UNC coach Bill Belichick preparing for season, drowning out 'noise'

Reuters2 days ago

June 10 - Bill Belichick said he's put up with outside chatter throughout his career and isn't about to let it derail his mission of rebuilding the football program at North Carolina.
"I'm really focused on doing my job here at Carolina, to help our football team, and just to get better every day, to stack those days together, training days, preparation days, days out on the field. And we've done that," he said Tuesday at a news conference in Chapel Hill, N.C.
"So that's my big focus. I mean, is there noise out there? We've always dealt with that. Really our job is to build the football team also build their individual career. So that's really where we're at."
There has been plenty of noise surrounding the 73-year-old NFL legend since he was hired in December to lead the Tar Heels. Much of it has focused on his personal relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson, and he shifted away from talk to about her; all he confirmed is "she doesn't have any role in the UNC football program," as some speculated she did. Instead, he focused on topics such as the Tar Heels' quarterback room, building a team in the transfer portal era and the excitement of working on a college campus.
Assembling the team has been an undertaking. Many of the players who were part of coach Mack Brown's (6-7, 3-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) 2024 team are gone.
"Lot of new faces since the end of last season, it's been a lot of turnover, almost two thirds of the roster from where it was in January," he said.
"A lot of new faces -- but definitely coming together. Training has been good. We made a lot of improvement. It's good team chemistry, a lot of individual improvement. Obviously we got a long way to go, but we're working hard and making progress, and so we're excited about that."
Belichick isn't clear yet who will start at quarterback. Max Johnson, entering his sixth college season and at his third school, suffered a season-ending knee injury in the opening win against Minnesota in 2024. South Alabama transfer Gio Lopez also is on board.
"We've got some freshmen, we've got Max who has got some experience, and Gio -- we'll see how it all plays out honestly," Belichick said. "You know, none of them, with the exception of Max for a handful of plays last year, none of them have really taking any snaps here. So it'll be good to see how all that plays out."
Belichick said his team is continuing to evolve, even with the Sept. 1 opener against TCU not far off. He's not quite sure just what he's got.
"We'll have a lot better idea in training camp. There were several players that left the team after spring ball, and then we have a lot of new ones, a lot of new faces, both incoming freshmen and players who came from transfers. And so we'll just have to see how all that plays out. I think where we were then, and honestly, where we are even today, is we're at a different spot," he said.
"So it'll be interesting to see how it all comes together. We've got a lot of work to do, but it's certainly trending in the right direction."

