
New life being brought to large Dayton apartment complex
A large public housing complex is in the middle of a big transformation.

The DeSoto Bass apartments have stood between Germantown and Stewart streets for 80 years and now big changes are visible.

As shown on News Center 7 at 5:00, some of the large apartment buildings have already been torn down. Another two or three are in the middle of demolition or closed up to be ready.
It's all part of the Greater Dayton Premier Management's (GDPM) plan to modernize and improve public housing while keeping it affordable.
The public housing agency has worked on this project for 10 years and expects it to take 10 years to complete.
'The influx of already with just those two projects, $30 million in new, affordable housing,' Jennifer Heapy, GDPM CEO, said.
Heapy told News Center 7 that the Germantown Crossing is a $16 million development.
Then they will build a new 44-unit building at the corner of Germantown Street and Danner Avenue.
They will have 94 new units compared to the 84 units they've torn down so far.
GDPM is seeking more funding to replace buildings put up in the 1940's.
'We will only be taking additional units offline as we build new units,' Heapy said. 'And again, as we work our way through the development, the families that are living there will have the first opportunity to move into the new units.'

Longtime dorm fixture demolished at Cedarville University, making room for growth
It's been a bittersweet moment for students and alumni at Cedarville University as demolition crews tore down Williams Hall. It holds many memories for people who once lived in the dorm hall. Director of Gift Planning for Cedarville University, Roscoe Smith, said, 'When I arrived on campus in the fall of 1978 as a 17-year-old freshman, I was housed in Williams Hall, which at the time was a men's dorm.' He said it was fun reliving the memories as he watched it come down. 'Playing way too much foosball. We had a lounge up on the second floor with a foosball table, and we had tournament after tournament,' Smith said. He continued by saying, 'It's the people that made the difference, not the building.' Williams Hall was transitioned in 1981 to house campus offices, beginning with student services. In recent years, it has been home to several academic departments. This is one of the final steps to rebuilding the campus. The Bolthouse Academic Center will be built at that location, costing $35 million. 'That will house offices, classrooms, student collaboration space, conference rooms for many of our liberal arts programs,' Smith said. He continued by saying it's pivotal for the school's growth. 'It's thrilling to see what Cedarville is continuing to move forward in advance, especially in today's higher ed market, which is very, very challenging,' Smith said. St. Johns River Ferry back on the water after weeks out of service for repairs
For the first time in close to six weeks, the St. Johns River Ferry opened up for people looking for a quicker trip to and from work, home or a weekend trip. Action News Jax told you the first week of May when the ferry service went offline after the Jacksonville Transportation Authority said it hit the boarding ramp, leaving the Mayport Village side. JTA originally said inspections and repairs could take up to 12 weeks, but the authority says it was able to get the ferry back on the water two weeks ahead of schedule. 'I don't like to really go over the Dames Point. I take it every day. So if I have a chance to take the ferry or a nice scenic route, I'm definitely on board,' said Max, one of the riders taking the ferry from Mayport Village to Fort George for work. >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< Riders tell Action News Jax that having the ferry service suspended led to many more hours of driving over the last few weeks than they would have normally done. For some, it meant having to go onto I-95 and over the Dames Point Bridge as their way of getting across the St. Johns River and into Mayport. 'It's a 45-minute drive to go around everything,' said one of the riders after Action News Jax boarded the ferry. 'Having the ferry back open is very convenient and it's a nice environment.' Even though the ferry was away for more than a month, there's work being done to bring another boat on board. Action News Jax told you last fall, that JTA received a $15.6 million federal grant to buy a hybrid diesel-electric ferry to add to its St. Johns River service. JTA tells Action News Jax it's on schedule to be on the water by fall 2028. JTA says the ferry is now back on its regular schedule. A longtime Kettering bowling alley now has a new owner. Strike & Spare is one of the largest family-owned operations in the country, according to the social media post.
