USA TODAY journalist gets help from staff for 2025 Oscars look
Anthony Robledo was assigned to cover his first Academy Awards, but didn't have a tuxedo. A fellow reporter helped style him for the show.
LOS ANGELES − It began, as most good ideas do, on a walk.
This motley crew known as USA TODAY's National Trending Team was called to Nashville one year ago to test the novel idea of putting a group of journalists in a room together for two days.
On our first night in town, the group of us normally responsible for the night's watch on the news agreed that we would eat at one of the restaurants in the city's food hall that is de rigueur for any municipality attempting to style itself as cosmopolitan.
"It's roughly a one-mile walk," texted the night's organizer, not knowing that a path over a river and through the woods would be less treacherous than the one from The Tennessean's offices to Assembly Food Hall.
Somewhere along West End Avenue, our entertainment enthusiast Anthony Robledo decided to drop the news that he would be attending the Oscars for the first time with a nonchalance that disagreed with the facts at hand.
In the congratulations, a question fueled by years of slinging suits at a Brooks Brothers in Phoenix and a lifetime of #menswear consumption bubbled: "Do you have a tux?"
That question began a two-week dash to outfit our Guy Friday for Hollywood's biggest night.
Tuxedo needed for Oscars quickly, inexpensively
Purchasing clothes, especially tailored clothing, out of an immediate need is less than ideal, and the specificity and lack of time for this situation compounded the difficulty.
When dealing with a piece like a tuxedo, one has to balance the ease of purchase with the cost and time needed to find the correct fit and alterations.
A guideline was added to the mission by both editorial suggestion and financial reality: acquire the clothes as inexpensively as possible.
With the quick road of a purchase from menswear value stalwart Spier and Mackay out of the question, we would need the blessing of the notably fickle thrift gods.
After Anthony provided the key measurements − chest just below the crook of the arm and an honest assessment of his waist circumference − the hunt for a 38 short was on.
This would be the point in the movie where a montage of hunting for trying on tuxedos at various thrift stores would go, however the news machine required us to feed it so organizing an in-person hunt was not possible.
Efforts were made on eBay using Boolean searches, a more refined method of combing through the virtual flea market, though none of the options would be able to reach Southern California in time. Trawling Etsy yielded one option that was adequate but did not inspire joy.
With the internet failing us, it was time to do something unthinkable − call people.
While Crowley Vintage, the vintage Mecca in New York, did not have any options, Richard's Fabulous Finds in Chicago had the one.
Photos sent from the eponymous owner showed that he had undersold the double-breasted tuxedo with grosgrain facings that would have fit in during Hollywood's golden age.
Anthony plunked down the $295 plus taxes and shipping for the tuxedo, and Richard handed it over to FedEx as quickly as he could so that it would get to Anthony in Orange County with a couple of days to spare.
It would get to him in time, right?
Minimizing other risks
Since we had our centerpiece on its way, I wanted to minimize the worry on other elements of the outfit.
Black tie, the dress code tuxedos fall under, calls for tuxedo shirts that have French cuffs, take studs and either a pleated or pique bib. SuitSupply offered (and still has) a version of a tuxedo shirt with the studs included, knocking two items out in a $140 purchase.
Did Anthony give me the wrong neck size when I first went to pick it up for him at the Century City location? Yes, yes, he did. However, there is a reason we keep physical stores and when we met to put things together, it was an easy process to find the correct size and swap it out for the shirt.
Given that we did not know if this would be a one-off at the time, I laid out shoe options from eBay that were certain to get in before the show and would be useful for Anthony's day-to-day wardrobe. Naturally, he picked the most casual option − a pair of Peal and Co. black cap-toe oxfords sold under the banner of my long-ago employer, Brooks Brothers. They'd get him through, though.
The Thursday before the ceremony, Anthony got an update that the tuxedo that should have been delivered that afternoon was delayed until the next day.
Nothing to worry about, right?
