Sardines for R1: how one fisherman is changing the game
Rishi Prem and his son, Tashil Singh, selling sardines in Arena Park

Rishi Prem, of Chatsworth, is selling sardines for as little as R1 each or R12 a dozen. It's a steal compared to the current going price that averages R30.
Prem is one of a few subsistence fishermen, who fish for a living. His profit is meagre.
'I am offering the sardines at an affordable price, so everyone can enjoy this delicious source of protein. I am selling for small profits," said Prem, who sells in Arena Park.
The sardines arrived in Port Edward on Saturday, two weeks before they were expected. And the frenzy among subsistence fishermen, seine netters and those following the sardine run is evident from the pictures and videos being circulated on social media.
From Port Edward the silvery fish travelled down to Warner Beach in Amanzimtoti on Tuesday. Today, they are expected at Amanzimtoti and Isipingo.

But not everyone is selling the sardines at R1 each.
In Durban, prices average R30 per dozen. Not to be outdone, the prices in Johannesburg dropped from R35 to R30 between Saturday and Tuesday.
Fazel Fareed, a seine netter from Montford, said despite the rough seas and the battle to get the shoal to the shore on Tuesday, they caught a full net, or equivalent to 500 crates of fish.
"The shoals are abundant compared to last year. We expect more sardines to come down the coastline. Today, I will be netting in Amanzimtoti and Isipingo," said Fareed.
Fellow seine netter, Jayce Govender, removed four nets at Port Edward on Saturday.
'There were about 30 sharks in one net. Altogether, we pulled out about 50 sharks," he said.
The nets were opened and the sharks were safely released.
Govender said a net, once damaged by sharks, cost around R350 000.
Sardine lovers flocked to Warner Beach to catch their own sardines

"One cannot just buy a replacement net. It has to be made. It was unfortunate that a netter lost his net on Saturday when the ropes broke off."
Other than sardines, shoals of red-eye fish, shad, garrick and mackerel have emerged at this time. The economic impact of the sardine run, said Govender, was phenomenal.
'From a commercial point of view, it improves tourism and creates about 3 000 jobs. It is a great economic contributor."
Kioshan Govender, a seine netter, netted about 200 crates at Warner Beach.

Volkswagen still most popular brand for young South Africans, but Suzuki catching up
Polo stands for Popular, among buyers under 35. Image: Supplied For the past 10 years, Volkswagen has been the most popular brand for South Africa's new and used vehicle buyers aged under the age of 35. According to Lightstone, financing data shows that the German brand has consistently remained the top choice for under 35s over the last decade, but below that, the rankings have shifted. Around 2020, Toyota moved from third to second spot on the leaderboard. Most popular car brands among South Africans under 35. Image: Lightstone Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Around this time Suzuki entered the top 10 for the first time and by 2024 it had taken third spot from Ford, which was second in 2015. The Blue Oval's discontinuation of smaller cars like the Fiesta, Figo and EcoSport are likely behind this, although the brand's Ranger bakkie remains immensely popular. Chery and Haval have also entered the top 10 in recent years, ranking eighth and ninth respectively in 2025, behind Hyundai, BMW and Nissan. BMW fell from fourth to sixth place between 2015 and 2025, while Chevrolet, fifth in 2015, fell rapidly off the list following the brand's discontinuation in 2017. Kia and Mazda have also fallen out of the top 10 in the past decade. The study did not show any specific model preferences among the brands, but given that the Volkswagen Polo Vivo has consistently been South Africa's most popular new passenger car model during this time period, it is likely favoured among the youth too. As for vehicle types, SUVs and crossover-type vehicles overtook hatchbacks as the most popular body style in 2024. These two formats account for 80% of sales to buyers under 35, with double cabs emerging in third, albeit with a share of less than 10%. Premium brands remain popular Interestingly, the Lightstone data also shows that since 2015 there has been a gradual increase in the average price point at which younger buyers were prepared to finance a vehicle, with this number rising from R200,000 to R321,500. This outpaces the inflation rate by just over R5,000. ALSO READ: All you need to know about May 2025's vehicle sales, including the 50 top sellers Premium vehicle brands also remain popular, albeit to a lesser extent, as Lightstone's automotive data analyst Andrew Hibbert explains. There is still a demand for premium brands amongst the younger consumers as both Audi and BMW have retained spots inside the Top 10 over the past decade, although they have shifted slightly from where they were in 2015,' Hibbert said. The percentage of female finance applicants has increased over the last decade. Image: Lightstone The Lightstone data analysis also showed some positive momentum on the gender front. In 2015, just 35% of finance applicants below the age of 35 were women, but this has gradually grown to 40% over the past 10 years. IOL

