Burn belly fat fast: These surprising foods could trigger body's fat-melting power, says scientist

Time of India26-04-2025

Fat loss isn't easy to achieve and one of the most stubborn and harmful types is belly fat. Hidden deep inside, wrapped around the internal organs, it can fuel chronic inflammation and is linked to a range of serious health issues, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancers, and dementia.
The good news is there's a secret ally inside your body that can be activated to help destroy this dangerous fat.
Dr William Li
, the bestselling author of book Eat to Beat Your Diet talks about the many side effects of
visceral fat
, more popularly known as belly fat, and suggests a mechanism that can kill this fat.
Dr Li says the best way to burn this 'wiggly jiggly' (visceral) fat is by activating brown fat - a type of fat that burns calories to generate heat.
The expert says there is a small percentage of brown fat in the body found around our necks, under our breastbone, a little bit on shoulder blades and scattered in the belly a bit.

Brown fat, also known as
brown adipose tissue
(BAT) helps regulate body temperature, especially in cold conditions. It burns calories to generate heat, unlike white fat which primarily stores energy.
Dr Li suggests five foods that can help burn white fat by activating brown fat:
Apples
These wonderful fruits have chlorogenic acid inside their flesh, which turns on the brown fat and starts to burn down your white fat.
Apples have around 86% water and can be quite filling. They are fibre-rich and a low-calorie fruit. Enjoying the fruit can help manage blood sugar levels, heart health, and brain function.
Broccoli or Kale
These low-calorie and nutrient-dense veggies are a storehouse of phytochemicals called sulforaphane, which helps to
activate brown fat
cells.
Besides, broccoli and kale are full of antioxidants, and can help boost immunity and
reduce inflammation
in the body.
Bok Choy
Bok Choy or Chinese cabbage can be turned into a delicious preparation in just a few minutes. Cooking them in olive oil can help you get hydroxytyrosol and oleocanthal, both of which can activate brown fat.
According to studies, hydroxytyrosol can increase fatty acid oxidation, potentially boosting the body's ability to burn fat. It may help cut down inflammation and improve insulin sensitivity, which can aid in
weight loss
.
"You cut off the bottoms, you wash the leaves, take a wok or a skillet, a little extra virgin olive oil, a little garlic, [and] sauté that up," advises the expert.
By tapping into the body's natural fat-fighting systems, you can shrink belly fat and reclaim your health. Dr. Li's insights certainly offer a science-backed roadmap to a leaner, stronger you.

Action against pvt hosp for promoting free hysterectomy

Jaipur: The Union Ministry of Health has directed the state health department to take action against a private hospital in Udaipur for allegedly using a social media platform to encourage free hysterectomy. Officials said that the hospital's activities violated guidelines designed to discourage the unnecessary removal of the uterus for profit. The hospital produced reels for social media, thereby flouting the Centre's norms. The ministry's guidelines emphasised the importance of adhering to regulations that prevent hospitals from promoting surgical procedures for financial gain. "It has come to the notice of this directorate that this hospital is doing awareness generation by blog on free hysterectomy in their hospital. In this regard, it is informed that this directorate is working towards finalising guidelines to avoid unnecessary hysterectomy, and a committee was formed to finalise alternative treatment guidelines and develop awareness-generating materials to avoid unnecessary hysterectomy. However, the blog by the hospital is contradictory to these guidelines. Take strict necessary action against this hospital," Amita Bali Vohra, DDG, Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health, said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Has Toyota Done It Again? Sales of diabetes & cardiovascular drugs up 50% in Guj in two years

