MACC seizes RM85.6mil in assets in highway funds probe
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized and frozen assets and bank accounts worth an estimated RM85.6mil as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged misuse of sukuk funds linked to a Klang Valley highway project.
The probe centres on a concessionaire with a "Tan Sri" title suspected of diverting the project's funds for personal use.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said seizures include 14 individual bank accounts with RM4.5mill and eight company accounts with RM33mil.
Also confiscated were luxury vehicles (RM7.65mil), designer handbags (RM3mil), jewellery (RM6mil), high-end watches (RM7mil) and properties valued at RM24.5mil.
"We believe hundreds of millions in sukuk funds were channelled to the contractor's company owned by the Tan Sri and later misused for personal interests rather than the intended highway project," Azam said.
The funds were allegedly transferred to multiple entities, including proxy companies and the personal account of the Tan Sri's wife, and used to acquire assets such as real estate, luxury vehicles and goods and to fund gambling activities.
Azam added that the money could also have been used to finance local and overseas property purchases and investments, which were concealed through layered transactions designed to obscure their origin.
As of now, investigators have not yet recorded a statement from the Tan Sri as he is in hospital.
"We are reviewing the acquisition trail of these assets and obtaining relevant bank documents, including those tied to the suspect, to support our analysis," he said.
To date, 45 individuals have had their statements recorded, with another 30 to 50 witnesses expected to be called in. Family members of the Tan Sri may also be summoned.
Earlier reports noted that MACC had seized various luxury items, including handbags, jewellery, watches, vehicles, cash, and high-end residences, worth around RM32mil, believed to be linked to the same individual.
During a Thursday operation, officers also discovered a storage room stocked with luxury alcoholic beverages valued at about RM3mil, suspected to be tied to money laundering activities.
All assets were seized under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 for further investigation. – Bernama

Call for review of laws to prevent child abuse
PUTRAJAYA: Several existing legal provisions are being reviewed to introduce clearer and stronger obligations for parents and guardians to prevent abuse and sexual assault on children, says Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (pic). The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) said the move would include proposing amendments to make it mandatory for parents and guardians to monitor their children's online activities, as well as to participate in digital safety awareness and education programmes actively. 'This approach reflects the principle of shared responsibility in safeguarding future generations from the growing threat of sexual crimes in the digital age,' she said in a statement yesterday. Azalina said this in her keynote address, titled 'Creating a Safer Digital Future: Malaysia's Legislative Approach to Online Child Protection' on the first day of the Tashkent Law Spring International Legal Forum 2025 in Uzbekistan, where she is currently on an official visit. In her address, Azalina also mentioned Malaysia's move to strengthen online child protection laws and called on the international legal community to embrace a shared moral duty in addressing crimes against children. She stressed the importance of ensuring that perpetrators of such offences are brought to justice without exception, underlining that protecting children in the digital space requires global cooperation and collective will. During the visit, Azalina also had the opportunity to hold a bilateral meeting with her counterpart, Uzbek Justice Minister Akbar Tashkulov, on May 30, where both parties agreed to sign a new memorandum of understanding (MOU). 'This MOU will be in effect for three years and covers important aspects such as the exchange of legal expertise, cooperation in the reform of justice institutions and strengthening the capacity of the judicial systems of both countries. 'This move is very significant in supporting efforts towards a more responsive and dynamic legal system,' she said. Azalina also had a bilateral meeting with the Qatari Minister of Justice and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, Ibrahim Ali Issa Al Hassan Al Mohannadi. She said the meeting opened a new chapter in strategic cooperation between Malaysia and Qatar in various aspects of legal reforms, including global best practices in the protection of human rights and the administration of justice. 'I believe that bilateral relations such as this not only strengthen diplomatic relations, but also broaden the horizon of the country's institutional reform to the international level,' she said, Bernama reported. In addition, Azalina also received a courtesy visit from the Head of Division and Senior Counsellor, Directorate of Public Governance, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Dr Tatyana Teplova. She said the meeting marked the beginning of strategic cooperation between Malaysia and the OECD, particularly in the aspects of strengthening the justice system, upholding the rule of law and improving the country's digital governance.

Suspect nabbed 3 hours after robbing teen, elderly woman in Gelang Patah
ISKANDAR PUTERI: Police arrested a 33-year-old man just three hours after he allegedly attempted to rob a teenage girl and her grandmother at a house in Gelang Patah here on Sunday. Iskandar Puteri district police chief ACP M. Kumarasan said in the 11.30am incident, the victims, a 14-year-old Chinese national and her grandmother, in her 70s, were at home when they were confronted by an unknown man. "The suspect ordered the victims to hand over their valuables before choking one of them, resulting in a struggle between the suspect and both victims. "The suspect then fled the scene after failing to obtain the valuables. Both victims sustained injuries and were referred to the hospital for treatment," he said in a statement yesterday. Acting on information received, a team from the Iskandar Puteri district police headquarters' Criminal Investigation Division together with officers from the Tanjung Kupang police station arrested the suspect at 2.30pm on the same day. A background check revealed that the suspect has two prior criminal records, while the initial urine screening test came back negative for drugs. "Police also seized a T-shirt and a pair of shorts believed to have been worn during the incident. The suspect has been remanded for seven days from June 2 to June 8 to assist in the investigations," he added. The case is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery. The offence is punishable by up to 20 years' imprisonment and may also include a fine or whipping, if convicted. M. Kumarasan also expressed his appreciation to members of the public for providing information that led to the swift arrest of the suspect. – BERNAMA