Essential tips to prevent common wedding day regrets
There's so much to take into consideration when planning a wedding. Image: Freepik Planning a wedding is often described as one of the most exciting times in a couple's life, but let's be honest, it's also one of the most stressful. From the moment the engagement ring is slipped on and the wedding date is set, couples immediately get stuck into planning their big day. From finding the ideal wedding venue to finalising menus, couples strive for perfection. And yet, after the confetti settles and the last slice of cake is eaten, many newlyweds find themselves looking back with a few 'if onlys.' Nick Bramer from Country House Weddings in England has seen his fair share of dream days. Over the years, he's worked with hundreds of couples, and with that experience comes valuable insight into what people often wish they'd done differently. 'After working with hundreds of couples over the years, you start to notice patterns in what people regret most,' explains Bramer. 'The good news is that most of these issues are completely preventable with a bit of forward planning.' So, before you tie the knot, take a look at these five common regrets Bramer hears time and again and how you can avoid making the same mistakes. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Not hiring a videographer This one comes up more than you might expect. Many couples skip the videographer to save on costs, only to regret it later on. While having an album full of photographs is great, video captures other aspects of the day differently. You can't be everywhere at the same time on your day, but your videographer can capture moments for you that you'll be able to watch later. 'I can't tell you how many couples come back to me months later wishing they'd booked a videographer,' says Bramer. 'Photos are beautiful, but there's something magical about hearing your vows again or watching your dad's speech. You can't put a price on those memories.' A videographer can capture moments you miss. Image: Donovan Kelly / Pexels Overspending on flowers We all love a beautiful floral display, but Bramer warns against blowing a massive portion of your budget on arrangements that guests may barely remember. While flowers add elegance, they're gone the next day, and that money could often be spent on more meaningful aspects of your celebration. 'Flowers are lovely, but they're gone the next day,' Bramer notes. 'I've seen couples spend thousands on centrepieces when simpler arrangements would have looked just as stunning. That money could go towards better photography or an extra course at dinner.' Don't spend too much money on flower arrangements. Image: Matheus Bertelli / Pexels Rushing the timeline Wedding days tend to go by in a blur. Trying to pack too much into the schedule can turn what should be a joyful, flowing experience into a frenzied marathon. Bramer stresses the importance of allowing time to breathe and be present. 'The biggest mistake is trying to fit everything in,' says Bramer. 'Your wedding day should flow naturally. If you're constantly watching the clock, you're not present for your own celebration.' Poor communication with vendors As you get closer to the big day and stress levels rise, the last thing you need is a caterer showing up with the wrong menu or the DJ getting the playlist completely wrong. Regular check-ins with suppliers can eliminate many of these headaches. 'Communication breakdowns cause more wedding day stress than anything else,' warns Bramer. 'A quick check-in with your vendors a week before makes sure everyone's on the same page.' Overlooking guest comfort While it's natural to want your wedding to look beautiful, don't forget that it also needs to feel good, especially for your guests. From accessible bathrooms and shaded seating to entertainment for little ones, small details can make a big difference. 'Your guests' comfort should be a priority,' Bramer advises. 'If grandma can't hear the ceremony or kids are getting restless, it affects the whole atmosphere. Simple touches like providing blankets for outdoor events or having a quiet space for families make all the difference.' Make sure that all your guests will be comfortable. Experience the excitement: Innovations at the Comrades Marathon for runners and spectators
Sibusiso Gumbi, the acting Chief Executive of the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority. Image: Supplied Comrades Marathon runners and spectators could witness innovations along the route to make it a memorable, fun, and vibrant event, stated the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority on Friday. The economic spin-off from the Comrades Marathon Down Run, from Pietermaritzburg to Durban, on Sunday is expected to reach over R600 million for the host cities of Durban and Pietermaritzburg, said Sibusiso Gumbi, the acting Chief Executive of the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority, which has partnered with the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA). 'With all eyes on the race, we are hoping that it will inspire people, whether they watch it on the roadside or on their televisions, to choose KZN for their next holiday or attend one of our many sporting events that are hosted in our province,' he added. Gumbi said at least 1800 jobs were created because the CMA brings more visitors to the region than any other big international sporting event. 'We have everything a tourist could wish for: beautiful scenery, the beach, the bush, and the Berg, diverse attractions, including game reserves and safari experiences,' he said. Next Stay Close ✕ Meanwhile, CMA General Manager, Alain Dalais, said 22,677 runners have qualified for the 2025 ultra-marathon – 20% of the field are women, and organisers are expecting at least 24,000 to start the race. 'With the route going through some suburbs, there will be 47 refreshment stations and several 'fun, vibey' activation points and spectator zones to support the runners,' Dalais said. The previous record for the Down Run was 19,047 runners set in 2018. The ultra-marathon has attracted 3,063 international runners: 1,282 from the rest of Africa and 1,781 from countries outside Africa. 'We expect those international athletes to bring around another 3,000 family, loved ones, and travelling companions with them; hence, some 6,000 international visitors will be coming to the province,' Dalais said. 'The street finish in Durban is another innovation this year, with one of the biggest bonuses for the runners being that they won't need to climb stairs after finishing, as has been the case in previous years.' Hotelier Brett Tungay, board chairman of the regional branch of the Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa (Fedhasa) said: 'Bearing in mind the overall trajectory of the year for KZN, there is a real sense of optimism in tourism circles. The hospitality industry was expecting positive tourism figures driven by the participation of international runners and the influx of domestic visitors from various regions of the country.' The eThekwini Municipality stated that the Cleansing and Solid Waste Unit is working full force, conducting a pre-Comrade's Marathon route clean-up. Teams are picking up litter, sweeping the street, and clearing illegal dumps to ensure the route is spotless. The Msunduzi Municipality indicated that it has completed all route preparations and is ready to welcome thousands of athletes and spectators to Pietermaritzburg. The Comrades Marathon, taking place on Sunday, is expected to attract thousands of athletes and spectators to the Durban shores. The race will be run from the City Hall in Pietermaritzburg to Durban's Moses Mabhida Stadium. Image: Supplied
