Jockey Michael O'Sullivan won the hearts of the Irish people, funeral hears

Independent19-02-2025

Jockey Michael O' Sullivan won the hearts of the Irish people, his funeral has heard.
The 24-year-old Cheltenham Festival-winning rider, from Co Cork, died in hospital on Sunday from injuries he suffered in a fall at Thurles Racecourse in Co Tipperary earlier in the month.
Hundreds of mourners gathered amid pouring rain at John the Baptist Church in Glantane, in Co Cork, on Wednesday for requiem mass.
Priest Fr Gerard Coleman told the service that O'Sullivan lived life to the full, and packed more into his 24 years than most people do in two lifetimes.
He said he had maturity beyond his years, and a 'tremendous understanding'.
'He understood his horses and that's why he was such a great rider,' said the priest.
'But he also understood people and that is why he made a lasting impression on everyone and won the hearts of the Irish people.
'Everyone loved him. He was an incredibly talented and dedicated sportsman and will never be forgotten.'
The jockey was riding the horse Wee Charlie, for trainer Gerard O'Leary, when he sustained the fatal injuries. He was one of three fallers at the final fence in a two-mile handicap chase at Thurles on February 6.
The rest of the meeting was abandoned as the air ambulance arrived to take O'Sullivan to hospital.
He was treated in the intensive care unit at Cork University Hospital, where he died in the early hours of Sunday surrounded by his parents Bernie and William, brother Alan, partner Charlotte and extended family.
O'Sullivan shot to prominence on the opening day of the 2023 Cheltenham Festival, headlined by his Supreme Novices' Hurdle win on Marine Nationale, just months after turning professional.
His funeral began with a eulogy from his father. He thanked all the emergency services who had treated his son and also praised the community for the support offered to the family.
'While we are broken hearted, we will now focus on what Michael would want for us,' he said.
'He would want us to mend over time, he would want us to support Alan in his life choices and find joy in his achievements.
'He would want us to find joy in the achievements of his cousins and friends and his many weighing room colleagues. May you all stay safe.
'Michael will forever be in our hearts and minds.'
After the funeral, O'Sullivan's coffin was taken onward for burial at St John's Cemetery.

Odsonne Edouard to Celtic transfer return given thumbs up but one major stumbling block cited

French Eddy has been deemed surplus to requirements at FA Cup-winning Crystal Palace Scott Allan insists Celtic shouldn't think twice if an opportunity arises to re-sign Odsonne Edouard. Brendan Rodgers has already brought returning heroes Kieran Tierney and Jota back to Parkhead after stints elsewhere. ‌ Edouard, 27, flopped on loan at Leicester City and has no future at Crystal Palace as he enters the final year of his deal. ‌ The former PSG striker - who swapped Celtic Park for Selhurst Park in a £14million transfer four years ago - was prolific in Glasgow. Rodgers even labelled the Frenchman as one of the best young players he had worked with after shelling out a then-club record £9m to turn his season-long loan into a permanent deal in 2018. And when asked if he should be on Celtic's radar this summer, Allan told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard: "I would, yeah. Fantastic player. It's obviously a position that Celtic will be looking to add to. "I think we might see Daizen Maeda go back out to that wide area, where he was so effective in terms of his pressing and getting up and down the pitch. "He'll be looking to add to his goal tally come next season. I think there's no question that it's an area of the park where Celtic need to strengthen." ‌ A potential stumbling block could be Edouard's lucrative salary at the Eagles, something Allan believes could be a deal breaker. The ex-Hoops midfielder said: "I think the problem with the boys that are playing in the Premier League is that there's now the chance to go to the Saudi League where they can earn ridiculous amounts of money. "The Kieran Tierney one is completely different because he's a huge Celtic fan and he's been dying to get back home and probably feels like he's got unfinished business at Celtic. ‌ "So it'll be interesting but I do feel that Celtic will be looking to find the next Odsonne Edouard where they can get a tune from them and then make money from them." Eddie Hearn calls on Stormont to back ‘iconic' Lewis Crocker v Paddy Donovan rematch at Windsor Park