Donald Trump ally bids for £170m Crystal Palace stake

John Textor is considering three sale offers to rescue Crystal Palace 's Europa League place – including one from Donald Trump ally Woody Johnson. Telegraph Sport understands the New York Jets owner tabled a 43 per cent purchase proposal, marginally less in overall value than two others being discussed. Raine Group, the New York broker which secured sales for Chelsea and Manchester United, had been in discussion with parties on behalf of Textor since last year. However, the American is conscious of the club's need to now secure a quick transaction to guarantee European competition next season. A quick sale for as little as £170 million has been mooted for Eagle Football Holdings' 43 per cent stake as Textor's ownership of Lyon leaves Palace facing the threat of expulsion from Europe's second tier. Industry insiders believe a purchase of Textor's shares by the current co-owners, Josh Harris and David Blitzer, is the most likely outcome this summer. However, options include at least two other proposals from the US, one of which has been established for months. A deal with Johnson, 78, is viewed as an outside shot. He is a controversial figure in US sport, with the New York Jets facing scrutiny last year following reports of 'controversial and dysfunctional practices' under his watch. Johnson bought the New York Jets in 2000, with the NFL franchise now estimated to be worth around $6.9 billion. The Jets' $1.6 billion MetLife Stadium will hold next year's World Cup final. Johnson is also well-known in UK politics. The long-time Republican Party donor was appointed as US ambassador to the UK during Trump's first term. His brother, Christopher, took over Jets operations during his post. The American businessman has long been interested in buying a Premier League club, having approached Raine about Chelsea in 2022. Other suitors for Palace, meanwhile, are believed to include NBA star Jimmy Butler, part of a consortium of sport and entertainment executives that is expected to make an offer. That separate proposal was first reported by The Athletic on Wednesday night. Another international consortium advised by the veteran football financier Keith Harris also previously expressed interest. Mr Harris's group would probably execute its deal through the recently incorporated Sportbank vehicle. The Sportsbank consortium – worth upwards of £200 million – is said to be made up of a collection of investors from North America, Canada, Europe and the Gulf. Textor, who previously expressed interest in buying Everton, is willing to find another club as soon as possible. Textor acquired his holding in Palace in 2021 for about £90 million. His multi-club network Eagle Football also includes French club Olympique Lyonnais, Rio-based Botafogo and RWD Molenbeek in Belgium. His priority is to pursue a club which can accept players across the group. Crystal Palace's overall value is said to be around £500 million – around the same price that Everton was valued at, minus debt, during Farhad Moshiri's protracted sale. Stanley Tang, of the US-based food delivery company DoorDash, denied suggestions that he was also in discussions to buy Textor's stake. Chairman Steve Parish, Textor and his fellow US businessmen Harris and Blitzer oversee the running of the Selhurst Park club as general partners. However, Textor has repeatedly hinted at frustrations that he does not exert as much club control as he would like. Uefa is set to inform Palace whether they are in breach of its multi-club ownership rules by June 30 – although the matter may then be taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) which would delay a final verdict. The FA Cup winners met Uefa officials last week in a two-hour meeting in an attempt to avoid being barred. Palace insist there is no sharing of information or staff or facilities with the French side. The club argue that despite Textor's shareholding, he has no say in the day-to-day running and has just 25 per cent of voting rights. Indeed, Textor has previously spoken about his annoyance at the lack of say he has at Palace and has been trying to sell his shares. Textor reiterated this after last week's meeting in Nyon. However, Nottingham Forest have written a letter to Uefa expressing their position and asking for clarification over whether Palace will be involved.

Trent Alexander-Arnold explains decision to change shirt name at Real Madrid

Trent Alexander-Arnold has explained why he has opted to change the name on the back of his shirt following his Real Madrid arrival. Alexander-Arnold, 26, was unveiled as a Galactico on Thursday afternoon, surprising fans as he gave his welcome speech in fluent Spanish. It's not the only surprise the ex-Liverpool right-back has dealt over the past couple days, with it yesterday being revealed that he would ditch his surname in favour of going by 'Trent' on the back of his shirt, accompanied by the number 12. Alexander-Arnold has revealed his thinking behind the name change, saying it was purely to avoid confusion rather than a personal rebrand. 'Quite an easy explanation,' he said at his press conference. 'I've always found when I travel to Europe that the whole name situation confuses a lot of people, as there being three names and double-barreled. 'People call me Arnold, people call me Alexander, people call me Alex, people call me Trent, there's a lot that goes on. So I thought let's make it easy, Trent on the back, and be known as Trent. That's my name so I guess that's what people will call me.' Alexander-Arnold added that his dilemma over his future was never a question of where to go, admitting he would only ever leave Liverpool for Real Madrid. 'I knew for a long time that I would only leave Liverpool for Real Madrid,' he said. 'No one else. It was never a question of: where do I go? It was always: do I go to Madrid or not? Making that decision wasn't easy.' He also clarified that by saying he had waited a long time to complete a move away from Liverpool, he didn't mean he'd been seeking a new club for 'years'. "To clear that up, by waiting a long time I mean a couple of weeks,' he added. 'Not years. "But I am very excited be here. Whether you support the club or not, you have to respect the trophies that the club win. No matter what, that has been always there for me. I have always admired players and clubs that win trophies." The 26-year-old arrives after 20 years at boyhood club Liverpool joining for a fee of £10m to ensure his participation at the Club World Cup. The right-back was expected to sign for free at the end of June after opting not to extend his contract at Anfield, an announcement which was made at the beginning of May. Alexander-Arnold was instrumental in Liverpool winning Europe's most prestigious trophy that year, and later added two Premier League titles, two Carabao Cups, an FA Cup and a Club World Cup to his accolade collection across 354 appearances. The Liverpudlian left his home side on imperfect terms, with his first appearance after announcing his departure seeing him booed by the Anfield faithful. However, as he collected his Premier League winners medal on the final day of the season, a teary-eyed Alexander-Arnold was met with cheers in what was heart-warming send-off.
