Crackdown on mobile signal blackspots across UK train journeys

Train passengers across Britain can anticipate an end to frustrating mobile signal blackspots and unreliable internet connections, as the Department for Transport (DfT) announces a significant initiative to boost connectivity on major routes.
The DfT confirmed that a landmark agreement has been signed between Government-owned Network Rail and telecoms companies Neos Networks and Freshwave, aiming to eliminate the long-standing issue of dropped calls and weak signals for commuters and travellers.
Named 'Project Reach', the initial phase will see Neos Networks install 1,000km (621 miles) of ultra-fast fibre optic cable along key arteries including parts of the East Coast Main Line, West Coast Main Line, Great Western Main Line, and Chiltern Main Line.
The DfT has expressed an ambition to expand this cabling network beyond 5,000km (3,107 miles) in the "near future".
Complementing this rollout, Freshwave will specifically target connectivity issues within 57 tunnels, covering nearly 50km (31 miles) of track.
This includes notorious blackspots such as the Chipping Sodbury tunnel near Bristol, promising a more seamless digital experience even in previously challenging areas.
As part of the deal, mobile network operators will also invest in new 4G and 5G infrastructure at these 12 railway stations: Birmingham New Street, Bristol Temple Meads, Edinburgh Waverley, Euston, Glasgow Central, King's Cross, Leeds, Liverpool Lime Street, Liverpool Street, Manchester Piccadilly, Paddington and Waterloo.
The DfT said the agreement 'brings together public and private sector investment and infrastructure', and is expected to save taxpayers 'around £300 million'.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: 'This is a game-changer for passengers up and down the country, and will revolutionise journeys from Paddington to Penzance and Edinburgh to Euston.
'By boosting connectivity and tackling signal blackspots, we are also ensuring a more reliable and efficient service.
'This means better journeys for passengers while supporting our broader plan for change goals of economic growth and digital innovation.'
The installation of infrastructure under Project Reach is expected to begin next year and be completed by 2028.

Business leaders last night rounded on the Prime Minister over his claim that he is backing them 'to the hilt' as grim figures laid bare the pressures firms face. Keir Starmer told bosses at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) conference in London that Labour had 'stabilised the economy' as he hailed his trade deals with the US and India. But his speech came amid gloomy economic data and rebellion among backbench MPs that threatened to derail Labour's fiscal plans. The Office for National Statistics yesterday revealed that 17 per cent of businesses have run out of cash – the worst figure since the pandemic. Separate figures from the Confederation of British Industry showed retail sales falling this month at the fastest pace since January 2024 – the ninth consecutive month of decline. And in a speech at the BCC following Starmer's appearance, Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey said firms across the country were slashing jobs and wages after Chancellor Rachel Reeves' National Insurance (NI) hike. Meanwhile, a leading economist warned that Starmer must face down Labour rebels by cutting welfare spending – or ministers will have to choose between a further tax raid or bond market turmoil. Starmer told the conference: 'We've stabilised the economy, and now we can go on to the next phase of government, building on that foundation, building a future of renewal that you can feel. 'And that means, of course, that we have to back you to the hilt – trust me, I'm fighting for you.' But Pimlico Plumbers founder Charlie Mullins said: 'I can't believe Starmer has the brass neck to stand in front of hundreds of struggling business owners and tell them he's on their side. It's only been a year and Labour's vicious NI hike and tax increases aimed at wealth creators have battered businesses.' Julian Jessop, economics fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs, said that 'very little has changed for the better' under Labour. 'Underlying economic growth remains sluggish, inflation is picking up again, the labour market is deteriorating, interest rates have fallen more slowly than elsewhere, and the public finances are as fragile as ever,' he said. 'Businesses are struggling under the weight of high energy prices and additional payroll costs, and many are nervous about the extra burdens that will be imposed by the Employment Rights Bill. Other than that, it is all going swimmingly.' Karl Mason, a spokesman for distillery trade group the UK Spirits Alliance, blasted Starmer's trade deal boast as a 'nonsense narrative'. 'The punishing tax burden we face at home makes it virtually impossible to invest in export growth. Without reform to our domestic tax regime, talk of trade deals is meaningless,' he said. Pound hits near four-year high The pound yesterday hit a near four-year high against the dollar amid speculation about Trump's plans to replace US Federal Reserve chief Jerome Powell. Sterling rose by a cent to just under $1.38 – the highest since October 2021 – in a boost to British holidaymakers preparing for the summer break. The dollar fell to its lowest level since early 2022 against many major currencies.

