I visit Swensen's Unlimited's new concept, and now I'm contemplating holding my wedding here, Lifestyle News

AsiaOne28-05-2025

For the past few months, I have been hunting for a venue to hold my wedding ceremony.
I had considered numerous hotels and up until recently, it never occurred to me to hold the occasion in a restaurant.
So the opening of Swensen Unlimited's new flagship destination on May 14 at Singapore Science Park's Geneo, which AsiaOne attended, was pretty timely.
On regular days, the space, which is a short walk from Kent Ridge MRT, operates as a Swensen's Unlimited restaurant, which is an international buffet concept by the popular chain eatery.
But when booked for a special occasion — whether it be a wedding, baby shower or corporate function — it transforms into an event venue called The Acacia Geneo.
I fell in love with the interior at first sight. The brightly lit space had soft, earthy tones thanks to the wood and rattan furnishings.
At the centre of the space was a large LED backdrop, which can be customised to your liking.
There is also a private room with a bathroom that can be transformed into a bridal suite, workshop suite, prayer room or private lounge — whatever you need for your event.
The Acacia Geneo can seat 200 guests, and thanks to the versatile layout and modular furniture, things can easily be moved around to suit your theme.
I could easily visualise how the place could be transformed into a wedding venue with some decor.
Swensen's doesn't just provide the venue — it also provides an all-in-one event package which simplifies the preparation and planning process.
This includes a selection of pre-curated thematic decor options for guests to choose a look that best suits their occasion.
As The Acacia Geneo also collaborates with a network of preferred partners, one can engage professional event services such as bridal styling, live band performances and emcee hosting.
Prices start from $18,000 for an event with 200 pax and you can top up accordingly if you plan on inviting more guests. Stuff your face silly
What I really like about the concept is guests can help themselves to the Swensen's Unlimited buffet spread, which is the heart of every event you hold at The Acacia Geneo.
Many of my loved ones grew up eating at Swensen's too, so it adds a nice nostalgic touch to the occasion.
While the food offerings are mostly similar to what you can find at the Swensen's Unlimited VivoCity and Changi Airport Terminal 2 branches, there are some outlet-exclusive dishes as well.
One is Ayam Masak Merah , which features tender chicken in a rich, aromatic tomato-chili gravy.
Those who love the numbing feeling of mala will enjoy the crispy Mala Firecracker Chicken. This was extremely addictive and I couldn't stop reaching out for more.
There's also the Mala Stir-fry Pot, which features chicken, potato, black fungus, shiitake mushrooms, Chinese cabbage, peanuts and sesame seeds. It clearly was a hot favourite amongst diners because the pan kept getting wiped clean when we were there.
For desserts, something you won't be able to find at the VivoCity and Changi Airport Terminal 2 branches is the viral pistachio kunafa spread. I slathered this everywhere and the best part was that it was free-flow.
Apart from the outlet-exclusive items, diners can look forward to Swensen's classics like BBQ Chicken and Curry Chicken Baked Rice and Beef Pepperoni & Cheese Pizza.
At the live carving station, there are roast meats fresh from the oven like Roast Leg of Lamb, Roast Chicken and Roast Angus Beef Ribeye. You can also grab some sticks of a la minute chicken and mutton satay skewers, which are displayed right in front of the carving station.
If you're feeling pasta, you can do-it-yourself (DIY) it to your preference and have it prepared for you right before your eyes. I loved the carbonara duck pasta and even went back for seconds.
You can't leave a Swensen's without indulging in their desserts and similar to the other outlets, the spread at the Kent Ridge outlet is a feast to behold.
I was left spoilt for choice by the 48 different ice cream and gelato flavours, and eventually settled for the Sticky Chewy Chocolate and Red Velvet.
There are also DIY dessert stations where diners can craft their own sundaes, banana splits and chendols.
Planning to book The Acacia Geneo for your next event? The first 10 bookings will enjoy 20 per cent off the bill before GST, so fastest fingers first.

Put their logo and priced it 10 times higher: Netizens upset exact copy of Enhypen's merch available cheaply on Taobao, Entertainment News

K-pop boy group Enhypen's new merchandise line is going viral but not for the right reasons. Among the items sold in their Walk the Line in Japan - Summer Edition merchandise is a water gun, and fans quickly discovered that the design looks a little too familiar. In a post that has garnered close to three million views and over 19,000 reposts on X, a user compared a photo of the water gun to a listing on the Chinese e-commerce platform Taobao. The water gun on the latter is identical in design down to the colours and costs 16.8 yuan (S$3), while Enhypen's is going for 30,450 won (S$29). "It's really not good to take something that sells for 3,000 won on Taobao and sell it for 30,000 won with only a logo on it," said the user who shared the post on X. Netizens took to the quotes section to express their distaste for the situation. 아니…….좀 성의있게 다른 디자인으로 바꿔서 팔든가 타오바오에서 3천원에 파는거 그대로 가져와서 로고만 박고 3만원에 파는거 진짜별로다 — LUCKY 곰방와 (@g_mvely) June 9, 2025 "I want to boycott all the goods and albums of the agencies and make them come to their senses," said one angry netizen. Another remarked: "If it were me, I would buy it from Taobao, draw the Enhypen logo on it, and use it as if it were official goods." A few others also felt the one on Taobao looks "cuter". A quick look at the Weverse website shows that the item is no longer listed. Enhypen debuted in 2020 with seven members: Heeseung, Jake, Sunghoon, Sunoo, Jungwon, Jay and Niki. Labubu doll fetches 1.08 million yuan at China auction as demand rages

