Zohran Mamdani turns New York City mayoral race into Bollywood blockbuster

When Zohran Kwame Mamdani announced his candidacy for New York City mayor last October, he was seen as a long shot. But an affordability-centred messaging and social media-driven campaign sprinkled with Bollywood tadka has propelled the 33-year-old assemblyman to the forefront of the Democratic primary to Ugandan academic Mahmood Mamdani and acclaimed Indian-American filmmaker Mira Nair, Zohran Mamdani has leaned into his South Asian heritage and captured the attention of younger, immigrant, and working-class New Yorkers with his populist platform and savvy use of Hindi film week, Mamdani dropped a campaign video on X peppered with classic Bollywood film scenes and music. Speaking in Hindi, he explains the voting process, makes the case for affordability, and takes aim at his main rival: former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who is backed by US President Donald Trump. A democratic socialist, Mamdani framed the race as a choice between a people-powered movement and billionaire-backed 2-minute, 23-second video features the iconic scene from Deewar, where Amitabh Bachchan's character Vijay boasts, "Aaj mere paas buildingein hain, property hai, bangla hai, bank balance hai, gaadi hai. Tumhare paas kya hai? (Today I have buildings, property, a bungalow, a bank balance, and a car. What do you have?)."A beat later, Mamdani appears on screen, arms spread in Shah Rukh Khan's signature pose, responding simply: "Aap" (I have the people).Billionaires ke paas already sab kuchh hai. Ab, aapka time already have everything. Now, your time has come. Zohran Kwame Mamdani (@ZohranKMamdani) June 4, 2025advertisementThe message is clear: Mamdani is positioning himself as the candidate of the people, against Cuomo, whom he portrays as emblematic of elite privilege and establishment explain New York's ranked choice voting system, Mamdani borrows Kishore Kumar's voice from Karz and uses glasses of lassi as props: "Hey, have you ever voted for anyone? Have you ever ranked anyone?"This is not your typical New York City mayoral has fused desi pop culture with policy to communicate a progressive vision: free city buses, controlling apartment rents, city-run grocery stores, and a $10 billion tax hike on the ultra-wealthy to pay for it all.'We can guarantee cheaper groceries, we can raise the minimum wage, we can freeze the rent for more than 2 million tenants, and build more than 200,000 affordable homes. We are done settling for less,' he declares in another ad—rooted in the spirit of Roti, Kapda aur Makaan, the 1974 Bachchan-starrer that named the three most basic human ad starts airing are done settling for less. Zohran Kwame Mamdani (@ZohranKMamdani) June 11, 2025With a short-lived career as a hip-hop artist, Mamdani now calls himself the Kendrick Lamar of affordability—intent on sticking to a message that speaks to working-class ke paas already sab kuchh hai. Ab, aapka time aageya (Billionaires already have everything. Now, your time has come)," he says in his video, a callback to the rap anthem from Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt-starrer Gully Mamdani's rise has not come without controversy. His vocal criticism of Israel and advocacy for Palestinian rights have earned him a fair share of has also been branded anti-Hindu for calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a "war criminal" with reference to the latter's alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat riots. PM Modi was given a clean chit by a Supreme Court-appointed probe."Narendra Modi helped to orchestrate what was a mass slaughter of Muslims in Gujarat to the extent that [people] don't even believe there are Gujarat Muslims anymore," Mamdani recently said at a forum. "This is someone we should view in the same manner we do Benjamin Netanyahu. This is a war criminal."His Muslim heritage has also drawn vitriol, but Mamdani has turned the attacks into campaign fodder."When you're the first Muslim elected official to run for mayor, people say some pretty wild things," he quipped in a New York City—America's largest metropolis—grappling with a cost-of-living crisis, housing shortages, transit issues, and deep inequality, the next mayor faces enormous challenges. Mamdani, powered by Bollywood swagger and socialist fire, has cast himself as the underdog hero standing up for the little guy.

