
Lincolnshire care firms say they face struggle to hire locally
Care companies in Lincolnshire fear they will struggle to hire enough workers if the government stops them recruiting from overseas.The prime minister unveiled plans to ban recruitment of foreign care workers and tighten access to skilled worker visas, among other measures, on Monday in an effort to curb the level of legal immigration.Melanie Weatherley, who chairs the Lincolnshire Care Association, said her company, Walnut Care, began hiring overseas workers three years ago because it was unable to recruit locally "however hard we tried".The shortfall in staff had led to "waiting lists getting longer for people needing care".
"If we've got 10,000 vacancies in Lincolnshire, we can't go to the Department for Work and Pensions list of economically inactive, find 10,000 people and automatically assume they can do care," Ms Weatherley said. "You need to ask yourself, would you want them caring for your nearest and dearest?"Care work was not just a job, but "a cross between a career and a vocation," she added.The government's plans, set out by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, are designed to reduce net migration, which climbed to a record 906,000 over the year to June 2023, before falling to 728,000 in 2024.The measures include scrapping a visa scheme, set up by Boris Johnson's government, that allows firms to hire health and social care workers from overseas.Instead, companies will be required to hire British nationals or extend the visas of overseas workers already in the country.According to Home Office figures, this change could cut the number of workers coming to the UK by between 7,000 and 8,000 a year.Official estimates suggest that, even with workers from overseas, there were 131,000 vacancies in social care in England last year.The government has promised a new fair pay agreement for care staff and wants companies to recruit and train more people from the UK.
Libertas, a Lincolnshire-based care firm, serves more than 800 people a day in Lincolnshire, with overseas workers making up between 10% and 15% of a 400-strong staff.Director Tom Carter said the plans would "have an impact" on his workforce by reducing the pool of people the company had access to.He said recruiting people from the UK could be a struggle because of the way jobs in the care sector were perceived.The firm had overseas workers who "love the job" and "come to make a difference". He added: "They're the ones that come stay and make a difference every day."
Prince Thakur has been a care worker for two-and-a-half years, having arrived from India in 2021 to study for a masters degree in business.Now a team leader, he said the role was a skilled one. Mr Thakur said: "People who think that you don't need skill, they should come and try for one week and then they'll get to know."Frances Ledbury, a Hull-based solicitor specialising in immigration law, said new rules introduced in April meant care firms already had to attempt to recruit locally first."We speak to people all day, every day who struggle to fill those gaps," she added. "This is going to make their job a lot harder."

Badenoch says organisations should be able to decide if staff can wear burkas
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch has said employers should be able to decide if their staff can wear burkas in the workplace. Mrs Badenoch also said people who come to her constituency surgeries must remove their face coverings 'whether it's a burka or a balaclava'. Ms Badenoch posted a video on X of part of her interview with the Telegraph, in which she said: 'My view is that people should be allowed to wear whatever they want, not what their husband is asking them to wear or what their community says that they should wear. 'I personally have strong views about face coverings. 'If you come into my constituency surgery, you have to remove your face covering, whether it's a burka or a balaclava. 'I'm not talking to people who are not going to show me their face. 'Organisations should be able to decide what their staff wear for instance, it shouldn't be something that people should be able to override.' She added that France has a ban and has 'worse problems than we do in this country on integration'. On Wednesday, Reform's newest MP Sarah Pochin asked Sir Keir Starmer during Prime Minister's Questions whether he would support such a ban. Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice said his party has 'triggered a national discussion'. Asked if he wants to ban burkas, Mr Tice told GB News on Sunday: 'We've triggered a national discussion. I'm very concerned about them (burkas). 'Frankly, I think they are repressive. I think that they make women second-class citizens. 'We're a Christian nation. We have equality between the sexes, and I'm very concerned, and if someone wants to convince me otherwise, well come and talk to me. 'But at the moment, my view is that I think we should follow seven other nations across Europe that have already banned them.' He called for a debate on the topic to 'hear where the country's mood is'. Meanwhile, shadow home secretary Chris Philp said 'employers should be allowed to decide whether their employees can be visible or not', when discussing face coverings. Asked on the BBC's Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg programme if the Conservative Party's position is not to speak to people who cover their face, Mr Philp said of Mrs Badenoch: 'Well she was talking specifically about her constituency surgery I think, and it is definitely the case that employers should be allowed to decide whether their employees can be visible or not. 'But I don't think this is necessarily the biggest issue facing our country right now. 'There's a legitimate debate to have about the burka. 'You've got, obviously, arguments about personal liberty and choice and freedom on one side, and arguments about causing divisions in society and the possibility of coercion on the other. 'That is a debate I think we as a country should be having, but as Kemi said, it's probably not the biggest issue our nation faces today.' Asked if he would talk to people who would not show their face, the Croydon South MP said: 'I have in the past spoken to people obviously wearing a burka – I represent a London constituency – but everybody can make their own choices, that's the point she was making, each employer should be able to make their own choices.'

