Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar established his international reputation with 'raucous farces' such as What Have I Done to Deserve This? And Women On the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, writes Robert Chalmers in the Observer Magazine on 5 June 1994. His new film, Kika, features a porn star, a lesbian maid, a serial killer and a rape scene played as 'knockabout comedy', begging the question: has the clown prince of Europe lost his sense of humour, both in his life and in his art?
Holding court in his Madrid headquarters, the 42-year-old is 'listless, withdrawn and miserable'. Reviews for Kika in Spain and France are poor. He has a bad toothache. The state of his nation is also causing him pain. 'The economic position is bad,' offers Almodóvar. 'The social situation is bad. People are more afraid. I think the 90s have taken us all by surprise.' The early 80s were different. Back then, 'Spain was the most liberated country in the world.'
The director's 'vulgar frivolity', says Chalmers, had free rein. Now, says Almódovar, censorship abounds, with 'Anglo-Saxons' key offenders.
Former associates from La Movida, the post-Franco countercultural movement, say fame is the auteur's undoing. Painter Guillermo Pérez Villalta blames the 1980s: they 'screwed up a lot of things. It was one of the most horrendous periods. 'Almodóvar, who was a wonderful person, has become almost unbearable. Fame devours you.'
For Almodóvar, self-doubt does not ail him. This evidently makes Chalmers uneasy. Calling on the director's knowledge of fin de siècle figures such as Oscar Wilde and Audrey Beardsley, he asks the Spanish enfant terrible if he might yet 'undergo an 11th-hour conversion and leave his friends a testament that ended with the instruction: Destroy all the bad pictures?'
The answer is: no. 'I reaffirm everything I have done… If I had my life again, I would live it in the same way.' The director pauses 'for one final provocation', says Chalmers, before adding: 'The same, but more.'

He made his first senior appearances on loan at Crewe Alexandra in League Two during the 2022/23 season and also spent time in Austria with Sturm Graz. The talented shot-stopper then joined Wrexham on loan from Arsenal in September 2023 and impressed as Phil Parkinson's side secured automatic promotion from the fourth tier. Okonkwo then signed permanently for the North Wales outfit, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney last summer. The 23-year-old was a key part of the team that achieved a third successive promotion from League One in April, recording 19 clean sheets during the 2024/25 campaign. However, current Arsenal No. 1 Raya has now cautioned over the difficulty of playing in the Championship after describing it as being tougher for keepers than even the Premier League. The Spanish international knows those challenges only too well after starring in the second tier with Blackburn Rovers and Brentford. Raya discussed the mental and physical tests while appearing on the Fozcast podcast, hosted by ex-Wrexham and Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster. "It's so much different [playing in the Championship] and you get kicked everywhere," he said. "Every throw-in is going into the six-yard box, with eight or nine monsters just going straight into you. Obviously in the Premier League there are more quality players but when it gets to physicality, there's a lot more games [in the Championship] as well. Foster, who played for Wrexham over two spells and helped them win the National League title in 2023, backed Raya's frank assessment of playing in the Championship. The former England international said: "I totally agree. I think, as a goalkeeper, playing in the Championship is harder than playing in the Premier League. You need to have more about you. You've got to be physically stronger and physicality comes into it a lot more in the Championship. Gary Neville has been left stunned by Liverpool raking in £10million for Trent Alexander-Arnold - despite the full-back only having one month remaining on his contract. Real Madrid announced the signing of the full-back ahead of the transfer window opening. Alexander-Arnold, 26, heads to the Spanish capital to link up with Los Blancos in time for the beginning of the Club World Cup. Real have been keen to secure his signature early, and saw an approach to the Reds turned down in January. Though, he can understand the thought process the Club World Cup hopefuls went through. "Honestly, no, I mean, I'm stunned by that really, that £10m has changed hands for, but there is £100m pounds at stake in this World Club Championship and Real Madrid have got a great chance of doing it," he said on the It's Called Soccer podcast on the US Overlap channel. "So you imagine if he plays in this tournament, they haven't got a right back that's playing there naturally at this moment in time. So it could be money well spent in four or five weeks. "I just find it crazy that you're spending £10m to have a player for five, six games. It's incredible." Neville has been impressed with Liverpool's work so far this summer. The Reds have signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and look set to add Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez to their ranks too. He said: "I think when you're talking about winning the league, what is it that improves you? I mean, the only thing that's going to improve you when you win the league is signing world-class players, or players that have got the potential to be world-class players. So signing Wirtz is fantastic. "Frimpong and then there's talk of Kerkez as well, deals with their right and left-back situations. So to get those three done, if they were to get those three done quite quickly, would be smart business. But I wouldn't have expected anything else from Liverpool. "Maybe slightly surprised that they've gone so heavy on Wirtz in terms of the fee. They don't normally go that big, but Slot deserves it, by the way. He waited 12 months for a player to sign." 'I'm the King of Benidorm - Brits make the same huge mistake when they visit'
Frank 'The Stag Man' has seen it all when it comes to hens and stags, and he's got some words of advice for those looking to party in the Spanish coastal town of Benidorm A man known as the 'King of Benidorm ' who has hosted countless hen and stag parties in the notorious party town has revealed the biggest blunders "legless" Brits make when they visit. Frank 'The Stag Man', as he is popularly known online, originally hails from Tottenham but long ago made the Spanish coastal town his home after attending a stag do himself. Nowadays, the 54-year-old is happily wedded to Jade, who is hailed as Benidorm's 'most legendary stripper'. However, this doesn't deter him from throwing an unforgettable bash for other prospective brides and grooms. After 14 years of non-stop partying, Frank has one key insight: Not everyone can handle what Benidorm throws at them. "The biggest mistake I've seen brides – and especially grooms – make is when it comes to drinking," the travel agent and bar owner shared with Luxury Travel Daily. "The measures here are very different to the UK and Ireland. "They're knocking back the drinks in Brit mode, like they're at a beer garden on a Sunday afternoon watching the footy. And before they know it, they're legless. The measures here are very generous, with a double vodka typically filling half a pint glass and a splash of mixer." Frank has also witnessed his fair share of soon-to-be married individuals missing out on the party entirely. He continued: "They just don't know their limits. It leads to them injuring themselves or causing a disturbance. "And then the morning after, they're too hungover to continue and end up missing out. It makes me sad, as I always think that they've wasted so much money travelling to Spain doing something they could've done at home. At least lying in bed the next day wouldn't matter then." Frank further advised against organising a group stay through disreputable websites. He warned: "These websites don't often state on the booking that groups aren't allowed. It's not just the trouble people will cause, it's the fact that these businesses don't want half their hotel booked out for just a few days, when they could've had multiple guests stay for a week. "I've heard it too many times: 'Oh we've been refused at our hotel' or 'We've been kicked out with nowhere to stay'. It's just not worth it. Look at a reputable agent who can do all the legwork for you. Otherwise you'll be spending your send-off to married life sleeping on the streets." Frank, famed for accommodating 200 hen and stag dos in a single day, also warned not to take country portrayals on TV too literally, even if he concedes "what happens in Benidorm, stays in Benidorm". Yet, Frank urges revellers to keep in mind there are rules to respect. He said: "If you're down the beach with the lads – or ladies – don't try to outsmart the police. For example, drinking on the beach is a complete no-go. "You'll be slapped with a hefty fine. And don't go there for any late-night swims, as they'll charge you for that, too." Frank offers another crucial tip: always have cash on hand in case your card is declined. He also warns holidaymakers using chip and pin to keep their wits about them – there are bar staff who've cheekily bumped up the bill or charged British patrons twice.