She confessed that she was a huge fan of SRK and always in awe of him. But she felt he was rude to her on the sets of Rakesh Roshan 's 'Koyla'. Eventually, she thanked him for it because it only helped her perform better and be more dedicated to her work. The actress recalled in an interview with Instant Bollywood, "When Rakesh ji cast me in Koyla, I was all mad for Shah Rukh after watching DDLJ. When Shah Rukh came on the set, my first scene with him was when I had to die in his arms. So, Rakesh ji said, let's do a silent shot first and he was impressed with me because I knew my mark and everything. Acting hi karle nayi ladki, but mujhe mark pataa tha, sab pataa tha. So, when SRK entered and he was smoking, Rakesh ji said, 'You met Deepshikha,' so he said, 'Hi. '. Then Rakesh ji said, "Deepshikha is very good." Shah Rukh said while smoking his cigerrette with attitude, "Ya let's see." Deepshikha further said, "Joh mera ego hurt hua hai. He was so rude. I said, ab toh main karke dikhaungi. I still can smell his aura, aroma. And then after the shot, I went and sat quietly. We became friends later and then we use to share the same umbrella during rains and all. But after that incident, I used to just concentrate on my work and be dedicated. May be he saw that and recommended my name then for 'Badshah'." Shah Rukh also clarified about this instance with her. She said, "Later when I spoke about him being rude in an interview, he told me, "'No Deepshika. I like my space so I also like giving space to people.' But then I told him, 'Thank you Shah Rukh, for saying, 'Lets see'. So, I could just perform better or else I might have not even been there in 'Koyla'. And then he liked my work so much and recommended me to Ratan ji (Producer Ratan Jain) for Baadshah. " However, SRK never told about it to her. "Ratan ji ne mujhe picture hone ke baad bataya ke Shah Rukh ne mera naam recommend kiya tha. Shah Rukh ne kabhi bola bhi nahi. Yeh uska badappan hai. After that 1-2 films, I couldn't talk to him as I was always in awe of him." Then they became good friends and Deepshikha revaled that SRK even invited her home. "He also told me, 'Come home', but I never went because I used to feel small. I wish I had gone. But now I'm manifesting that I'm going to work with Shah Rukh and Salman very soon again."

Govinda's wife Sunita Ahuja CLAIMS he spent more time with co-stars than her, reveals struggles of being married to him

Bollywood actor Govinda ruled the 90s era with his impeccable performance and delivered several hits. He made a special place in the hearts of the audiences and has a huge fan base even today. Well, all that glitter is not gold. The lives of actors seem very glittery but even they and their families face many difficulties from their profession. Now, Govinda's wife Sunita Ahuja, who is known for speaking her heart out without any fear of judgment, opened up on struggles of being married to him and claimed that he spent most time with co-stars. Yes, you heard that right! In a recent conversation with Instant Bollywood, Sunita Ahuja shared, 'Ek hero ki biwi hona, aapko patthar ka dil banana padta hai. Aap dekhte ho hero humare se zyada to heroine logo ke saath rehte hain.' (Being the wife of a film star, you have to have a heart of stone. You see them spending more time with their heroines than with us). Govinda's wife also talked about trust in a relationship and admitted that having no trust in a partner will ruin one's life. She highlighted how crucial it is not to let insecurities take over, especially in a long marriage. Pointing to the value of commitment and perspective, she questioned how one could sustain a relationship for 30 to 40 years without focusing on the bigger picture and the shared journey, rather than getting caught up in doubt. Sunita also opened up about the time when she embraced motherhood and revealed that the actor wasn't present with her. She shared he was mostly away for shoots during her delivery of both their children Tina and Yashvardhan. Sunita Ahuja added that she was staying with her mother-in-law at that time as she couldn't travel with their little ones. She also gave credit for her understanding of family to Govinda's mother and she shaped her thoughts while staying together. She proudly shared that the actor had a deep love for his mother, driven by fear and that he never did anything wrong in his life. Meanwhile, Govinda tied the knot with Sunita Ahuja in 1987. The duo are proud parents to two children Tina Ahuja and Yashvardhan Ahuja. Tina made her acting debut in 2015 with Second Hand Husband. Meanwhile, Harshvardhan will soon be making his acting debut with Sai Rajesh's directorial. He has assisted in films like Dishoom, Baaghi, and Salman Khan's upcoming film Kick 2.