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has asked the Stormont Executive to help create 'an iconic moment' in Northern Irish sporting history by supporting the bid to stage the rematch between Belfast's Lewis Crocker and Limerick's Paddy Donovan at Windsor Park. The Belfast Telegraph revealed yesterday that talks to host the bout at the famous Belfast football ground were at an advanced stage, with Sports Minister Gordon Lyons involved in discussions. Hearn has urged the Stormont Executive to provide support for the event, which is pencilled in for mid-September. 'I can tell you that Windsor Park is definitely not on at this moment, but there are conversations that are taking place,' Hearn said. 'My message to the Government is let's bring a sporting event to Belfast that has huge significance. 'Let's create an atmosphere and an occasion that everyone can get behind. Let's put on a card full of Irish talent. 'Because there is nothing like an outdoor event in boxing. If that fight gets made for the world welterweight title, it's an iconic moment for sport in Northern Ireland, and all of Ireland.' The Matchroom promoter, who represents both fighters, is also confident that the IBF welterweight world title will be on the line with reigning champion Jaron 'Boots' Ennis expected to vacate the belt and move up to super-welterweight. The addition of the world title will add extra heat to an already spicy event. At the SSE Arena in March, Sandy Row boxer Crocker was awarded the victory after Donovan was disqualified for throwing a punch after the bell. Hearn told IFL TV: 'If Boots moves up to 154lb which has definite potential to happen, then Lewis Crocker will fight Paddy Donovan for the world welterweight title in Ireland, which will be one of the biggest events the country has seen for a long time. 'The winner of that bout will put themselves in a position to fight the biggest names in the sport. We will have to see what happens, but I'd love to do it outdoors.' Crocker's manager Jamie Conlan also wants to see the fight staged at Windsor Park. He said: 'We are still working on Windsor. We are committed to try and bring a fight of this magnitude to Windsor Park. I believe that this is a bigger fight than the SSE Arena, especially if we get the world title over the line. This is a fight that should be on a bigger stage, and a bigger stage as in an outdoor arena or outdoor venue. 'We have two dates pencilled in with the SSE Arena. There was a fantastic atmosphere there in March. 'It was like a cauldron, like it always is there. No doubt it would be another fantastic night, but I just think the two best fighters in the country potentially fighting for a world title should be in a big outdoor arena. 'Windsor is a stone's throw from Lewis' house. It's where he's watched Linfield and where he's seen Northern Ireland play. To headline there, in front of a home crowd, in a fight of this magnitude would be a dream come true for him.' The head of Conlan Boxing believes the fight would be one of the biggest nights in Irish boxing history. He told Irish Boxing: 'If this is for a world title, it's the biggest all-Irish fight ever. We've had big domestic fights, but this is a legitimate world title on the line between two undefeated fighters at the peak of their powers.' In the first fight, billed as a final eliminator to face Ennis, Donovan was ahead on the scorecards when he was adjudged to have punched Crocker after the bell to end the eighth round. Donovan thought he was victorious but referee Marcus McDonnell disqualified him, declaring Crocker the winner, which led to chaotic scenes in the ring. Donovan's team successfully appealed the disqualification with the IBF ordering an immediate rematch, though Conlan had stated a rematch was always on the agenda at his fighter's request. March's fight was marred by a mass brawl in the stands at the SSE Arena. The Belfast Telegraph contacted the PSNI about the possibility of the rematch being staged at Windsor Park, but they did not want to comment before the event was confirmed.

Saba Desert catches the eye with winning start at Sandown

The Godolphin-owned and bred colt is by Dubawi and out of Finespun, a daughter of Luca Cumani's Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Gossamer. Godolphin and Appleby chose the same race as a career starting point for Native Trail in 2021, who went on to win two Group Ones by the end of his two-year-old year and was the Irish 2,000 Guineas winner the following term. Now then … 👀 Dubawi colt 𝐒𝐚𝐛𝐚 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐭 makes a most impressive racecourse debut @Sandownpark 🔥 A certain Native Trail won this in 2021 for @godolphin 🔵🔵🔵 — Racing TV (@RacingTV) June 13, 2025 Those are big shoes to fill, but under William Buick the 4-7 favourite looked potentially nice in prevailing by three-quarters of a length to get his own juvenile campaign under way. 'It was important to get some cover on him and do everything as you'd want to first time out,' Buick said. 'He's a very fast horse, with a good attitude and a good mind in everything he does. I was very pleased with what he did there. 'He's got plenty of pace. When you ask him, he's there for you. He's a very talented colt.' Rising Power also made a winning start in the British EBF Novice Stakes, to give Godolphin, Appleby and Buick a double. The Wootton Bassett colt was sent off as the 1-2 favourite over a bare-minimum five-furlong trip. Rising Power kick-started a Godolphin double (Adam Davy/PA) He found an adversary in Rod Millman's 2-1 chance Killavia, but after the two locked horns it was Rising Power who took a three-quarter-length verdict. 'He was very gutsy. It was a little bit harder work than I probably would have liked or expected, but he's a horse that probably wants six furlongs now, or even seven,' Buick told Racing TV. 'He ran against some speedy types there and showed his quality, that's always good to have, he battled on and kept responding the whole way. 'He's not the biggest horse, but he's got a big heart.'