Waiting game for Shell and BP: If there must be a merger, it must be an all-British one, says ALEX BRUMMER

The concept of an enormous British oil and gas takeover takes us way back to the turn of the century. BP, then led by Lord Browne, swallowed American giants Amoco for $48.2billion in 1998 and Arco (Atlantic Richfield) for $26.8billion in 2000. A quarter of a century later and all the speculation centres on a Shell merger with BP to create a genuine great British energy champion – not the fake Great British Energy of Ed Miliband. Shell is doing its best to kibosh the notion of absorbing its long-time rival. Since Wael Sawan took the helm as chief executive of Shell in 2023 there has been an intense focus on oil and gas production, cash flows and returning funds to shareholders. Irrespective of the oil price, which has been on a roller-coaster ride, the group has managed $3billion of share buybacks for 14 quarters in a row. The group's market value has zipped up to £152billion and now dwarfs its old rival BP, which is worth a footling £58billion. It is the vulnerability of BP which has caused takeover talk to swirl around the historic explorer. In the last two decades, BP has had to navigate a series of crises dating back to the Texas City refinery fire in 2005 and the debilitating Deepwater Horizon explosion in 2010. Subsequently, it had to rapidly pull out of its investment in Russia gusher Rosneft after Vladimir Putin turned the might of the Kremlin on Ukraine. A torrid series of events left the group overloaded with debt. Further value was lost when the last chief executive Bernard Looney doubled down on a carbon neutral BP before being forced out when he misled the board over a priapic personal life. The transformation of BP from predator to preyed upon has taken a quarter of a century. The business has a rich history during which the Government has at times been an investor and BP has been a factor in the country's foreign policy. That engendered a special status in Whitehall and the City. Some 38pc of BP's share register is in the hands of UK long investors, which is a point of difference for most of the FTSE 100 where UK pension funds have been doing a disappearing act. It is BP's status and its dominant global presence in markets such as Indonesia, India and parts of Africa which makes it part of Britain's DNA. No British government, of any political colour, would want to see the prize disappear into the hands of American giants Exxon Mobil or Chevron – both are perceived as potential buyers. So it should come as no surprise that there have been sotto voce contacts with ministers and Whitehall as to what their response might be to an unwanted bid. Unsurprisingly, the answer is that the Government would rather see an all-British merger. Shell remains in London despite speculation it might leave for New York. The Government may be seen as hostile to fossil fuels, but the importance of both companies to UK jobs, exports, output, engineering, oil trading and growth is indisputable. They have also become big investors in green transformation, developing electric vehicle (EV) charging forecourts on the highways of Britain. Current BP chief executive Murray Auchincloss has set a course to restoring his company's status through disposals to reduce debt, cost reductions (which don't compromise safety) to improve cash flows and ambitious capital spending – too ambitious for key activist shareholder Elliott, which has built a 5pc holding. Auchincloss is in a race against the clock to restore value. It won't help if oil and gas prices, which stormed ahead in the 12-day war between Israel and Iran, remain subdued. Shell is out of the picture for six months under the terms of the takeover code, which gives Auchincloss some temporary breathing space. But the Anglo-Dutch group also has the option of coming back into the picture should BP request it do so. The experience of both companies with mega-billion takeovers is that they take years, if not decades, to fully integrate. Neither Shell chief executive Sawan nor BP boss Auchincloss particularly wants that distraction. Shell is the most likely safety net should BP tumble off the high wire.
