Vigil held in memory of teenager found dead after going missing weeks before

Yahoo6 hours ago

A vigil has been held in memory of a teenager who was missing for four weeks before his body was found.
Cole Cooper, 19, was last seen by his family on May 2 or 3, and was reported missing by them on May 9.
He was seen on CCTV Sunday May 4 in Longcroft, Falkirk, at around 6am, and was also reported to have been seen by a witness on May 7, asking for a lift.
On June 6, his body was found in a wooded area of Banknock, Falkirk, with police treating his death as 'unexplained'.
A vigil was held in the grounds of Glenskirlie Hotel in Banknock on Sunday evening, where Mr Cooper was remembered by hundreds of people.
Footage of the event was shared on a Facebook page which had been set up to trace Mr Cooper.
His mother, Wendy Stewart, held up a flare at the memorial and comforted two young children, while older sibling Connor Cooper gave a tearful speech, and thanked people in the community who had helped with the search.
Older brother Mr Cooper said: 'He is one of the most loving and caring boys there was.'
He added: 'As a family we will continue to demand for answers and get justice for you.'
Mr Cooper's aunt, Aimee Tennie, also gave a speech and said her nephew was 'the most handsome, caring, loving boy.'
She said: 'This little boy wanted nothing more than to have a family of his own and to have his business thrive.
'We are absolutely broken as a family. It doesn't feel real. We don't want to say goodbye to you.'
A huge search was launched involving air and marine units, and police scoured more than 2,000 hours of CCTV footage.
Mr Cooper was last seen by family on either May 2 or 3 and he appeared on CCTV at about 6am on May 4 in Longcroft, where he tried but failed to access his father's home.
He was last seen at about 8.45pm on May 7 on the A803 near Cumbernauld Road in Longcroft, when he asked a school friend for a lift, which he was not given.
Police said that establishing Mr Cooper's movements between Sunday May 4 and Wednesday May 7 is a priority for officers.
On Friday, Police Scotland said that Mr Cooper's body had been formally identified.
Chief Inspector Alex Hatrick said: 'My thoughts are with Cole's family and friends at this time and officers will continue to offer them support.
'As our inquiries progress, we are ensuring the family is kept informed with all aspects of the investigation.
'A dedicated team of detectives is working to piece together Cole's movements leading up to his death.
'Again, I would urge people to think back and please contact police with any information, no matter how small it might seem.'
Anyone with information should contact police on 101, quoting incident number 828 of Friday May 9.

Anti-social youths spark dispersal order in town

A dispersal order has been put in place in a town after groups of youths were found to be "intimidating, threatening and frightening people". The order in Maghull on Merseyside, which runs until 23:00 BST and includes the town's main parks, follows recent incidents of antisocial behaviour as seen at Maghull Cricket Club. Young people were fighting on the cricket field - some armed with hammers - during a junior coaching session last month. Sefton Neighbourhood Inspector Kenneth Sumner said the dispersal order was to "make sure that everyone can feel safe in Sefton". The order gives police and police community support traffic officers the power to order people to leave an area if they are suspected of committing, or being likely to commit, a criminal offence or anti-social behaviour. Maghull Cricket Club has made about 25 police reports since July last year about people harassing players, setting off fireworks and vandalising its equipment. It is now seeking funding to help with the costs of building a large fence. Insp Sumner said: "We will not tolerate groups intimidating, threatening and frightening people visiting, living and working in the Maghull area, or anywhere across Merseyside." He said many groups of young people had "stayed out of trouble, socialising with friends", but "some have been involved in anti-social behaviour". The issue was "a top priority" and the force was working with local businesses and the council and examining CCTV to identify suspects, he added. Under the legislation officers have the power to seize any item including vehicles and it is an offence for anyone directed to leave the area to return. Minn. gov thanks law enforcement for bringing lawmaker's alleged killer to justice after two-day manhunt

After a grueling two-day manhunt, Vance Boelter, the suspect accused of shooting two Minnesota state lawmakers, was captured and Minnesota lawmakers and the governor are expressing their appreciation for those who are helping bring him to justice. House Speaker Lisa Demuth took to social media to express how glad she was that the suspect was now in custody and the nightmare was ending. "I'm grateful that this nightmare has come to an end with the suspect captured so he can be charged, prosecuted, & punished for the horror he has wrought on MN. Thank you to the local, state, & federal officials who ensured this evil man faces justice," she wrote. More than 20 agencies worked together to bring in the suspect and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz thanked them for leaving their families "to run into danger and deliver justice for Melissa and Mark Hortman." Boelter, 57, was captured in Sibley County after a two-day manhunt. He allegedly killed former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, early Saturday morning at their Brooklyn Park home in Minneapolis before allegedly shooting State Sen. John Hoffman, also a Democrat, and his wife, Yvette, in their nearby Champlin home in a related attack. Walz made note that the people of the U.S. need to come together and shouldn't accept violence as a norm. "As a country we cannot become numb to this violence. We are a deeply divided nation. That has become even more clear over the last two days. The way we move forward and solve the problems facing our nation is not through hate. It is not through violence. It is through humility, and grace, and civility," he said in a statement Sunday night. He also asked that members of the community acknowledge the pain and grief endured by the Hortman's family and that they take comfort in the couple's memory. "To Melissa and Mark's family: I cannot fathom your pain, your grief. Let us take solace in their memory, in Melissa's legacy of selfless, pragmatic, gentle public service. The state of Minnesota grieves with you" said Walz. "To our law enforcement officers: thank you for your courage, your service, and your professionalism. You have saved lives," Walz expressed to those involved in the arrest. "As we heal, we will not let fear win," he said. U.S. Sen. Amy Klombuchar of Minnesota thanked all law enforcement officers involved in tracking down the suspect, calling their efforts "a mammoth and heroic effort." Fox News Digital's Audrey Conklin contributed to this article.
