Suchinda Kraprayoon, Thai Leader Who Set Off Bloody Protests, Dies at 91

New York Times6 hours ago

Suchinda Kraprayoon, a prime minister of Thailand who seized power in a military coup, then violently cracked down on pro-democracy protests in 1992, events that came to be known as Black May, died on June 10 in Bangkok. He was 91.
His death, in a hospital, was reported by the Thai News Agency.
Mr. Suchinda's brief tenure as prime minister, from which he resigned in humiliation after just 48 days, was a pivot point in modern Thai history. His leadership was considered such a disaster that it quelled the military's appetite to overtly interfere in government for more than a decade, an unusual interlude in a nation long dominated by the armed forces.
A charismatic Army general who became a short-fused politician, Mr. Suchinda was the nation's supreme military commander in February 1991, when he helped engineer a bloodless coup against a civilian government, some of whose ministers were notorious for corruption.
It was the 17th military coup or attempted coup in Thailand in six decades.
After the coup, Mr. Suchinda publicly promised that he would not take the job of prime minister, yet he did just that in April 1992, after being nominated by a pro-military coalition in the legislature. Opponents called his appointment 'Suchinda's second coup.'
Tens of thousands of protesters flooded the streets of Bangkok beginning on May 17. Troops loyal to the government sprayed the unarmed crowd with automatic rifle fire. The lobby of the Royal Hotel in the city's historic center became a makeshift surgical ward, where at least 10 people were reported to have died on one given night.

Malaysia Court Discharges Najib From One of His 1MDB Cases

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak succeeded in setting aside another one of his court cases involving troubled state fund 1MDB, in a rare victory for the jailed politician. The Kuala Lumpur High Court granted Najib a discharge, a reprieve that doesn't amount to an acquittal, on three counts of money laundering breaches related to SRC International Sdn Bhd., a former unit of 1Malaysia Development Bhd. A discharge is a ruling that leaves room for the prosecution to lay the same charges in the future.

NYC's Muslim mayoral candidate gets car bomb threat, despite not owning a vehicle

New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani's office said Thursday that the New York City Police Department (NYPD) hate crime unit is investigating a car bomb threat made against him, despite not owning a car. "After multiple death threats and racist messages, Assembly Mamdani's office is participating in an ongoing investigation by the NYPD's Hate Crimes Task Force," a statement from the mayoral candidate's office read. "While Zohran does not own a car, the violent and specific language of what appears to be a repeat caller is alarming and we are taking every precaution. "While this is a sad reality, it is not surprising after millions of dollars have been spent on dehumanizing, Islamophobic rhetoric designed to stoke division and hate," the statement continued. "Violence and racism should have no place in our politics. Zohran remains focused on delivering a safe and affordable New York." Mamdani, who is vying to be New York City's first Muslim mayor, has been criticized by his competitors, including former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, for his views on Middle East politics, which reached a boiling point this week amid ongoing strikes between Israel and Iran. During a recent mayoral debate, Mamdani said, "Israel has a right to exist." But Mamdani refused to agree that Israel has the right to exist as a "Jewish state" but rather "as a state with equal rights." Fox News Digital has reached out to the NYPD regarding the car bomb threat investigation. Despite differing political views, Cuomo condemned the threats made against his political opponent. "This is an atrocious threat of political violence against Mr. Mamdani. It is unacceptable —I strongly condemn these threats and any others like them," Cuomo said on X. "This has no place in our politics or our society. Thankfully, no one was harmed. This is a pivotal time in this country, and we need to tone down the rhetoric and focus on the people's agenda." Another Democratic mayoral candidate, New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, also condemned the threats against Mamdani."The hideous threats of Islamophobic violence against [Zohran Mamdani] are dangerous and morally reprehensible," Lander said. "I condemn this behavior to the fullest extent. Hate has no place in New York City." Lander was arrested earlier this week by the Department of Homeland Security after allegedly assaulting a federal officer.

Carville says Dems 'betrayed' working-class voters by not including them in 'too-cool-for-school' coalition

Veteran Democratic Party strategist James Carville warned on Thursday that Democrats need to acknowledge how they took part in the decades-long betrayal of White, working-class voters. Since the Democratic Party's historic loss in November, many have been trying to chart a path forward to reclaiming their coalition. While some have doubled-down on controversial far-left identity politics, some have worked to reclaim working-class men they alienated in recent years, particularly White men. On the Politics War Room podcast, hosts Carville and Al Hunt addressed a comment from a listener, who suggested that rather than being reconciliation, MAGA supporters deserve to be "beaten badly at the voting booth and then told just to suck it up." "Oh God, who doesn't have that instinct?" Carville responded, but nonetheless warned that politics comes down to winning elections, and that means persuading voters. "It is not the most satisfying way, but what in the end are we trying to do? We're trying to do one thing, win elections." He proceeded to warn against the "temptation that says 'I can't believe how godd--n stupid you were." While he said he has no temptation for the "corporate a—wipes" who voted for Trump to become richer, the strategist nicknamed the Ragin' Cajun expressed some sympathy for working-class Whites he says have been betrayed by both parties. "I have an iota of sympathy for somebody whose life hadn't turned out right," he said. "The brilliant thing about MAGA is it gives you an explanation other than yourself of why your life didn't turn out the way you wanted it, and we should say to these people 'We kind of understand what you were trying to say but you were betrayed.'" "Let's also face it, Democrats acted like these people didn't exist alright? They just did, and don't come back and say-We acted like working-class, particularly working-class non-college Whites were not part of our too-cool-for-school group," he continued. "There were some real high-end people that kind of bought in to that s---." He returned to the listener's question and reasserted his point that it's better to reconcile with working-class White voters, even if he understands being frustrated with them. "I can see it, but the best thing to do is not punch him in the mouth but to say, 'You know man I could hear where you're coming from you just got betrayed, and we betrayed you somewhat, and we now have learned our lesson,'" he said.