[BEIJING] A human-sized Labubu doll fetched a whopping 1.08 million yuan (S$193,341) at an auction in Beijing, in a testament to the popularity of the collectible toy flaunted by celebrities. The one-of-a-kind mint green Labubu, a monster character created by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung, went under the hammer at China's Yongle Auction house on Tuesday (Jun 10), along with 47 other Labubu collectible items. Another limited-edition brown Labubu was sold for 820,000 yuan, taking the total value of the sales to 3.73 million yuan, according to a local media report. The so-called world first auction of Labubu artwork attracted thousands of buyers on site and online, the report said. Pop Mart International Group, the Beijing-based maker of the toothy monster dolls, has seen its shares surge more than 180 per cent this year amid the craze for its soft toys seen carried by the likes of Rihanna and BlackPink's Lisa. Labubu fans are known to brave long queues and often ready to pay inflated prices to get their favourite toy. A Chinese bank recently used Labubu as free gifts to lure depositors, prompting the regulator to step in and ban such practices. Infant buyer The youngest registered buyer at Tuesday's auction was a nine-month infant, whose family bought a co-branded version of Labubu doll for 32,000 yuan in the baby's name, according to the report. The popularity of the toy has led brokerages to raise Pop Mart's price target. Deutsche Bank boosted its target for Pop Mart shares by 52 per cent to HK$303 (S$50), citing strong overseas growth momentum. Morgan Stanley lifted its target to HK$302 from HK$224, saying it should be valued at a similar level to Sanrio and Walt Disney. THE MONSTERS blind-box series, with Labubu at its centre, generated more than 3 billion yuan in sales for Pop Mart last year, accounting for almost one-fourth of the company's revenue. BLOOMBERG

Taiwan's Christine Fan competes in reality show Singer 2025, gets eliminated in first round

Singer Christine Fan has openly expressed her disappointment with her performance of The First Dream (2004) on Chinese reality music competition Singer 2025. PHOTO: FANFAN/INSTAGRAM Taiwan's Christine Fan competes in reality show Singer 2025, gets eliminated in first round American-born Taiwanese singer Christine Fan made a short-lived appearance as a contestant on Singer 2025 – the Chinese reality music competition broadcast on Hunan Television – before getting eliminated in the same episode. The show, which premiered on May 16, features an international line-up of professional singers, including Chen Chusheng from China, Beni from Japan and Mickey Guyton from the US. Three winners will be named at the end of the season. Singer 2025 was formerly known as I Am A Singer, which premiered in 2013 and was renamed in 2017. This is the 10th season of the show, and voting results are determined by both in-person audience members as well as internet users. Fan, better known by her stage name FanFan, was brought in to replace Taiwanese singer Terry Lin, 58, who was eliminated after the fourth episode, which aired on June 6. Fan came in last among eight singers, ranking below those from China, such as Ma Jiaqi, Shan Yichun and Gai. Fan, 49, sang her hit track The First Dream (2004), but was off-key and suffered from shaky vocals. She reportedly cried as soon as she got off the stage. Netizens compared her performance to a 'car accident scene', with viewers adding she was not confident and appeared nervous. In an Instagram post on June 7, Fan said she was thankful and satisfied to have participated in Singer 2025. She expressed her disappointment openly, writing that 'it has been many years since I have participated in the recording of such shows, and I am upset with my subpar performance'. 'I have failed to meet the expectations of viewers, and I am deeply sorry for that.' However, the singer r emains positive, saying that one need not excel every day, and that life will turn out fine as long as one bravely works towards accomplishing his or her dreams. She also wrapped up her caption by thanking the show's crew, as well as her colleagues, friends, family members and the team behind Singer 2025 who cheered her on. Fan's latest album, Solitary Moment, was released in 2022. Since her music debut in 2000, she has staged several concert tours, with the most recent being her On Road To Happiness world tour (2017 to 2019), during which she made stops in cities like Taipei, Los Angeles and Singapore. She is married to Taiwanese television host Blackie Chen, 48, and the couple have nine-year-old twin sons. Chen was embroiled in Taiwan's #MeToo scandal in 2023, after being accused by Taiwanese actress Tina Chou for a sexual harassment incident that took place in 2012. Chen and Fan have denied the allegations. In 2023, the couple filed a NT$10 million (S$430,000) lawsuit against Chou to 'restore the reputation of the parties concerned', bu t ended up dropping it.
