Fortnite's foul-mouthed AI Darth Vader angers fans and SAG-AFTRA

Euronews20-05-2025

Online video game platform Fortnite has added an AI-powered Darth Vader NPC to the game, one which uses the voice of late actor James Earl Jones. And the reaction has been far from positive.
'Strategise with the ultimate Sith Lord. With your voice. And he'll respond back using conversational AI,' reads a statement from Epic Games. 'Darth Vader has touched down once again as a boss in Battle Royale. Ask him all your pressing questions about the Force, the Galactic Empire… or you know, a good strat for the last Storm circle. The Sith Lord has opinions.'
Epic Games added that Darth Vader 'wouldn't be nearly as sinister without the legendary performance of James Earl Jones,' who voiced Vader in the Star Wars films.
They also shared a statement from Jones' family: 'James Earl felt that the voice of Darth Vader was inseparable from the story of Star Wars, and he always wanted fans of all ages to continue to experience it. We hope that this collaboration with Fortnite will allow both longtime fans of Darth Vader and newer generations to share in the enjoyment of this iconic character.'
But fans aren't having any of it.
'It doesn't matter if the family thinks it's cool or not, it's still disturbing to use a dead man's voice for your kid's shooter,' wrote one fan on Reddit.
Another queried: 'Do you really think resurrecting dead people for monetary profit is going to stop here, especially with Disney?', while a fan added: 'I will not partake in the act of Digital Necromancy and I will openly judge everyone who does. Shame on you all.'
Problematically - and depressing in its predictability - as soon as Darth Vader was added into the game, players were getting the character to say the word 'fuck' and use homophobic slurs.
'This is really disappointing. I wasn't a big fan of a Star Wars season but throwing AI into the mix is absolutely butchering any excitement I might have had for the future of Fortnite. I hope this feature leaves and never comes back,' wrote a player on Reddit.
Adding to the backlash is Hollywood's actors' union, who have filed an unfair labor practice charge against Llama Productions on Monday, alleging the company replaced actors' work by using artificial intelligence to generate Darth Vader's voice in Fortnite without notice.
The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists said Llama Productions, a subsidiary of gaming giant Epic Games, 'failed and refused to bargain in good faith with the union' in the last six months. The company made unilateral changes to the terms and conditions of employment 'without providing notice to the union or the opportunity to bargain' by using AI-generated voices to replace bargaining unit work, SAG-AFTRA said.
In a statement, SAG-AFTRA said the union supports the rights of members and their estates to control the use of their digital replicas.
'However, we must protect our right to bargain terms and conditions around uses of voice that replace the work of our members, including those who previously did the work of matching Darth Vader's iconic rhythm and tone in video games,' the union said.

Gaming fans bring electric energy to Rotterdam as TwitchCon arrives

The Dutch city is hosting TwitchCon this weekend -- the annual event run by United States streaming giant Twitch -- where fans can meet their favourite creators and join the celebrations. "I started during the lockdown and I just really like to put on the live stream while I'm working on cosplays or other things," said Larissa, a 24-year-old Dutch woman, who came to meet the creator of the fantasy characters that inspire her. This is Larissa's second TwitchCon, and for the occasion, she is dressed as a half-cyborg, half-minotaur creature with green skin and bright red eyes. "I've been meeting a lot of cool people here, especially when you're in cosplay. People recognize the cosplay and are like, oh, that's the same series I really like. So then you have also something to talk about already." Electric energy Like Larissa, thousands of fans from across Europe turned out to meet their favourite creators and watch live e-sports events including Fortnite and Elden Ring, staged by Twitch celebrities. "Most of the work that happens on Twitch is online, it's digital," said Mary Kish, a marketing director at Twitch. "You're streaming with other people, you're hanging out with your community for many hours a week. "What happens at TwitchCon is the culmination of all of that goodwill and all of that joy in person at a con, and the energy is electric," said the 39-year-old, who is from the United States. French streamers JL Tomy and Etoiles -- who have 1.3 million and 1.2 million followers -- were also among those in attendance. "It's fun because there are lots of other partner streamers who are like me," said JL Tomy, 28, whose real name is Toma Abdellaoui. "I'm very much a homebody," said the streamer, whose content focuses on GTA, Valorant, League of Legends and e-sports competitions. Acquired by Amazon in 2014 for roughly $842 million, Twitch is the world's leading streaming platform for gaming, with more than 2.5 million hourly viewers on average. While gaming remains core to Twitch since its 2011 debut, the platform has broadened its reach, drawing in entertainment, sports and political figures, as well as livestreaming other major events. Kish said that Twitch's "Just Chatting" category is now its largest non-gaming segment. "There is a massive variety of other people doing other things. Like food and drink, where people are cooking... people who are showing their aquariums in their houses," Kish said. Reflecting that diversity, visitors attended theatre workshops, built Lego models, or watched the annual Drag Queen show, a TwitchCon staple. TwitchCon's next North American edition is scheduled for October 17–19, 2025, in San Diego.

Kevin Costner sued over unscripted rape scene in 'Horizon'

A stunt performer on the film Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 is suing actor / director Kevin Costner, alleging that she was forced to perform an unscripted rape scene without proper protocols. Devyn LaBella was the lead stunt double for Ella Hunt, who played the role of Juliette in the Horizon films - Costner's self-funded westerns. According to LaBella's lawsuit, Costner improvised a scene in 2023, in which Hunt's character would be raped. Hunt refused to perform the scene, the lawsuit states. LaBella was brought in as a stand-in, without advance warning and without an intimacy coordinator present. The lawsuit states that LaBella never gave consent for this scene, and that it was an open set, meaning anyone could walk in and 'observe the scene being performed'. According to the complaint, LaBella was humiliated and traumatized by the experience. 'On that day, I was left exposed, unprotected, and deeply betrayed by a system that promised safety and professionalism,' LaBella said in a statement. 'What happened to me shattered my trust and forever changed how I move through this industry.' The suit alleges that the scene violated protocols negotiated by SAG-AFTRA, including a requirement for 48 hours' notice and consent for any scenes involving nudity or simulated sex. 'This case is a clear example of male-dominated, sexist Hollywood movie production,' said Kate McFarlane, one of the plaintiffs' attorneys. 'Our client was subjected to brutal sexual conduct completely unprotected from the obvious harm.' Costner denied the allegations through his attorney, Marty Singer. In a statement, Singer said that Costner 'always wants to make sure that everyone is comfortable working on his films and takes safety on set very seriously.' He added: 'However, this claim by Devyn LaBella has absolutely no merit, and it is completely contradicted by her own actions – and the facts." Singer called LaBella a 'serial accuser' and that she uses 'shakedown tactics'. He also claims 'she approved the scene in question after rehearsing with another actor, by giving a 'thumbs up'. Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 was released in June 2024 to mixed reviews. Chapter 2 was originally was removed from its original theatrical release date in August 2024 due to the first film's poor performance at the box office.
