Greenpeace Joins Anti-Bezos Protest With Venice Banner Complaining About Billionaire Tax Breaks

Greenpeace joined the protests in Venice against the upcoming wedding of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez on Monday.
A half-dozen protesters unfurled a giant banner early Monday in St. Mark's Square reading: 'IF YOU CAN RENT VENICE FOR YOUR WEDDING YOU CAN PAY MORE TAX.' Local police quickly folded it up and took it away. The demonstration followed other anti-Bezos initiatives last week, including a banner draped from the San Giorgio bell tower, one from the lagoon city's famous Rialto Bridge, and posters plastered up around town complaining about the upcoming wedding and the effects of overtourism on Venice.
The 'No Space for Bezos' movement–a play on words also referring to the bride's recent space flight–has united a dozen Venetian organizations, including housing advocates, anti-cruise ship campaigners, and university groups. Activists argue the wedding exemplifies broader failures in municipal governance, particularly the prioritization of tourism over resident needs.
Greenpeace said it teamed with the British group 'Everyone Hates Elon,' which has smashed Teslas to protest Elon Musk, for Monday's banner. Greenpeace said it wanted to draw attention to the comparatively low taxes many billionaires pay while allegedly exacerbating the climate crisis with environmentally unsustainable lifestyles.
Italian and Venetian officials have strongly criticized the protests and welcomed the Bezos-Sanchez nuptials, which are scheduled for later this week. Over the weekend, as the protests continued to make headlines in Italy, a Venetian environmental research association, Corila, said Bezos' Earth Fund was supporting its work with an 'important donation.' Corila, which unites university scholars and Italy's main national research council in researching Venetian protection strategies, wouldn't say how much Bezos was donating but noted contacts began in April, well before the protests started.

Prada's Brand CEO Gianfranco D'Attis to Quit

Prada's brand CEO Gianfranco D'Attis will leave the Italian luxury firm at the end of the month by "mutual agreement", Prada said on Sunday. Prada Group's CEO Andrea Guerra will take on the role of brand CEO on an interim basis, the company told Reuters. The news was first reported by fashion trade publication WWD. Luxury fashion has seen several changes in senior leadership and creative directors. Luxury goods giant Kering, which owns Gucci, last week named Renault boss Luca de Meo as its new CEO, replacing Francois-Henri Pinault, who has led the heavily indebted family firm since 2005. Top luxury houses are also betting on a new design direction to help rekindle interest from shoppers, who have pulled back on fashion as prices rise. Earlier in June, LVMH-owned Dior appointed its menswear designer, Jonathan Anderson, to also head womenswear designs and haute couture, replacing Maria Grazia Chiuri. Kering in May appointed former Valentino designer Pierpaolo Piccioli as creative director of Balenciaga, replacing Demna, who was taking up the chief design job at Gucci. Designer changes have also taken place at Chanel, Versace, Valentino and LVMH-owned Celine among others.

Starmer and Zelenskiy Meet in London, Agree Military Production Project

Volodymyr Zelenskiy and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a new defense co-production initiative on Monday during a short visit by the Ukrainian president to London to discuss his country's defense against Russia. The two leaders announced the deal in the garden of Starmer's Downing Street residence, where they also met Ukrainian troops being trained in Britain. "I'm really proud that this afternoon, we're able to announce an industrial military co-production agreement - the first of its kind so far as Ukraine and the UK are concerned - which will be a massive step forward now in the contribution that we can continue to make," Starmer said. He did not provide further details on the agreement. Zelenskiy said it would help strengthen both nations. Speaking alongside Starmer, the Ukrainian president thanked Britain for its support in the war against Russia, Reuters reported. Zelenskiy had earlier met King Charles at Windsor Castle where the two shook hands for cameras on what was their third meeting this year and the latest gesture of Charles', and Britain's, support for Ukraine. The Ukrainian leader also met the speakers of both houses of parliament.

F1 owner Liberty Media finally set to seal deal to take control of MotoGP after European approval

Formula 1 owner Liberty Media is finally set to complete a deal to take control of motorcycle racing series MotoGP after receiving approval from the European Commission. Liberty Media said Monday the unconditional approval was the last step in completing the deal to buy 84 percent of Spain-based MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports. 'MotoGP is a highly attractive premium sports asset with incredible racing, a passionate fanbase and a strong cash flow profile,' Liberty Media president and CEO Greg Maffei said in a statement. 'We believe the sport and brand have significant growth potential, which we will look to realize through deepening the connection with the core fan base and expanding to a wider global audience.' Liberty said the deal, which was first announced in April 2024, could go through by July 3. The process was held up in December when the European Commission opened what it called an 'in-depth investigation' into whether the agreement would hike the cost of broadcast rights for motorsports events. Dorna chief executive Carmelo Ezpeleta remains in charge of MotoGP, but Liberty said he will be joined on the Dorna board by Chase Carey and Sean Bratches, two veterans of Liberty's takeover of F1 in 2017. They were part of its efforts to grow and modernize F1 as a business, especially in the US.