That Friday, I picked up the accoutrement that remained outstanding from the venerable Beverly Hills haberdasher Carrol Custom: a grosgrain bow tie (self-tie because pre-tied is for children), formal braces and a pair of black over-the-calf socks.
While the new generation sprung from the foundational Carrol and Co. may not be a household name, for my money there is no greater source of institutional clothing knowledge − with a select few equaling it − in the City of Angels.
Was this a splurge, yes, as the bill nearly equaled that of the tuxedo itself, but the ability to say that the only outstanding pieces were the shoes and the tuxedo was worth the premium.
As I was heading away from the madness that is Rodeo Drive, I was alerted to the news that the shoes had come in early, while the tuxedo was on a delivery truck that was still nowhere to be found. We had passed the point at which having alterations done was possible, so if it got in that night or Saturday, there wouldn't be much of a difference.
FedEx delivers on Saturday, right?
Not in this instance
I was rousted awake the Saturday morning ahead of the ceremony with a call from Anthony, the tuxedo was delayed until Monday. Apparently, the particular warehouse it landed in did not operate on Saturdays.
After some *ahem* terse calls with FedEx that yielded nothing, Anthony and I had less than 24 hours to come up with another plan.
Luckily, the Academy's dress code for the media specifies "formal attire or a dark elegant suit," and Anthony already had a black suit in his closet.
It would get him through, so long as he did not commit the sartorial sin of attempting to make it look like a tuxedo. The shirt and most of the accessories we purchased would have to be shelved, but at least the shoes would still be usable.
I loaned him a black knit tie and a white linen pocket square and, ya know, he didn't look half-bad.
That Sunday, Anthony was ensconced in the Academy Awards while his tuxedo was stuck in a drafty FedEx warehouse, longing for its destiny under the bright lights of Hollywood.
The tuxedo will, eventually, make it to the Oscars
Anthony did receive the tuxedo that following Monday. I may have uttered a few curses aimed at a particular delivery company once I had received the word of its arrival.
For buying it blind, the fit was better than one could ask for. A few nips and tucks were required, according to Anthony.
The tuxedo did, finally, make its red carpet debut in January at the Golden Globes and will be there at the Oscars, one year fashionably late.

How HBO's 'The Mortician' explores the horrors of the 'business of death'

Watching HBO's "The Mortician" docuseries transported me to my own 2002 funeral story, and memories of the aggressively solemn funeral-home director upselling my distraught mother with increasingly extravagant urns for my father's ashes. To our growing horror, the pinky ring-wearing salesman pushed an absurd marble number with an attached frame featuring a man in a full kilt, Balmoral bonnet and competition bagpipes. My puffy-eyed brother broke the sales spiel with, "But my dad didn't play the bagpipes." The atrocities documented in director Joshua Rofé's three-part series (which concludes Sunday, June 15, 9 ET/PT) about a funeral business gone wildly wrong are far graver than an overpriced urn. The dark, illegal mortuary practices depicted in the series exploded in the 1980s, and brought the once-respected Lamb Funeral Home in affluent Pasadena, California, into scandal, sparking ghoulish legal drama and and coverage on ABC's "Nightline." However, Rofé was inspired to delve into the story because of the trusting customers and neighbors who were preyed upon by the family-owned funeral home at their most vulnerable moments, when dealing with the loss of a loved one. "There was this crazy scandal," Rofé tells USA TODAY. "But I was intrigued by the idea of this family drama being a murder-mystery noir that explores the business of death and everything around that, the grief and loss." Need a break? His great-grandfather, Lawrence Lamb, founded the funeral home in 1929, run by Sconce's mother, Laurieanne, and her husband, Jerry. David took over the cremation side of the business in the 1980s and implemented drastic, illegal changes to increase profits. David carried out mass cremations, removed corpses' gold jewelry and dental fillings and illegally harvested corpses' organs