Rabi season paddy procurement set at 3.3 lakh MT
Rajamahendravaram: East Godavari District Joint Collector S Chinna Ramudu announced that the paddy procurement target for the Rabi 2024-25 season has been set at 3.30 lakh metric tonnes.
In a press release issued on Friday, he stated that by Friday, a total of 39,856 FTO (Farmer Transaction Order) coupons had been generated for procurement. So far, the district has procured 2,86,684.840 metric tonnes of paddy from 24,798 farmers. A sum of ₹550.26 crore has been credited to the bank accounts of 31,582 FTO beneficiaries. The moisture content of the paddy has been considered up to 17%. Around 62 lakh gunny bags have been used by farmers for paddy procurement. The government's minimum support price (MSP) for paddy is set at ₹2,300 per quintal for the common variety and ₹2,320 per quintal for the Grade A variety.
To ease the process for farmers during the scorching summer of the Rabi season, a facility has been provided for farmers to schedule their paddy procurement from home through WhatsApp number 7337359375. So far, 981 farmers have used this service to sell 12,817 metric tonnes of paddy. Additionally, 2,833 vehicles equipped with GPS devices are being used for the transportation of the procured paddy. Although the initial procurement target was 2.30 lakh metric tonnes, the target was revised upwards due to reports from agricultural officers indicating more paddy availability with farmers. The target was first increased by 30,000 metric tonnes and later by another 50,000 metric tonnes, resulting in the current target of 3.30 lakh metric tonnes. The JC said this increase has benefited an additional 3,302 farmers.

Auto retail sales rise 5% in May; PVs hit hard by border tensions
Automobile retail sales in India posted a modest 5 per cent year-on-year growth in May, led by two-wheeler, three-wheeler, and tractor sales growth triggered by the auspicious marriage season, a strong Rabi harvest, and pre-monsoon demand in rural markets, said monthly data by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (Fada) on Friday. However, passenger vehicle (PV) sales dipped 3 per cent to 302,214 units due to heightened war-related tensions. Border tensions in regions like Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat further prompted buyers to delay purchases. Entry-level models were hardest hit, as constrained financing and subdued consumer sentiment compounded the slowdown. During the month under review, the construction equipment segment witnessed a 6.3 per cent dip, and commercial vehicles (CVs) declined by 3.7 per cent. Fada estimates that global supply‐chain headwinds — from rare‐earth constraints in electric vehicle components to ongoing geopolitical tensions — may keep urban consumer sentiment in check in June. The segments that performed well include two-wheelers, which rose 7.3 per cent, three-wheelers with a 6.2 per cent increase, and tractors, which posted a rise of 2.7 per cent. 'In the 2W category, retail volumes fell 2.02 per cent month-on-month but still posted a robust 7.31 per cent year-on-year increase. Dealers attribute this resilience to a higher number of auspicious marriage days, a strong Rabi harvest, and pre-monsoon demand — especially in semi-urban and rural markets. That said, financing constraints in the economy segment capped full upside potential. Looking ahead, stakeholders should continue to monitor liquidity access and model availability to preserve momentum,' said C. S. Vigneshwar, President, Fada. Passenger vehicle retails contracted by 13.6 per cent month-on-month and 3.1 per cent year-on-year, while inventory days — which had hovered around 50 — have edged up to approximately 52–53 days. 'Although bookings remained fairly healthy, retail conversions lagged on margin-money challenges and deferred decisions. OEMs must adopt a cautious, ground-reality-aligned approach to production planning and channel incentives so that dealers are not burdened by rising carrying costs or forced into excessive discounting,' he added. Among the top five players, Maruti Suzuki witnessed a dip of 5 per cent to 1,16,899 units, Hyundai Motor around 16 per cent, and Tata Motors around 13 per cent decline in sales. However, Mahindra & Mahindra, which stormed to the number two place in recent times backed by its new launches, gained by 26 per cent during the month. Commercial vehicle retails declined by 11.25 per cent month-on-month and 3.71 per cent year-on-year amid muted freight cycles, tight liquidity, and adverse geopolitical sentiment. While bus sales offered some relief, passenger carriers and commodity-linked segments (cement, coal) saw sharp de-growth due to delayed financing and softening total industry volume (TIV). Wholesales, however, accelerated as OEMs and dealers built inventory ahead of the June 2025 mandatory air-conditioned driver-cabin regulation. The industry body predicts cautious optimism in its demand outlook for June. 'Monsoon‐driven rural traction and festival pull‐through should sustain 2W activity, yet persistent financing constraints and selective OEM price adjustments may temper incremental gains. PV dealers report elevated inventory days and legacy product portfolios, limiting retail conversions despite localised Rath Yatra uplifts. In the CV segment, inventory churn remains elevated as OEMs and dealers pre‐empt June '25 A/C‐cabin regulations, while freight demand in coal, cement, and mining continues to be muted by liquidity bottlenecks and early rains,' Vigneshwar added.

