Peggy Whitson, Ph.D., America's most experienced astronaut, will serve as the Axiom Mission 4 commander. She has spent 675 days in space and previously commanded the Axiom Mission 2, making her the world's most flight-experienced woman astronaut. With over 38 years in space and science, she now serves as Axiom Space's director of human spaceflight and has held numerous leadership roles at NASA, including chief of the Astronaut Office and two-time ISS commander, according to Axiom Space.
Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, a decorated Indian Air Force pilot and selected astronaut for India's Gaganyaan mission, will serve as the pilot for Axiom Mission 4 to the International Space Station. With over 2,000 flight hours and extensive training in Russia, Shukla represents a significant milestone in India's return to human spaceflight, according to Axiom Space.
Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski, a Polish scientist and engineer, was selected for the ESA Astronaut Reserve Class of 2022 and will serve as a mission specialist on Axiom Mission 4. With a strong academic background in radiation-tolerant space systems and experience leading operations at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, he brings extensive expertise and a passion for exploration to the mission, according to Axiom Space.
Tibor Kapu, a mechanical engineer from Hungary, was selected as a mission specialist for Axiom Mission 4 after emerging as one of four finalists in the prestigious HUNOR Astronaut Program. With a background in polymer technology and space radiation protection, Kapu brings technical expertise and a spirit of exploration to Hungary's historic return to human spaceflight, according to Axiom Space.
NASA is supporting the mission by offering training and resources, while SpaceX is handling the launch with its Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon spacecraft.

Whitson, a veteran astronaut and two-time commander of the International Space Station, is on her way back to the orbital outpost for her fifth-ever stint. The cosmic voyage, coming seven years after her retirement from NASA, is her second with Axiom Space – a commercial spaceflight company based in Houston, Texas. The expedition, known as Axiom Mission 4, got off the ground in the early hours of Wednesday, June 25, following the launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center near Cape Canaveral, Florida. Now that the Dragon capsule Whitson and her crew is aboard has separated from the rocket, the spacecraft will spend the next day completing a trip to the space station. In the meantime, here's everything to know about Peggy Whitson and her storied career as both a government and now private astronaut. Whitson, 65, is leading a crew of spacefarers selected for the latest Axiom Space mission to the International Space Station. Under Whitson's command are pilot Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and two mission specialists: Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski of Poland, who is part of the European Space Agency's reserve astronaut class, and Tibor Kapu, a mechanical engineer from Hungary. This mission marks the first government-sponsored spaceflight in more than 40 years for India, Poland and Hungary. Shukla, Uznański-Wiśniewski and Kapu would also be the first spacefarers from each nation to ever reach the orbital laboratory. When they reach the station, the astronauts of Ax-4 are due to spend about 14 days conducting scientific experiments in microgravity on behalf of organizations around the world. Born in Iowa, Whitson was selected in 1996 to begin training as a NASA astronaut. She retired from NASA in 2018 before embarking on another spaceflight career in the private sector. After joining Axiom Space as the company's director of human spaceflight, Whitson became the first female commander of a commercial space mission in 2023 following the launch of Ax-2. Coming more than two years after her most recent spaceflight, the Axiom Mission 4 venture represents Whitson's fifth-ever trip to the International Space Station. Whitson's first three spaceflight missions were as a NASA astronaut, beginning with Expedition 5 in 2002. Whitson served as a flight engineer during the six-month mission from June to December at the orbital outpost, during which she and two Russian cosmonauts conducted research into how microgravity affects plants and the human body. In October 2007, Whitson returned to the space station for Expedition 16 – this time as the mission commander. During the six-month rotation, Whitson helped conduct various research and also oversaw the first expansion of the station's living and working space in more than six years. Whitson's final trip to space before retiring from NASA came in 2016, when she served as commander once again for Expedition 50. The lengthy voyage lasted 289 days and stretched into Expedition 51 and Expedition 52, during which time Whitson contributed to hundreds of scientific experiments. In the course of her spacefaring career, Whitson has accumulated a number of accolades and records for NASA. Only four NASA astronauts have spent more consecutive days in space than Whitson following her 289-day voyage between 2016 and 2017. Whitson's long-duration spaceflight, in fact, was just three days longer than that of Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams – the NASA astronauts who recently made headlines when their voyage aboard the Boeing Starliner led to an unexpected extended 286-day mission at the ISS. But to this day, no American astronaut has spent more days in space overall than the cumulative 675 days Whitson has lived among the stars since 2002. Earlier in 2025, Suni Williams surpassed Whitson's record for the most total time any woman has spent on spacewalks. After completing the ninth spacewalk of her career in late January, Williams has now spent 62 hours and 6 minutes suited up in the vacuum of space. Williams' recent spacewalk, often referred to as extra-vehicular activity in space agency parlance, broke Whitson's record of 60 hours and 21 minutes set in 2017. SpaceX launches Axiom Space crew from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida
A rocket launch lit up the night sky on the Space Coast as it sent a crew of four astronauts to orbit aboard a brand new SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. After multiple delays ranging from rocket issues to a leak on the International Space Station, the Axiom Space Mission 4 was finally off the ground. The crew had been in quarantine ahead of launch since May 25. The liftoff finally came at 2:31 a.m. June 25 from NASA's Kennedy Space Center pad 39A. The Falcon 9 rocket's first stage, also known as the booster, came in for a landing at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, creating a sonic boom heard throughout Brevard. Commanding this mission is former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, a record-breaking space flier. She called the launch in the new spacecraft an "incredible ride uphill." This mission is Whitson's second with Axiom Space. Upon reaching orbit, the name of the latest SpaceX Dragon capsule, the final addition to the fleet, was revealed to be Grace. During a media briefing earlier this month, the crew had teased that the name would be related to their zero-gravity indicator — a plush swan. "Grace is more than a name. It reflects the elegance at which we move through space against the backdrop of Earth," Whitson said. "Grace reminds us that spaceflight is not just a feat of engineering, but an act of goodwill." Joining Whitson are first-time fliers Shubhanshu Shukla from India, Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski from Poland, and Tibor Kapu from Hungary. The mission brings a return to human spaceflight for these three countries, as in over 40 years the countries have not seen a government-sponsored astronaut. When is the next Florida launch? Is there a launch today? Upcoming SpaceX, Axiom, ULA rocket launch schedule at Cape Canaveral It was the fourth astronaut mission for Axiom Space, which is working to build one of the many private space stations planned in the next decade after the ISS is deorbited. The crew is expected to reach the ISS no earlier than 7 a.m. June 26. The four will spend two weeks onboard the space station where they will oversee 60 science experiments. These experiments include a project which will investigate glucose monitoring and insulin onboard the ISS. Depending on results, findings could make it possible for individuals with diabetes to fly in space. Currently, those with diabetes are disqualified due to medical unknowns. Another test by Booz Allen Hamilton, a technology company, will oversee biometric readings on a crew member using the Oura Ring. This project looks at analyzing and storing readings such as sleep quality and heart rate. Other experiments will look at cancer growth, how the space environment impacts human perception, as well as plant nutrition and growth in space. Once the mission is complete, the crew will splash down off the coast of California, where SpaceX recently moved its Dragon recovery operations. First Indian, Hungarian and Polish astronauts on their way to the ISS
For the first time an Indian, a Hungarian and a Pole have been launched into space for a stay on the International Space Station (ISS). Together with former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, the three took off aboard a Crew Dragon capsule on a Falcon 9 rocket on Wednesday, as shown by live images. The rocket, built by Elon Musk's SpaceX company, took off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The Ax-4 mission was postponed several times due to technical problems with the rocket and the ISS. This is the fourth commercial space mission for Houston-based Axiom Space, in collaboration with the US space agency NASA and SpaceX. The Crew Dragon is expected to dock with the ISS on Thursday. While Whitson has been in space several times, this is the first space flight for the three amateur astronauts. Shubhanshu Shukla from India works for his country's air force, while Tibor Kapu from Hungary and Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland are engineers. They would be the first people from India, Poland and Hungary on board the ISS. People from all three countries have already been in space, first with Russian Soyuz missions in the 1970s and 1980s. The crew of the Ax-4 mission is scheduled to spend around two weeks on board the ISS, where they will take part in numerous scientific experiments. According to media reports, such a flight costs around $80 million per passenger. In 2022, the company Axiom organized the first private mission to the ISS, followed by others in 2023 and 2024.