Ahmedabad: Gujarat is battling an uphill struggle with lifestyle diseases. Sales of drugs used to manage cardiovascular diseases and diabetes have shot up by at least 50% in the past two years, suggesting both a growing disease burden and increased patient compliance. According to data intelligence platform Pharmarack, the moving annual total (MAT) for cardiac therapy drugs stood at Rs 1,632 crore as of May 2025, marking a 44.4% rise from Rs 1,130 crore recorded in May 2023. The corresponding figure for anti-diabetic therapy rose even more sharply, increasing by 55.5% from Rs 688 crore to Rs 1,070 crore during the same period. MAT is a rolling calculation of sales value over the previous 12 months, and analysts say the consistent uptick highlights a worrying rise in non-communicable diseases driven by sedentary lifestyle, poor diets and mounting stress levels, particularly in urban areas. According to experts, while the surge in sales is partly due to higher detection and treatment adherence, it also reflects the underlying rise in incidence. Sheetal Sapale, vice-president-commercial, Pharmarack, said, "The rise in incidence is definitely seen, especially among the younger age group. People in their 30s and 40s are now being increasingly diagnosed with chronic conditions that were earlier associated with ageing populations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Nagelpilz-Innovation: Dieses Lasergerät ist ein Wunder Heilratgeber Weiterlesen Undo Poor lifestyle is the key culprit here. Moreover, with more young people succumbing to cardiovascular diseases, the awareness has also grown substantially, because of which early diagnosis is taking place. Obesity is another key factor responsible for the higher incidence of diabetes as well as cardiac ailments." Increased awareness, early diagnosis and improved access to care have also contributed to the jump in drug consumption. Several doctors say that more patients are now opting for continuous medication to manage conditions proactively, rather than waiting for complications to arise. Doctors, however, warn that dietary habits also need to change. "The Indian diet is predominantly carbohydrate-heavy and deficient in protein as well as fibre. There is a rise in the consumption of processed foods which are easily available through quick-commerce apps as well as food aggregators. Obesity in children is becoming increasingly common because of processed and sugary food being consumed by them. These invitations to conditions like diabetes and hypertension and other cardiac ailments," said Dr Manoj Vithalani, a physician and medical expert. Environmental pollution is also a key factor responsible for poor heart health, according to Dr Vithalani. City-based physicians said that lifestyle related diseases and conditions are on rise steadily primarily due to sedentary lifestyle, excessive screen consumption, outside foods and lack of exercise. The most common symptoms – which are often overlapping – include hypertension, diabetes, and obesity, they added. Dr Ramesh Goyal, a senior endocrinologist with Apollo Hospitals, said that there has been a rise in awareness about Type 2 diabetes and thus there will be relatively more patients than 2023. "Two specific classes of medications - SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists – are more acceptable by the practitioners and may have seen a rise in the overall mix. As diabetes is an overlapping condition, it is possible that the patients are also on other medications," he added.

How to pick the right avocado from the supermarket?

Grocery shopping might be a weekend therapy for some, but for others, it's a full-blown anxiety test. Not because the aisles are crowded, but because picking the right fruits and vegetables can feel like advanced-level adulting. One wrong squeeze and you've either got a rock-hard avocado or a mushy mess. And when it comes to avocados—there's no room for error. They're either perfect or a total disaster. Here's how to never lose the avocado gamble again. Color isn't everything—but it's a good start The first clue lies in the skin. For Hass avocados, which are the most common in stores, color is a helpful indicator of ripeness. Unripe Hass avocados are bright green. As they ripen, they darken into a deep, almost black shade. So if you need an avocado for today's guacamole, reach for the darker ones. However, not all varieties behave the same way. Fuerte, Bacon, and other green-skinned avocados stay green even when ripe. For these, color can be misleading, so you'll want to rely more on the next test: the squeeze. Firmness is the best indicator Gently squeeze the avocado with the palm of your hand—don't use your fingertips, as they can bruise the fruit. A ripe avocado should yield slightly to pressure without feeling mushy or soft. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo If it feels firm but not rock hard, it's likely perfect for slicing into salads or sandwiches. If it's very soft, it's best for mashing into guacamole. And if it doesn't budge at all? Give it a few days on the counter at room temperature to ripen naturally. Avoid avocados that feel overly squishy or have visible dents, soft spots, or broken skin. These are signs that the fruit is overripe or damaged inside. Stem test, weight, and skin check Still not sure? The stem trick can offer a final clue. Flick off the small nub at the top of the avocado. If it comes off easily and reveals green flesh underneath, you've got a ripe one. If it's brown underneath, the fruit is likely overripe. If the stem doesn't come off, the avocado is probably still unripe. Weight is another helpful factor. A ripe avocado should feel heavy for its size, which usually means it's full of creamy, usable flesh. Light ones might be dried out inside. Lastly, check the skin for blemishes, cracks, or deep indentations. Smooth, unblemished skin (even if it's a bit bumpy, like with Hass) is a good sign of a healthy avocado. If you're buying multiple avocados, don't pick all ripe ones unless you plan to use them immediately. Instead, choose a mix—some ready now, and others that will ripen in a few days. That way, you'll always have a perfect avocado on hand when you need it. One step to a healthier you—join Times Health+ Yoga and feel the change
