Walled City battles illegal construction crisis ahead of UNESCO anniversary
Jaipur: The iconic Walled City of Jaipur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, faces a growing crisis as illegal constructions threaten to erode its historic character. Local authorities are now racing against time to address this pressing issue before the fourth anniversary of its UNESCO designation on July 6.
A 2021 drone survey revealed more than 3,100 illegal structures within the protected area, prompting councillors to call for a fresh assessment of the situation. The matter gained urgent attention during the Jaipur Municipal Corporation-Heritage's recent General Body meeting, where Hawa Mahal MLA Balumukundacharya criticised officials for their alleged inaction.
"People have dug up the Walled City walls to reside inside, illegally accessing electricity and water connections.
As the corporation is responsible for heritage preservation, we are committed to taking strict action under heritage bylaws," mayor Kusum Yadav said.
The JMC-Heritage has already begun enforcement actions, with its vigilance wing removing over 35 unauthorised stalls from various locations including Chandpole, Choti Chaupar, Ramganj and Brahmpuri. Eight truckloads of seized items were confiscated during Monday's operation.
