Sabrina Ionescu out with neck injury as Liberty will be down three starters versus Storm

SEATTLE — The Liberty's starting lineup took another hit Sunday.
Sabrina Ionescu was ruled out for Sunday's game against the Storm because of neck tightness, coach Sandy Brondello said pregame.

Ionescu experienced some neck tightness after the team's cross-country flight Friday.
She broke away toward the end of Saturday's practice to stretch and massage her neck and back.
This morning, Ionescu woke up with a kink in her neck that was worse than the day before, according to Brondello.
'She had something similar last year so we want to be really mindful about [the] big picture,' Brondello said, 'and hopefully a few days off can get her ready for the next game.'

The Liberty don't play again until Wednesday at Golden State.

Leonie Fiebich remains overseas for EuroBasket, and Jonquel Jones is slated to miss at least a month after reinjuring her right ankle last week.
Jones initially suffered a low-grade ankle sprain in the Liberty's June 5 win at Washington. She missed two games before returning for Tuesday's home win against the Dream.

Jones aggravated the sprain when she landed awkwardly going for a basket.

Brondello chalked up the incident as a 'fluky situation' and doesn't believe the team rushed Jones back before she was ready.
'We always ask the players if they're good to go. She felt it was good to go,' Brondello said. 'It was just unfortunate. She really didn't have that landing space and that can happen at any time with any other players.'
The Liberty are preparing to be without Jones for approximately four to six weeks.
'You all see how valuable JJ is to us and how we want to play,' Brondello said. 'But injuries are a part of the game. It's unfortunate. JJ is going to work really hard… In the meantime, Nyara [Sabally] and [Isabelle Harrison] and Kennedy Burke really have to step up in her absence. And it's not about – you can't replace JJ the skill set and what she brings to us we have to do it by committee.'

Valkyries ride huge first half to clobber Connecticut, move above .500
If there were any concerns about the Golden State Valkyries playing down to their competition after a loss at Dallas last week, Sunday's 87-63 thrashing of the Connecticut Sun should put them to rest. En route to the second-largest win of their inaugural season, the Valkyries took a commanding 27-point halftime lead behind a 21-3 scoring run to end the second quarter. Their 36-point second frame was a quarter season high, as was the 59-point half. Their offensive outburst helped extend Connecticut's losing streak to six games in front of a seventh consecutive Chase Center sellout. Kayla Thornton came one point shy of tying her career high with 21 and eight rebounds and was a game-high plus-31, while forward Steph Talbot picked up a season-high 10 rebounds. The Valkyries outrebounded Connecticut 51-35. The Valkyries (7-6) are over .500 for the first time since they started the season 2-1. They had a chance to eclipse that mark on Tuesday against the then-two-win Wings, but faltered with one of their worst efforts of the season. After toppling Caitlin Clark's Indiana Fever on Thursday night, the Valkyries came out strong again Sunday. Five players (Thornton, Tiffany Hayes, Chloe Bibby, Veronica Burton and Laeticia Amihere) finished in double figures. Golden State scored just 14 points in the fourth quarter, but by then, the Valkyries had put Connecticut away and were playing their third unit. Rookie Kaitlyn Chen made her WNBA debut in the second quarter and immediately earned an and-1 on a drive to the hoop in transition. She finished with five points and a rebound in 21 minutes. Chen was the Valkyries' third-round pick in the WNBA Draft but was cut following training camp and joined the team last week while four players (Julie Vanloo, Temi Fagbenle, Janelle Salaün and Cecila Zandalasini) are away at EuroBasket. Point guard Carla Leite, who had started the past three games, did not see any time despite not being listed as injured. Hayes started for the first time since June 1 and finished with 14 points. Guard Bree Hall made her Valkthenyries debut after signing earlier this week and all 11 players who saw time scored. The Valkyries return home Wednesday to face the defending champion New York Liberty. Fagbenle could return by that game after Great Britain was eliminated from EuroBasket over the weekend.

SEATTLE — Nneka Ogwumike scored 26 points on 12-of-17 shooting, Skylar Diggins added 20 points and the Seattle Storm beat the defending WNBA champion New York Liberty 89-79 on Sunday. Seattle (9-5) has won three games in a row and six of seven. New York (10-3) has lost back-to-back road games and three of four overall. The Liberty committed a season-high 21 turnover, which Seattle converted into 22 points. Gabby Williams had 12 points, a career-high 10 assists, six rebounds and four steals. Williams had her first career double-double last time out in a 90-83 win over Las Vegas on Friday. Williams nearly had the ball stripped but secured it and nearly threw it away but Ogwumike made a finger-tip catch and hit a 3 just before the shot clock expired to give Seattle an 85-79 lead with 1:30 left in the game. Breanna Stewart led the Liberty with 18 points. Ogwumike grabbed seven rebounds and moved past Tina Thompson (3,070) into ninth in WNBA history with 3,077 career rebounds. Sabrina Ionescu (neck), Jonquel Jones (ankle) and Leonie Fiebich (overseas) did not play for the Liberty. Rebekah Gardner and Marine Johannes made their first starts of the season for the short-handed Liberty. Johannes hit two 3s and scored 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting in the first half and finished with 17 points. Shilo Sanders clowns brother Shedeur over speeding ticket drama
Shilo did Shedeur dirty. The middle Sanders son poked fun at his older brother in a new video — part of his 'Tampa Food Tour' YouTube series — when he made a joke about Shedeur's recent issues with speeding in Ohio. In the clip, Shilo is crossing a street in Tampa when he takes the jab at the Browns rookie quarterback. Advertisement Getty Images 'We out here in Tampa. We gotta be careful crossing the street, especially if Shedeur is out here,' Shilo said in the clip before making himself laugh. Shilo was, of course, referencing Shedeur's recent issues with speeding tickets, which made headlines last week. Advertisement Shedeur was stopped and cited for going 101 mph, 41 miles over the posted speed limit, on June 17 in a Cleveland suburb and had been stopped two weeks before that in another stop, where he was cited for 91 mph in a 75 mph zone. A spokesperson for the Browns told that Shedeur was 'taking care of the tickets' and that the team had addressed the citations with him.