for sale, prosecutors charged. In 1989, he pleaded guilty to 21 felony counts, which included violence by his group of employees on rival morticians. Rofé was surprised that Sconce agreed to extensive interviews, which started immediately after he was paroled in 2023 on unrelated 2011 gun charges (Sconce is shown being picked up at the prison gates). "I've interviewed people who the average person would consider scary," says Rofé. "But he was often devoid of humanity. To find someone who just lacks empathy is really hard." While denying most of the egregious charges, Sconce still defends the group cremations, claiming that "comingling of ash" in impossible-to-clean mortuary kilns is unavoidable. 'There's ash in there from dozens of people. It's a fact; it's how things are," Sconce says emphatically in the series premiere. "To me, the commingling of ash is not a big deal. I don't put any value in somebody after they're gone and dead. As they shouldn't when I'm gone and dead. It's not a person anymore." How was Sconce caught in 'The Mortician' In the '80s, Sconce set up a mass illegal cremation center in the remote desert of Hesperia, California. The cremation site was so prolific that a nearby World War II veteran, who had participated in the liberation of the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp, recognized the unmistakable smell of burnt corpses and alerted the police. "He said, 'I smell the burning flesh. That is a smell I will never forget,'" says Rofé. "That is what brings the operation down." Was Sconce's family involved in the illegal activities? Sconce's parents, including his seemingly empathetic mother, were swept up in the charges. This was shocking, considering Laurieanne, the funeral organist, was such an outwardly comforting presence to the mourners at Lamb Funeral Home. She was convicted in 1995 on nine charges, including conspiracy to remove body parts and unlawful authorization of the removal of eyes, hearts, lungs and brains from corpses. Each parent and David served more than three years in prison because of the scandal. "Many eyewitnesses testified that Jerry and Laurieanne were deeply involved," says Rofé. "This is a family drama in the sense that they were all in the trenches together." Have there been changes to prevent the crimes seen in 'The Mortician'? "The Mortician" features funeral professionals who decry the abhorrent practices depicted and point out changes made following the crimes at the Lamb Funeral Home — which had its license revoked by a state board on March 30, 1989, providing the nail in the coffin of the family business. My dear dad's ashes (presumably it's mostly his ashes) have a happy, bagpipe-free home in a simple urn placed in the living room. "The majority of the people in the mortuary business are exactly the type of people you want to encounter in your moment of grief," says Rofé. "But in any business, you run into somebody who cares about nothing but the bottom line. In this series, we examine what happens when that's the business of death."

From 'Jaws' to 'The Meg,' we rank the 10 best shark movies of all time For five decades, it hasn't been safe to go back into the water. Thanks, "Jaws." The big screen has played host to a never-ending spate of troublesome man-eating sharks ever since Steven Spielberg's killer-fish spectacle. And now's the time to celebrate all things Amity Island with the 50th anniversary of "Jaws" (originally released June 20, 1975). It was the first summer blockbuster and remains one of Spielberg's greatest hits in his storied career. Not to mention having the most iconic – and ominous – two-note musical theme ever. Since "Jaws," audiences have developed a deep hunger for these underwater antagonists – hello, Shark Week! – so we're ranking the top 10 shark movies ever. (It's probably worth noting that, like with basketball comedies, the quality drops off quickly after the first few.) And sorry, "Sharknado." 'Deep Blue Sea 3' (2020) The proudly B-movie "Deep Blue Sea" franchise has a penchant for seriously bonkers shark attacks. This third installment is no different: Tania Raymonde plays the head of a group of video-blogging environmentalists on an artificial island in the Mozambique Channel, and her marine biologist ex (Nathaniel Buzolic) shows up with a goon squad hunting a trio of genetically engineered, crazy-smart bull sharks. 