Hezbollah leader calls on government to work harder to end Israel's attacks on Lebanon
BEIRUT (AP) — The leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah group called on the government Monday to work harder to end Israel's attacks in the country a day after an Israeli airstrike hit a suburb of Beirut.
Naim Kassem said in a televised speech that Hezbollah implemented the
ceasefire deal
that ended the 14-month
Israel-Hezbollah war
in late November. But despite that, Israel is continuing with near-daily airstrikes.
Kassem's comments came as the Israeli military said it carried out more than 50 strikes in Lebanon this month saying they came after Hezbollah violated the U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
On Sunday, Israeli warplanes struck Beirut's southern suburbs after issuing a warning about an hour earlier, marking the third Israeli strike on the area since a ceasefire took effect in late November. The Israeli military said it struck a precision-guided missiles facility.
'The resistance complied 100% with the (ceasefire) deal and I tell state officials that it's your duty to guarantee protection,' Kassem said, adding that Lebanese officials should contact sponsors of the ceasefire so that they pressure Israel to cease its attacks.
'Put pressure on America and make it understand that Lebanon cannot rise if the aggression doesn't stop,' Kassem said, pointing to Lebanese officials. He added that the U.S. has interests in Lebanon and 'stability achieves these interests.'
Kassem said the priority should be for an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, an end to Israeli strikes in the country and the release of Lebanese held in Israel since the war that ended on Nov. 27.
Hezbollah began launching rockets, drones and missiles into Israel the day after the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel by its Hamas allies ignited the Israel-Hamas war. Palestinian militants killed about 1,200 people in Israel and abducted 251 others during the 2023 attack.
The Israel-Hezbollah conflict exploded into all-out war last September when Israel carried out waves of airstrikes and killed most of the militant group's senior leaders. The fighting killed over 4,000 people.
The Lebanese government said earlier this month that 190 people have been killed and 485 injured in Lebanon by Israeli strikes since the ceasefire took effect.

COUNCILLORS in Edinburgh will be taking a vote today on whether arms manufacturers should be allowed to use public parks in the city to test their equipment. The motion, brought by Green councillor Ben Parker aiming to prohibit the practice, was prompted by backlash last year over arms firm Leonardo testing equipment in the city's Braid Hills. Leonardo, which employs around 1800 people at its site near Crewe Toll, was given a licence to test communications equipment in the Braid Hills in December last year. Parker is now calling for such testing to be stopped – and calling for the council to "stand against the arms trade". "When news of testing in the Braid Hills emerged last year, the local community were clear in their opposition, and I hope councillors from all parties will see sense and make sure this kind of thing can never happen again in Edinburgh.' In a written deputation submitted in advance of the committee meeting, the Chair of the Friends of the Braid Hills Group, Elaine Le Geyt-Anderson, said: 'As chair of Friends of the Braid Hills I have stated clearly to the Council, as stakeholders, that we strongly oppose the use of Edinburgh Greenspaces, gifted to the people of Edinburgh, to be used in this way by a company which manufactures components which kill children and bomb hospitals. "It is unbearable to watch news on our televisions seeing children maimed and orphaned by equipment manufactured in Edinburgh and now tested on the Braid Hills. "This testing includes using the Braid Hills as a 6km line of sight from the Leonardo lab in Crewe Toll for its targeting systems.' She added: 'The new Park Management Rules must reflect a clear decision never to give permission to any arms manufacturer for the testing of components or equipment on the Braid Hills or any other of Edinburgh's beautiful Greenspaces which were gifted to the city for our enjoyment and wellbeing.'

Israel announces defense export record: $15 billion in 2024
JERUSALEM — Israel's defense export reached $14.79 billion in 2024, setting a new record at a 13% increase over the previous year, Israel's Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday. European countries were the main recipients, receiving 54% of the Israeli defense export, compared to 35% in 2023, according to data presented by the government. Asia and the Pacific Region followed with 23% of Israeli defense exports in 2024, Abraham Accords countries with 12%, North America with 9%, and Latin America and Africa 1% each. The category of missiles, rockets and air defense systems accounted for 48% of exports, up from 36% in 2023. Satellite and space systems exports saw a leap towards 8% of 2024 deals compared to 2% in 2023. Vehicles and armored personnel carriers accounted for 9% of Israel's defense export in 2024, manned aircraft and avionics for 8%, observation and optronics for 6%, intelligence, information and cyber systems for 4%, ammunition and armaments for 3%, weapon stations and launchers for 2%, C4I and communication systems for another 2%, drones and UAVs for 1%, and maritime systems and platforms for additional 1%. The announcement comes amid the Defense Ministry's directive to Israeli defense companies throughout the ongoing Israel-Gaza war to prioritize supplying the Israel Defense Forces' needs over other customers. The three largest Israeli defense companies are Israel Aerospace Industries, Elbit Systems and Rafael. The companies reported record results for 2024 alongside record order backlogs, which stood at $25 billion, $22.6 billion and $17.7 billion, respectively. Israel's Defense Ministry Director General, Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Baram said: 'We must expand Israel's defense production base to ensure continuous and sustained security readiness, even during challenging periods, while enabling greater export capacity. We will work to expand existing markets, break into new markets, and better leverage Israel's unique defense-tech ecosystem.'

At least five people, including a 1-year-old child, his mother and grandmother, were killed Thursday in a nighttime Russian drone strike that hit the northern Ukrainian city of Pryluky, officials said.
