MORWELL, Australia (Reuters) -The trial of an Australian woman accused of murdering three of her estranged husband's elderly relatives using toxic mushrooms entered its final stages on Wednesday, with the jury soon to begin its deliberations in a case that has gripped the nation.
Erin Patterson, 50, is charged with the murders of her mother-in-law Gail Patterson, father-in-law Donald Patterson and Gail's sister, Heather Wilkinson, along with the attempted murder of Ian Wilkinson, Heather's husband, in July 2023.
The prosecution accuses her of foraging for poisonous death cap mushrooms and knowingly adding them to individual portions of Beef Wellington that she served to her guests at her home in Leongatha, a town of about 6,000 people some 135 km (84 miles) southeast of Melbourne.
Patterson denies the charges, which carry a life sentence, with her defence calling the deaths a "terrible accident".
Justice Christopher Beale, the presiding judge, began his second day of instructions to the jury on Wednesday at the Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court in Morwell, a former coal mining town whose best known tourist attractions until the trial were a rose garden and a regional art gallery.
Beale has said the process will take until at least the end of the day, meaning the 14-member jury will retire to consider their verdict on Thursday at the earliest. Their decision must be unanimous.
Outside, despite the winter cold and rain, members of the public began queuing for the limited seats in the court hours before proceedings began.
"I am a true crime fanatic," said Philip Mayers, a social worker who got up at 5am and drove two hours from Melbourne, the state capital, to get his place in the court.
"It's the uniqueness of it, you don't hear it every day."
'MEDIA FRENZY'
The trial has caused a sensation in Morwell, where Patterson requested to be tried rather than Melbourne.
Laura Heller, the owner of Jay Dee's Cafe across the road from the modest two-storey court building, said business had tripled since the trial began on April 29.
"Even though it's not great circumstances, it has been very good for our community because it's brought people from outside the area," she said.
Journalists, podcasters and documentary crews from domestic and international media have descended on the town for the proceedings, which British magazine The Spectator dubbed "Australia's trial of the century".
Public broadcaster ABC's daily podcast on the trial is currently the most popular in Australia, while streaming platform Stan says it will soon be airing a documentary on the trial and "media frenzy" surrounding the case.
The Cedar Lodge Motel next to the court is fully booked, unusual outside the peak summer season, duty manager John Nicoll said.
"It has been a bit of a boom for the motel and for the area in general," he said.

Russia says it wants rule of law in Armenia after foiling of alleged coup plot there

REUTERS/Evgenia Novozhenina/File photo MOSCOW (Reuters) -The Kremlin, commenting on reports of a foiled coup plot in Armenia, said it was interested in law and order being upheld in the South Caucasus country but that the events there were an internal matter for Yerevan. Armenian authorities on Wednesday arrested a prominent archbishop who led protests last year against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and accused him of orchestrating a plot to overthrow the government. Armenia is a treaty ally of Russia and traditionally a close partner, although bilateral relations have become strained in recent years as Yerevan grows closer to the West. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also said Russia hoped there would be no new escalation of tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan as the two sides are close to signing a peace deal. Body found in search of Swiss village buried by glacier debris

ZURICH (Reuters) -Search parties combing the Swiss Alpine village that was buried last month after the collapse of a glacier have found human remains, police said. Police did not confirm if the remains were of a 64-year-old man who was reported missing in Blatten after it was engulfed by millions of cubic meters of ice, mud and rock. The village's 300 residents had already been evacuated earlier in May after part of the mountain behind the Birch Glacier began to crumble. "As part of a coordinated search operation in the Tennmatten area of Blatten, human remains were found and recovered," Valais Cantonal Police said late on Tuesday. Formal identification of the remains is now underway, the police said. (Reporting by John Revill, Editing by Miranda Murray)

Prosecution seeks prohibition order against Na'imah and associates over Jersey-based assets

KUALA LUMPUR: The prosecution today applied for a prohibition order against Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid and her associates to prevent them from dealing with her purported assets in the British crown dependency of Jersey worth US$157.5 million (RM667.26 million) and £85 million (RM490.44 million). Deputy public prosecutor Maziah Mohaide made the ex-parte application to obtain the order under Section 53 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds from Unlawful Activity Act 2001 (AMLA). She told the court that the application came after investigations conducted under Section 113 of the Income Tax Act and Section 4(1) of AMLA. "The assets are believed to have been obtained by Na'imah or her associates in Malaysia but it was not declared to the Inland Revenue Board," she said. The DPP, however, did not go into details of the assets involved. Maziah also informed the court that they had earlier this month applied for a prohibition order for Na'imah's assets in the United Kingdom and Singapore, worth £132 million and RM544 million respectively. Meanwhile, Na'imah's lawyer Syed Afiq Syed Albakri applied to intervene in the proceedings and requested to be provided with all related documents. He said, as the application had directly touched on his client's rights, it was only just that the matter was made inter partes (involving all parties) and not ex-parte. "The prosecution should present reasonable grounds to support their application. For the sake of justice, it is appropriate for us to be given the space to intervene and be furnished with the related documents. "We also ask that the prosecution inform us early if there are any sort of similar applications in the future," he said. Jamil then directed Syed Afiq to file the official application to intervene to the court and set Aug 22 for hearing.