'Meg 2: The Trench' (2023) The first half of this sequel is a dull underwater sci-fi action flick all about folks turning on each other for natural resources and Jason Statham's diver dude saving his trouble-magnetic daughter. Then director Ben Wheatley lets loose with the creature feature we came for, where our hero has to deal with a trio of hungry megalodons, a kaiju-sized octopus and other freaky monsters attacking "Fun Island," a beachy locale that maniacally lives up to its name. Where to watch: Max, Apple TV, Amazon, Fandango at Home. 8. 'Jaws 2' (1978) Imagine the pressure of following "Jaws" without Steven Spielberg and two of your top actors. But unlike the two sequels that came later, this follow-up wasn't absolute chum. The shark is still crazy destructive – even taking on a helicopter – but what's neat here is the return of Roy Scheider as the police chief who's voted out when the powers-that-be don't believe another beast is in the water, but who saves the day anyway. Where to watch: Tubi, Apple TV, Amazon, Fandango at Home. 7. 'The Meg' (2018) It does give you the hand-to-fin combat you want from Jason Statham battling a 75-foot-long prehistoric shark, but getting there is a bit arduous: A bunch of researchers plumb new depths off the coast of Shanghai and accidentally unleash the Meg. It's all pretty corny and earnest until the ginormous shark starts wreaking havoc on ships and people in inner tubes. Where to watch: Max, Apple TV, Amazon, Fandango at Home. 6. 'The Reef' (2010) A bunch of Australian friends (including a pair of lovers) sailing a yacht to Indonesia crash their boat on a coral reef and are stranded in the middle of the ocean. Their only hope is to get to a nearby island, a situation made harder – and much more tense – by a clever great white, noteworthy for being a real shark rather than a CGI one like most films use. Extra points for a headless giant turtle corpse. Where to watch: Apple TV, Amazon, Fandango at Home. 5. 'Open Water' (2003) This Sundance Film Festival breakout used actual sea life to add all-too-realism to its worst-case vacation scenario. A married couple go on a scuba expedition to help their relationship and wind up getting stranded, with jellyfish stinging and sharks circling. It's an unnerving narrative that aims for authentic emotions and some very hard decisions when it comes to survival. Where to watch: Tubi, Pluto TV, Apple TV, Amazon, Fandango at Home. 4. 'Under Paris' (2024) Not only did it nab a Stephen King Tweet of Approval, there's a lot to enjoy in this high-end B-movie. A scientist (Bérénice Bejo) partners with a cop (Nassim Lyes) for help when a man-eating menace begins a killing spree, sets up shop in the catacombs and threatens a major triathlon that's come to town. In addition to some "Jaws" nods (including a clueless mayor), the final act is full of fishy mayhem, all leading to one heck of a last-scene cliffhanger. Where to watch: Netflix. 3. 'The Shallows' (2016) The prettiest shark movie you'll ever see, it's essentially "Let's go surfing with Blake Lively in paradise" until her character becomes the target of a hungry shark. A scene-stealing seagull is her only confidante as she tends to a really nasty leg bite – luckily, she's pre-med! – and uses her smarts (and a flare gun) to foil the shark's meal plans. Where to watch: Apple TV, Amazon, Fandango at Home. 2. 'Deep Blue Sea' (1999) Sure, the ridiculous factor is high when you consider that the sci-fi thriller centers on super-duper-smart sharks born from the studies of scientists working on an Alzheimer's cure. But it totally owns that silliness in an enjoyable way, like a shark using a dude strapped to a gurney as a battering ram. Bonus: The film offers up an all-time great movie death, a joyously gnarly munch you don't see coming until it's too late. Where to watch: Apple TV, Amazon, Fandango at Home. 1. 'Jaws' (1975) The seafaring masterpiece sinks every other shark movie in its utter perfection. Hollywood's first summer blockbuster is aces across the board, from sheer terror to the unforgettable John Williams score (which keeps the dread going even without the toothy predator). But what really elevates the film from creature feature to complex shark-ridden drama is the trio of main characters, including top cop Brody (Roy Scheider), nerdy oceanographer Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and Ahab-esque hunter Quint (Robert Shaw).