Minister dismisses US misgivings over Chinese 'super embassy' in London - as Tories warn of 'espionage base'
A minister has dismissed reported US misgivings about plans for a Chinese "super embassy" near London's financial districts. Peter Kyle told Sky News' Sunday Morning with Trevor Phillips that security concerns will be "taken care of assiduously in the planning process". According to The Sunday Times, the White House has warned Downing Street against the proposed massive embassy at Royal Mint Court. The site is between financial hubs in the City of London and Canary Wharf and close to three data centres, raising concerns about espionage risk. Asked for the government's view on the risk, Mr Kyle said: "These issues will be taken care of assiduously in the planning process. "But just to reassure people, we deal with embassies and these sorts of infrastructure issues all the time. "We are very experienced and we are very aware of these sorts of issues constantly, not just when new buildings are being done, but all the time." He added that America and Britain "share intelligence iteratively" and if they raise security concerns through the planning process "we will have a fulsome response for them". However, shadow home secretary Chris Philp said he shared the US's concerns. He told Trevor Phillips: "I agree with the United States. We think it is a security risk in the government. "The Conservatives were very clear. We should not be allowing the Chinese to build the super embassy. It is likely to become a base for their pan-European espionage activities." He added that underneath the sites are cables connecting the City of London to Canary Wharf and these could be intercepted. China has been attempting to revise plans for the Royal Mint building, opposite the Tower of London, since purchasing it in 2018. The proposal for the embassy, which would be China's largest in Europe, was previously rejected by Tower Hamlets council in 2022. However, Beijing resubmitted it in August after Labour won the election, and the plans were "called in" by Angela Rayner, the deputy prime minister and housing secretary. It means that an inspector will be appointed to carry out an inquiry into the proposal, but the decision ultimately rests with central government rather than the local authority. Two large protests were held at the site in February and March, which organisers claimed involved thousands of people.

Some states have enthusiastically embraced President Donald Trump 's mass deportation operation. However, others are still refusing to give up their 'sanctuary city' status. An analysis by the Daily Mail shows that removals and deportations do not necessarily line up with the states that are, and are not, cooperating most with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). For example, California is one of the states that has not signed agreements between federal immigration officials and local law enforcement agencies. But there were still 555,523 removals in March 2025, which is the second highest of any state, according to data from the nonpartisan Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC). Florida saw the third-highest number of deportations in March. The sunshine state has by far the most deals, or pending deals, allowing ICE to delegate state and local law enforcement officers with the authority to perform immigration functions. The deals are officially known as 287 (g) agreements, and Florida has nearly 300 of them, which is the majority of those in place across the country. The U.S. city with the most deportations so far is Houston, Texas, where 2,460 immigrants have been ordered for removal. At the end of March, Miami-Dade County, Florida had the most people with deportation court cases outstanding, while Cook County, Illinois came in second with 113,959 pending cases. Los Angeles, California has 112,090 deportation cases in the pipeline. ICE notes on their website regarding 287 (g) agreements that there are six states where laws prohibit local police from entering into contracts with federal immigration enforcement. The states blocking this are California, Oregon, Washington, Illinois, New Jersey and Connecticut. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said they are 'sanctuary states.' ICE is pursuing agreements in Vermont, Rhode Island and Delaware. The most aggressive push to round up undocumented aliens and cooperate with federal immigration enforcement through the 287 (g) agreements is in six southern states – Florida, Virginia, Texas, Georgia, and North and South Carolina. ICE has been conducting raids nearly since day one of Trump taking back control of the White House. There have been hundreds of thousands of arrests and deportations of those in the U.S. illegally since then. GOP-led governments in states like Florida, Texas and Virginia have made it a point to push their local agencies to create partnerships with federal agents. That has led to some very high-profile raids with cartel leaders and entire gang operations being taken out. Activity among federal agents is also especially high in areas like New York, California and Illinois – even though those states are much less cooperative and even create roadblocks for immigration enforcement. According to TRAC immigration data, of the approximately 42,000 people ordered for removal in March, nearly 50 percent involved those without legal status living in Texas, California, New York, Virginia and Florida. The agreements help federal agents with the massive work load of rounding up and deporting illegal immigrants. The border is closed under Trump, meaning the White House has shifted its focus to deportation operations. But the data paints a picture of how there are not enough federal agents to meet Trump's goal to deport one million immigrants every year of his administration. Of particular concern to the federal government is the fact that, in some places where there is a need for more agents due to the high influx of illegal immigrants, the state and local authorities are unwilling – or unable – to partner.
