Knights superstar Kalyn Ponga linked with shock $2m NRL defection

Knights superstar Kalyn Ponga is reportedly being targeted by overseas rugby union franchises, who are plotting an audacious bid to recruit the gun fullback.
According to Code Sports, French and English rugby clubs have reportedly made inquiries to garner Ponga's potential interest in making a switch to the 15-man code.

The 27-year-old is currently contracted until the end of the 2027 season, with the threat of a poaching road by the Perth Bears also lingering for Knights powerbrokers.
However, his reported $1.4 million Newcastle salary could be overshadowed by the potential $2 million deals on offer in European rugby.
Ponga was born in Port Hedland, Western Australia, but has consistently been linked with rugby after spending his high school years playing for Churchie's First XV.
He has also made no secret of his desire to one day represent the All Blacks, which a move to rugby could kickstart should he wish to follow that path.
Ponga also reportedly is passionate about the Knights and the Maroons, who he will represent in the No. 1 jersey in Game 2 of the 2025 Origin series on Wednesday.
'Yes, there's been some interest in Kalyn from rugby clubs overseas,' Ponga's father Andre said.
'We've had a few parties calling us saying there's interest, but I try not to listen to managers and other people.
'The interest is from overseas rugby, but it's not a conversation we are worrying about right now.
'There has been talk about Kalyn going overseas at the end of 2027, but Kalyn is staying patient and seeing where the Knights are.
'He doesn't want to be rushed into a decision two years out.
'There's still a lot of time ahead for him. I am always one to say to him, 'See what your options are and then you can make a considered decision about your future'.'
The next Rugby World Cup takes place in 2027, the same year his contract with the Knights expires, meaning it would be unlikely he could feature in that tournament.
Andre Ponga, meanwhile, said he wouldn't push his son to make a switch to the 15-man code.
'To be honest, I would probably encourage him not to go to rugby, but I will always support what Kalyn wants to do, rather than telling him what he should do,' he said.
'There are two more franchises coming into the NRL over the next few years.
'He is coming off-contract at the right time to know what the next phase of his career is going to look like.
'There will be a new salary cap in 2027-28 and they say these are the golden years Kalyn is coming into.'

Daniel Stackhouse strikes in first ride back from European holiday with Hello Romeo at Sandown

Booting home a winner is always the best way for a jockey to announce their return to the riding ranks. Group 1-winning rider Daniel Stackhouse made the best possible statement with a win on Hello Romeo at his first ride for five weeks in the 2YO Handicap (1000m). Stackhouse decided to turn a friend's wedding in London into a dream holiday, taking in six countries, while releasing him from the tough daily grind jockeys face year-on-year. 'We went to London, Croatia, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Dubai,' Stackhouse said. 'We just had a wedding in London so I thought we'd make a holiday of it as I haven't had a holiday for a while. 'It has refreshed the mind and the body so I've come back in the middle of winter to start again. 'It was a good way to start at the first meeting back. I just wanted to get back into the rhythm but it was good to ride a winner at my first ride back.' Stackhouse wasted no time in getting to the pointy end of his first ride back, pushing the recently gelded Hello Romeo ($5) forward to race near the lead early in the $150,000 race. Hello Romeo just holds on in the first at Sandown! 😮â€ðŸ'¨ @lindsayparkrace @DanielStack33 â€' 7HorseRacing ðŸŽ (@7horseracing) June 14, 2025 Hello Romeo found plenty in the last 200m to withstand the challenge of the Phillip Stokes-trained first-starter Street Legal ($7) to post his second win in five starts by a head. Co-trainer Will Hayes said Hello Romeo had been competitive as a colt, including when beaten three lengths in a rich race in New Zealand in January, but had a bright future ahead of him as a gelding. 'He's an absolute professional mentally and the international trip to New Zealand, he really coped well with it as a colt but between that prep and this prep, he's had the ultimate gear change,' Hayes, who trains Hello Romeo in partnership with his brothers Ben and JD, said. 'Today was just a good display and a terrific ride from Dan. 'He showed initiative from the wide gate and made his intentions very clear when he got outside the lead. 'He was really strong through the line so there's plenty of upside with him this preparation.' Stackhouse said he would continue to take rides in the heavier weight range for the immediate future before working his weight down in the lead-up to the spring carnival. 'If you don't ride, it's hard to knuckle down so I'll keep riding and riding heavy so it (weight) will keep coming down,' Stackhouse said. 'I'll stay around 58 (kg) for the next couple of weeks.'
