georges. "He knew before she went on Love Island: All Stars that she was entering the show as a single person and therefore their relationship would not continue under those circumstances. "Ekin was upfront with Georges about her intention to pursue a new relationship on Love Island." The professional dancer insisted that he's ignored Georges' claims that he was in a serious relationship with Ekin-Su at the same time she was getting to know Curtis in the All Stars villa in January. In an exclusive interview with The Sun, Curtis said it was nothing but "outside noise". "Hey, if he wants to get in the ring with me, tell him to call me out and let's get in the ring," said Curtis. 6 The pair's relationship has not been without its difficulties Credit: Instagram 6 Ekin-Su sparked speculation of a split as she arrived at the TV Baftas solo Credit: Getty

The Glen, Haverfordwest, celebrates remarkable achievement

The Glen in Haverfordwest has raised £1,234 for the Wales Air Ambulance Service. The venue has now raised a total of £5,000 for the charity, which relies on public donations to raise the £11.2 million required every year to keep its helicopters in the air and rapid response vehicles on the road. The Glen held a fundraising evening with Welsh international prop Rob Evans and British and Irish Lions hooker Ken Owens. Around 55 people attended the event, which included a charity auction for a grand slam rugby jersey. Landlord Tom Slater, who plays for Narberth RFC, said: "It was a really good evening and everyone enjoyed. "The players talked about their careers, and we held an auction. "I'd like to thank everyone for supporting our Wales Air Ambulance fundraising events. "I just do my best to help out and raise funds for the charity. "I live on a farm and we're very rural and you never know if you, or someone you know, will need the Wales Air Ambulance's help. "It's an essential service and I know people whose lives have been saved by the Wales Air Ambulance." The Glen also held an Easter hamper raffle which raised £200 for the charity. Mike May, west Wales regional fundraising manager for Wales Air Ambulance, said: "We are always touched when people or businesses continue to raise funds for our charity. "The Glen has supported the Wales Air Ambulance for many years, this year they raised an incredible £1,234 which will help us to meet our yearly fundraising target of £11.2 million. "In total they've raised £5,000 which is amazing. "We really appreciate the effort those at The Glen put into making their fundraising a huge success. "I was delighted to meet Tom and hear about their support of our charity. "Thank you so much everyone. "Fundraisers, like these ones, will help us continue to be there for the people of Wales 24/7." The Wales Air Ambulance is consultant-led, taking hospital-standard treatments to the patient and if required, transferring them directly to the most appropriate hospital for their illness or injury. It is delivered via a unique third sector and public sector partnership. The Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service (EMRTS) supplies highly skilled NHS consultants and critical care practitioners who work on board the charity's vehicles. This advanced critical care includes the ability to administer anaesthesia, deliver blood transfusions and conduct minor operations, all at the scene of an incident.
