Jackie Chan, Ralph Macchio join martial arts forces in new Karate Kid movie

Jackie Chan reprises the role of Mr Han, a character he first played in the 2010 film 'The Karate Kid' opposite Jaden Smith. Photo: AP Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio blend fighting techniques to train a new karate kid in the latest instalment of the martial arts movie franchise. Karate Kid: Legends stars Ben Wang as Beijing kung fu whizz Li Fong who moves with his mother to New York, where he befriends pizza restaurant owner and retired boxer Victor and his daughter Mia. When that friendship irks a local karate champion, Li enters a karate tournament and begins training with his old kung fu teacher Mr Han, played by Chan, and Macchio's Daniel LaRusso, the protagonist of the original 1984 film The Karate Kid who learned karate from mentor Mr Miyagi. "They presented the concept to me... connecting the Miyagi to the Han family and how that made sense... I was like 'That's kind of clever. Okay, so how do we maintain this connective tissue into Li Fong's story that is organic and truthful'," Macchio said in a joint interview with Chan and Wang. "That was the challenge at first and figuring that out. Working with Jackie was like, 'Woohoo sign me up - when, where?' And then who's the kid? If we don't love this kid, then you have no movie. "So all those, like it happens with The Karate Kid universe, is magic dust that comes down and somehow it continues to resonate. So I'm excited for the next generation version," Macchio added. The movie is Macchio's fourth Karate Kid film playing LaRusso, a character he also portrayed in the Cobra Kai television series. Chan reprises the role of Mr Han, a character he first played in the 2010 film The Karate Kid opposite Jaden Smith. "Now we've both become a Miyagi," Chan said, referring to both his and Macchio's characters becoming mentors. "I remember when I saw the first one. Why him (Macchio)? Why not me?...I want to be The Karate Kid . (Now) We work together.' Wang, 25, said Chan's 2010 film introduced him to the franchise. "Stepping into it, it's a terrifying thing in a certain way because it's a beloved franchise and... the fans love it so much so I want to do right by them," he said. "But it's also a great honour because a lot of people auditioned for this part so I know how special and lucky it is that I get to do this with the two of them." – Reuters

#SHOWBIZ: 'Karate Kid' kicks hard but lacks knockout punch

MUCH like the changing seasons, the cinematic landscape often sees familiar blossoms return. This year, the "Karate Kid" franchise returns with the arrival of "Karate Kid: Legends". Billed as a bridge between the original films and the 2010 reboot, "Karate Kid: Legends" features Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, the original "Karate Kid" actor. The film has received a curious reception: lukewarm critical reviews contrasted with fervent fan enthusiasm. "Legends" is about an underdog finding his way through martial arts. Li Fong (Ben Wang), a teenager from Beijing, is uprooted and moved to New York City. His mother, wary of martial arts after a family tragedy, implores him to abandon his kung fu roots. Naturally, New York – with its challenges and often less-than-charming locals – soon presents Li with the classic Karate Kid dilemma: bullying, a budding romance with Mia (Sadie Stanley), and a confrontation that can be resolved only with a well-aimed kick. Where the film truly shines, and captures the hearts of its audience, is in its casting and performances. Wang is an absolute revelation as Li Fong. He carries the film with earnest sincerity, showcasing impressive physical prowess in the fight sequences, commendable comedic timing and a nuanced emotional range. He's a likable protagonist and a worthy heir to the "Karate Kid" legacy. The real draw for many, however, is the on-screen reunion of Chan as Mr Han and Macchio as Daniel LaRusso. Their chemistry is delightful. The contrast between their martial arts philosophies – kung fu versus karate – offers both amusing banter and a natural narrative bridge. While some may lament their limited screen time, their presence is a nostalgic highlight sure to please longtime fans. Furthermore, Joshua Jackson, as Mia's father Victor Lipani, delivers a surprisingly robust and charming performance. He adds both gravitas and humour to the supporting role. Stanley, as Mia, delivers a performance that gives her character depth and appeal, elevating her beyond the typical romantic subplot. The action, too, is largely a triumph. The fights are choreographed with flair, blending acrobatic spectacle with grounded, believable technique. The fact that Wang, Chan and Macchio are all performing their own stunts adds a layer of authenticity and dynamism. There's a tangible energy to these sequences that often surpasses the original trilogy's more sedate confrontations. The film's occasional nods to video game aesthetics, with subtle sound effects and on-screen graphics, offer a contemporary twist without feeling out of place. Yet, despite these considerable strengths, "Karate Kid: Legends" is not without its flaws. The most noticeable flaw centres on the film's overly familiar storyline. It's formulaic – so closely following the original "Karate Kid" blueprint that it occasionally feels like a carbon copy. The narrative beats – new kid, new city, bullying, training, tournament – are all present and accounted for, leading to a sense of predictability. This rigid adherence to formula limits the film's emotional depth, especially when compared to the original's more nuanced exploration of adolescent anxiety. The villains, especially Connor Day (Aramis Knight), are one-dimensional, serving as antagonists with little motivation or development. The pacing is another sticking point. At just 94 minutes, the film often feels rushed, particularly in its latter half, once Mr Han and Daniel make their entrance. Subplots feel crammed in, leaving little room for characters or the main story to breathe and develop organically. While the brisk pacing keeps things moving, it robs several key scenes of their emotional weight. When weighed against the phenomenal success of the Netflix series, "Cobra Kai", "Legends" faces an uphill battle. "Cobra Kai" has been lauded for its ingenious expansion of the original narrative, its compelling character development, and its ability to deliver intricate, emotionally resonant storylines. "Legends", by contrast, feels more like a retread. Crucially, it suffers from legal separation from the "Cobra Kai" characters, aside from Daniel, who predates the series. This means it cannot tap into the rich narrative tapestry and popular new characters that the show has so expertly woven. While "Legends" offers enjoyable fight sequences, many would argue that "Cobra Kai" elevates the action to new, inventive heights. Ultimately, "Karate Kid: Legends" is a film that will delight fans of the franchise. It's a heartwarming, often exciting, and crowd-pleasing addition, passing the torch to a new generation while honouring its roots. It's a worthy entry in the franchise for its entertainment value and nostalgic pull, but perhaps not one that elevates the saga to new heights. Across the Pacific: Palauan Voyagers Renew Austronesian Bonds in Taitung