North India's cotton sowing area unlikely to recover after major drop
North India's cotton sowing acreage is unlikely to improve in the new season despite a steep fall in the sowing area last year. Trade sources said that cotton acreage may recover by around 25–30 per cent in Punjab, but the area under cotton may further decrease in Haryana and Rajasthan due to a scarcity of water for irrigation. Market experts noted that the assured returns from wheat and paddy, owing to government procurement, have discouraged cotton farming in the north Indian states. Around 60–70 per cent of cotton sowing was completed by the end of May in north India, according to market sources. The sowing work is expected to finish in the next one or two weeks. There are indications that farmers in Haryana and Rajasthan are facing an acute water crisis for irrigation. Cotton sowing in north India mostly depends on canal water, but both states are not receiving adequate supplies to meet the growing demand. Cotton sowing in north India is expected to remain subdued in the 2025â€'26 season, despite a sharp acreage decline last year. While Punjab may see a slight recovery, Haryana and Rajasthan face further reductions due to water scarcity and shifting preference towards wheat and paddy, which offer assured procurement. Total acreage may fall below 10 lakh hectares. Sources said that cotton sowing area in Punjab may increase by nearly 30 per cent to reach 1.25 lakh hectares in the 2025–26 season. However, sowing may decline by 20–25 per cent in Haryana and 25–30 per cent in Rajasthan. All three states recorded a sharp fall in cotton acreage last year, dropping to 10.955 lakh hectares, according to official figures. There are indications that north India's total cotton sowing area may decline further and fall below 10 lakh hectares in the new season. Sources noted that farmers in these states are opting for the safer option of paddy cultivation during the Kharif season, as the government remains committed to procuring paddy and wheat (during the Rabi season) at the minimum support price. The current procurement policy has disillusioned farmers from growing cotton. Historical cotton sowing data also supports this trend. North India's cotton sowing area was 15.620 lakh hectares in 2023–24, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. It declined to 10.955 lakh hectares in 2024–25. Punjab's cotton area reduced to 1 lakh hectare from 2.140 lakh hectares in 2023–24. The area dropped to 4.760 lakh hectares in Haryana and to 5.195 lakh hectares in Rajasthan, from 6.650 lakh hectares and 6.830 lakh hectares respectively. The Cotton Association of India (CAI) recently stated that north India's cotton output fell to 27.50 lakh bales (170 kg each) in the current season, down from 45.62 lakh bales last season. Production estimates for the current season are: Punjab – 1.50 lakh bales, Haryana – 7.80 lakh bales, upper Rajasthan – 9.60 lakh bales, and lower Rajasthan – 8.60 lakh bales. In comparison, last season's output were: Punjab – 3.65 lakh bales, Haryana – 13.30 lakh bales, upper Rajasthan – 15.47 lakh bales, and lower Rajasthan – 13.20 lakh bales.
