Colombia retracts statement on Pak deaths after Shashi Tharoor's disapproval
Colombia has retracted its statement condoling the deaths in Pakistan during India's Operation Sindoor, and will issue a fresh one following Congress MP Shashi Tharoor's strong disapproval. The veteran, who is leading a multi-party delegation to five countries, pointed out the matter on Friday, saying that there is no moral equivalence between terrorists and those defending their nation.
advertisement"The Vice Minister very graciously mentioned that they have withdrawn the statement that we had expressed concern about, and that they fully understand our position on the matter which we really value," Tharoor told news agency ANI alongside Colombia's Vice Foreign Minister Ms Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio."We are very confident that with the explanation that we received today and the detailed information that we now have regarding the real situation, the conflict, and what happened in Kashmir, we can also continue the dialogue and be aware of what is happening," Villavicencio said.
Speaking to the media following Colombia's withdrawal, Tharoor repeated his stance on "no equivalence possible between terrorists on the one hand and innocent civilians on the other". He highlighted that India's only disappointment with the South American country's previous statement was that this very difference was "overlooked".advertisement"We're very pleased to learn that that statement has been withdrawn as you've also mentioned, and we are also very pleased that you, as representatives of the people of Colombia, are determined to stand with us for our sovereignty, for peace in the world, for peace in the subcontinent of India and that you are very, very happy that this kind of dialogue will continue between our peoples and our representatives," the Congress veteran told ANI.BJP leader Tejasvi Surya, who is part of the delegation led by Shashi Tharoor, also expressed joy in Colombia retracting its earlier statement. "There is a difference between tourists being killed and terrorists being neutralised. You cannot create an equivalence between the two...The Vice Minister as well as the authorities, saw merit in our arguments and were gracious enough to withdraw the statement that they had made earlier. They also expressed full sympathy and understanding with India's position," he told ANI.Shashi Tharoor has been sharing multiple updates of his five-country global outreach since heading to the same.On Friday after Colombia's earlier statement on Pakistan, the Congress veteran had highlighted that Operation Sindoor was a legitimate response after the Pahalgam massacre in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were shot dead point-blank by terrorists. The attack was claimed by The Resistance Front - a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) offshoot based in Pakistan. The Shashi Tharoor-led delegation is one of seven tasked by the Indian government with a global outreach mission to explain to 33 countries why India conducted Operation Sindoor. His delegation will also visit the US.Must Watch

‘Mamata stooped low to appease vote bank by opposing Operation Sindoor': Amit Shah
The home minister alleged that senior TMC leaders were complicit in the violence in Murshidabad in April, which broke out during protests over the contentious Waqf Amendment Act. 'The way a TMC minister incited the violence, it can be said that the Murshidabad riots were state-sponsored,' he claimed. 'The MHA kept on insisting about the deployment of BSF during the Murshidabad riots, but the TMC government didn't allow it to happen so that the violence could continue. If BSF personnel had been deployed, Hindus would have been protected. It was only after BJP workers approached the high court that the BSF was finally sent in,' he alleged. At least three people died and several others were injured in the April riots. This was Shah's first visit to West Bengal since the Murshidabad clashes. Sharpening his attack on Banerjee for the state of affairs under her rule, Shah said, 'Today, Mamata didi has turned this great land of Bengal land into a hub of infiltration, corruption, atrocities on women, crime, bomb blasts and mistreatment of Hindus.' Hitting out at the state government for obstructing national security efforts, he said, 'Mamata Banerjee is opposing the Waqf Amendment Act for appeasement politics.' The home minister also accused the ruling TMC of facilitating illegal cross-border movement. 'The Bengal elections will not only decide the future of the state, but it is also linked to the security of the country. Mamata Banerjee has left Bengal's borders open for Bangladeshis. Infiltration is taking place with her blessings. Only the BJP government can stop this,' he said. Responding to the TMC's criticism of the BSF's inability to stop infiltration, the senior BJP leader said the Mamata Banerjee-led government has not given the required land to the BSF. 'Once the TMC government gives BSF the required land, we will stop infiltration. But, it would never give land to the BSF, as the party wants infiltration to continue so that it can remain in power,' he claimed. Shah also accused Banerjee of failing to take a firm stand on issues of national security. 'During previous regimes in which Mamata didi was also a minister, no steps were taken to deal firmly with terror attacks. But our PM Narendra Modi took firm measures against terror attacks by destroying terror camps across the border. But, Mamata didi has a problem with it,' he said. 'For the sake of her vote bank, Mamata didi has crossed all limits of stooping low. A few days ago, Pakistan-backed terrorists killed our innocent citizens in front of their families after asking them about their religion. Operation Sindoor was carried out to punish these terrorists. The headquarters of the terrorists were destroyed by entering Pakistan. However, Mamata didi was pained over the death of these terrorists. She opposed Operation Sindoor by issuing a cheap political statement,' Shah said. He said that under Operation Sindoor, the central government conducted a deep strike 100 km into Pakistan, targeting terrorist headquarters. 'Numerous terrorists were killed, but this seems to trouble Mamata ji. By doing so, you are not only opposed to the mission, but also disregard the sentiments and emotions of the women of our country,' Shah said.

Over 69,000 Indian students hit hard as ICE targets OPT program with strict warning letters
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has begun sending warning letters to thousands of students enrolled in the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program, causing a wave of fear among foreign students in the US. The letters allege that they violated employment reporting regulations, which might result in the dismissal of their SEVIS records and possible deportation. Indian students, who make up the second-largest group of overseas students in the US, are greatly impacted by this administrative action. Nearly 69,000 of the 270,000 Indian students enrolled in the US during the 2022–2023 academic year participated in the Open Doors Program, according to the report. Administrative errors in submitting employment information have put these students on the verge of losing their legal status. The stringent application of current OPT unemployment regulations is at the core of the problem. Under OPT rules, foreign students may be jobless for up to ninety days throughout their twelve-month OPT tenure. STEM-OPT extension recipients receive an extra 60 days. They must update it on the SEVIS site within ten days when a student's occupation changes, whether it be through a new job, employment termination, or an alteration in location. 'The recent ICE letters indicate that a student's SEVIS record will be terminated if there is no employer information listed. This means the student either failed to report the OPT job on time or exceeded the allowed unemployment period,' Snehal Batra, an immigration lawyer with NPZ Law Group, told the TNN. Also Read: Dark tourism expert reveals chilling details amid Annabelle doll's vanishing rumours, 'We may be dealing with…' In the past, SEVIS records were not usually instantly canceled for such transgressions, Batra continued, but the present administration's stringent policies make it easier for students to lose their status. Earlier, SEVIS records were not generally instantly canceled for such violations; but the present administration's stringent policies make it easier for students to lose their status. Historically, the Designated School Officials (DSOs) were in charge of overseeing the accuracy of SEVIS reporting. However, 'ICE has been going in and terminating people who have accumulated more than 90 days of unemployment,' as per immigration attorney Jath Shao, who was cited by the TNN. While US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has restored student status after records were updated, he said that in certain cases, DSO delays resulted in the failure to update SEVIS.