TAITUNG, June 6, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — The Taitung County Government invited the Palauan-led multinational crew of the traditional sailing canoe Alingano Maisu, which brought together sailors from across the greater Micronesia region and Taiwan. The crew has recently completed a remarkable cultural voyage from Palau to Taitung, Taiwan, as part of a broader Austronesian exchange. With their return voyage now underway, the journey served not only as a reaffirmation of shared heritage but also as a fresh chapter in the living story of oceanic kinship. The crew was welcomed with a traditional ceremony led by the Dulan Youth Group, featuring ceremonial chants and protective dance performances—an expression of ancestral ties and mutual respect among Austronesian peoples. At the Taitung County Government Hall, a Voyaging Culture Sharing Forum was held, where the navigators shared their experiences crossing the Pacific and their traditional knowledge of celestial navigation. In return, local boatbuilders engaged in dialogue, sharing insights into their own seafaring culture and strengthening a shared reverence for the ocean. During their stay, the guest voyagers visited several Indigenous communities along Taiwan's eastern coast. In the Amis community of Duli, they took part in hands-on workshops exploring traditional cigarette rolling, fishing techniques, and even rice wine brewing—experiences that offered a deeper appreciation of Indigenous craftsmanship and knowledge passed down through generations. The journey also included a scenic ride on the antique 'Breezy Blue' express train, which hugs the coastline between Taitung and Jinlun. This allowed the visitors to soak in the spectacular sea-and-sky vistas, through open windows, and gain further insight into the region's history and lifestyle. Cultural exchange extended to the table as well. Besides enjoying meticulously prepared Indigenous meals, the crew also experienced Taiwan's signature hotpot culture. Sitting around the steaming pot, guests and hosts shared stories, laughter, and flavors—reminding all that food is one of the most powerful ways to build bridges between islands. Local Amis hosts presented the voyagers with betel nuts, hand-carved wooden badges, and even ukuleles—symbols of friendship and cultural pride. The crew also participated in the opening of the Kavulungan Cultural Park, a major cultural event celebrating the traditions of the Paiwan people. The visit concluded with a joyful farewell banquet filled with music, dance, and heartfelt connection—bringing the entire journey full circle. Through this voyage centered on voyaging culture, traditional maritime skills were not only honored but reawakened. As the Palauan canoe sets sail homeward, the enduring spirit of Austronesian solidarity continues to ripple across the Pacific, reminding us all of the powerful stories carried by wind, waves, and kinship.
