
Travel companies feel the impact of slump in demand for US holidays
Expedia Group said Friday that reduced travel demand in the United States led to its weaker-than-expected revenue in the first quarter, and Bank of America said credit card transactions showed spending on flights and lodging kept falling last month.
The two reports add to growing indications that the US travel and tourism industry may see its first slowdown since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic fuelled a period of 'revenge travel' that turned into sustained interest in getting away.
Expedia, which owns accommodation reservation platforms Hotels.com and VRBO as well as an eponymous online travel agency, was the latest American company to report slowing business with both international visitors and domestic travellers.
Airbnb and Hilton noted the same trends last week in their quarterly earnings reports. Most major US airlines have said they plan to reduce scheduled flights, citing a decline in economy passengers booking leisure trips.
The US Travel Association has said that economic uncertainty and anxiety over President Donald Trump's tariffs may explain the pullback. In April, Americans' confidence in the economy slumped for a fifth straight month to the lowest level since the onset of the pandemic.
Bank of America said Friday that its credit card holders were willing to spend on 'nice to have' services like eating at restaurants in March and April, but 'bigger ticket discretionary outlays on airfare and lodging continued to decline, possibly due to declining consumer confidence and worries about the economic outlook.'
Abroad, anger about the tariffs as well as concern about tourist detentions at the border have made citizens of some other countries less interested in travelling to the US, tourism industry experts say.
The US government said last month that 7.1 million visitors entered the US from overseas this year as of the end of March, 3.3 per cent fewer than during the first three months of 2024.
The numbers did not include land crossings from Mexico or travel from Canada, where citizens have expressed indignation over Trump's remarks about making their country the 51st state.
Both US and Canadian government data have shown steep declines in border crossings from Canada.
Expedia Chief Financial Officer Scott Schenkel said that while the net value of the travel company's bookings into the US fell 7 per cent in the January-March period, bookings to the US from Canada were down nearly 30 per cent.
In a conference call with investors on Friday, Expedia CEO Ariane Gorin said demand for US travel was lower in April than in March.
'We're still continuing to see pressure on travel into the US, but we've also seen some rebalancing,' Gorin said. 'Europeans are travelling less to the US, but more to Latin America.'
Airbnb said last week that foreign travel to the US makes up only 2 to 3 per cent of its business. But within that category, it's seeing declining interest in the US as a destination.
'I think Canada is the most obvious example, where we see Canadians are travelling at a much lower rate to the US but they're travelling more domestically, they are traveling to Mexico, they are going to Brazil, they're going to France, they're going to Japan,' Airbnb Chief Financial Officer Ellie Mertz said in a conference call with investors.
Hilton President and CEO Christopher Nassetta said the company saw international travel to its US hotels fall throughout the first quarter, particularly from Canada and Mexico.
But Nassetta said he remained optimistic for the second half of this year.
'My own belief is you will see some of — if not a lot of — that uncertainty wane over the next couple of quarters, and that will allow the underlying strength of the economy to shine through again,' he said.

Trade war accelerates major slowdown in global economy since start of 2020s
The trade war launched by Donald Trump has been causing a significant slowdown in global economic growth, according to forecasts released by the World Bank on Tuesday, June 10. The international institution projected that the global economy will grow by 2.3% this year, compared to 2.8% in both 2023 and 2024. This figure is 0.4 percentage points lower than what was forecast back in January. "Only six months ago, a 'soft landing' appeared to be in sight: the global economy was stabilizing after an extraordinary string of calamities both natural and man-made over the past few years," namely the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, said Indermit Gill, the World Bank's chief economist. "That moment has passed. The world economy today is once more running into turbulence. Without a swift course correction, the harm to living standards could be deep." These forecasts are based on the assumption that tariffs will remain at their late-May levels – after Donald Trump's partial backtracking on China and following his agreement with the United Kingdom. Based on these assumptions, the United States will be the first economy affected. Higher tariffs should push up the price of imports and cut into American consumers' spending. According to the World Bank, growth in the world's largest economy is expected to reach 1.4% in 2025, half of the 2.8% recorded in 2024. The eurozone should be less affected, but starting from a much lower base: growth there should be 0.7%, after 0.9% in 2024.

Hopes rise as US and China hold second day of trade talks
The gathering of key officials from the world's two biggest economies began Monday in London, after an earlier round of talks in Geneva last month. Stock markets wavered as investors hoped the talks will bring some much-needed calm on trading floors and ease tensions between the economic superpowers. A US Treasury spokesman told AFP on Tuesday the "talks resumed earlier this" morning. One of US President Donald Trump's top advisers said he expected "a big, strong handshake" at the end of the talks in the historic Lancaster House, operated by the UK foreign ministry. Trump told reporters at the White House on Monday: "We are doing well with China. China's not easy. "I'm only getting good reports." The agenda is expected to be dominated by exports of rare earth minerals used in a wide range of things including smartphones, electric vehicle batteries and green technology. "In Geneva, we had agreed to lower tariffs on them, and they had agreed to release the magnets and rare earths that we need throughout the economy," Trump's top economic adviser, Kevin Hassett, told CNBC on Monday. But even though Beijing was releasing some supplies, "it was going a lot slower than some companies believed was optimal", he added. Still, he said he expected "a big, strong handshake" at the end of the talks. "Our expectation is that after the handshake, any export controls from the US will be eased, and the rare earths will be released in volume," Hassett added. He also said the Trump administration might be willing to ease some recent curbs on tech exports. Concessions? Tensions between Washington and Beijing have heightened since Trump took office in January, with both countries engaging in a tariffs war hiking duties on each other's exports to three figures -- an effective trade embargo. "Rumours are circulating that the US may be willing to make concessions on tech exports in exchange for China easing restrictions on rare earth metal exports," she said. Rare earth shipments from China to the US have slowed since the tariff war was triggered by Trump's so-called "Liberation Day" announcements, according to Brooks. The US leader slapped sweeping levies of 10 percent on friend and foe alike, and threatened steeper rates on dozens of economies. The tariffs have already had a sharp effect, with official figures from Beijing showing Chinese exports to the United States in May plunged by 12.7 percent. China is also in talks with other trading partners -- including Japan and South Korea -- to try to build a united front to counter Trump's tariffs. Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Tuesday urged South Korea's new President Lee Jae-myung to work with Beijing to uphold free trade to ensure "the stability and smooth functioning of global and regional industrial and supply chains." "A healthy, stable, and continuously deepening China–South Korea relationship aligns with the trend of the times," Xi said in a phone call, according to the Xinhua news agency.
