'Real excitement' as GAIL's finally opens in Prestwich following controversial start
It's 10am and by first assumptions, the arrival of GAIL's in Prestwich this morning (Friday, February 7) has gone without much fanfare. There's no queues outside, there's little noise on the streets and people are easy to idly pass by without even a second glance. But inside, it's a very different story.
Each table is packed out and as soon as one is cleared, another is immediately snapped up by families, co-workers and even Prestwich's mayor as they all enjoy a freshly brewed coffee and a pastry.
Taking over the former NatWest bank on Bury New Road, the arrival of the artisan chain - its first north Manchester bakery - has not been without its controversy. Independent businesses owners feared it would impact on local trade, and then there was the whole awkward blunder of forgetting the T in Prestwich.

But it's a new day, it's a new year and, however you look at it, Prestwich now has a GAIL's. But there's certainly an electric atmosphere within the café with croissants - savoury or sweet - as well as cakes, sandwiches, salads and iced coffees all being scooped up just as quickly as the tables.
'I didn't imagine it'd be this busy,' one worker tells a woman in line. 'We're almost running out of food,' she jokes before a chef arrives with a huge tray full of freshly-baked almond croissants ready to restock the counter.
The new site has been given a light and breezy aesthetic, expanding out its former bank layout but retaining its original 4.5m high ceilings. Taking inspiration from the 'diverse economic and architectural elements which characterise the surrounding areas', there are many nods to the town's weaving manufacturing history.
Using a 'simple' palette, the space also features steel cladding, scaffolding poles and task lights to further pay into the industrial roots of Prestwich and its significance in the Victorian era.
'I think it looks brilliant,' local resident Rebecca Hughes tells the M.E.N as she waits in line to order a mid-morning treat for herself and her mum. 'I really love what they've done with the place, they've really opened it out.'
She adds: 'It just fell into convenience that we're here on the first day, but we are both very excited to have a GAIL's here in Prestwich. There is a lot of hope around here that it will bring more people to the area which will also help the other amazing businesses here. I think it's great for Prestwich.'
On the menu side of things, there is much to recognise and enjoy if you have ever been to GAIL's before. The morning rotation includes cinnamon buns, cheese straws, sausage rolls and ham and cheese croissants, whilst lunchtime service includes focaccia sandwiches, parmesan chicken buns, beetroot, lentil and goat's cheese salad pots, and a very delightful and comforting chicken, tarragon and ham pie slice.
There's also flourless chocolate cakes, cookies, the very decadent sea salt caramel, banana and pecan cake, and Soho buns - a type of small cream-filled delight laced with dark chocolate. There's, of course, plenty of coffee as well as matcha, tea, and juices to drink up too.
In addition to its in-store options, which can be ordered to dine-in or take-out, there's also a mini shop featuring loaf cakes, cheese biscuits, crackers, jams, honey and coffee all packaged up and ready to be bought to take home too.
The chain, which first started life in London in the early 1990s, is now part of more than 140 different neighbourhoods across the UK, including sites in the city centre, Altrincham, Didsbury and Wilmslow.
The proof will be in the pudding as to how GAIL's manages to fit into the diverse and lively neighbourhood of Prestwich, but its first open morning is already a strong indication that residents are prepared to welcome it in.
GAIL's is on 463 Bury New Road, Prestwich, M25 1AB.

Doctor mistakenly implants wrong embryo in IVF patient mix-up
One of Australia's top IVF providers mistakenly implanted a patient with her own embryo instead of her partner's. Monash IVF said the incident occurred on June 5 at a clinic in Melbourne but did not provide further details, such as how it learned of the bungle or what the couple planned to do next. The company said it was supporting the couple, who it did not identify. It marks the second fertility clinic mix-up of its kind in the country, heightening concerns about an industry that did not have much active government oversight until recently. The clinic said the patient's embryo was mistakenly implanted under a treatment plan which called for an embryo from the patient's partner to be transferred. The incident builds on a reputational maelstrom for Monash IVF, which was already reeling from an April disclosure that an Australian woman had given birth to a stranger's baby after a fertility doctor accidentally implanted the wrong embryo in Brisbane in 2023. That mix-up sparked concerns about security protocols at IVF clinics and an industry which is only now in the process of being more regulated. Monash claimed the world's first IVF pregnancy five decades ago and is Australia's second-largest IVF provider, carrying out nearly a quarter of the country's 100,000 assisted reproductive cycles a year, according to industry data. "This mix-up, the second reported incident at Monash IVF, risks shaking confidence not just in one provider but across the entire fertility sector," said Hilary Bowman-Smart, a researcher and bioethicist at the University of South Australia. Shares of Monash IVF were down 25 per cent by mid-session on Tuesday, against a rising broader market. The stock is just over half its value before the April announcement. "We had thought the Brisbane clinic embryo transfer error was an isolated incident," Craig Wong-Pan, an analyst at RBC Capital Markets, said in a client note. "We believe there is now risk of a greater impact of reputational damage and market share losses to MVF's operations." Monash IVF had already hired a lawyer to run an independent investigation after the Brisbane incident, and said on Tuesday it has extended the scope of that investigation. It added that it was installing interim extra verification safeguards to ensure patient confidence. It said it had reported the Melbourne incident to the Victorian Department of Health and industry licensing body, the Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee (RTAC), part of industry group the Fertility Society of Australia. Victorian health minister Mary-Anne Thomas said the department was investigating the company and the incident. "Families should have confidence that the treatment they are receiving is done to the highest standard," she said. "It is clear Monash IVF has failed to deliver that, which is completely unacceptable." Fertility Society president Petra Wale said the incident would have had an emotional toll on the family, but stressed mistakes in the sector were rare. The society reiterated a call to implement nationally consistent laws around IVF. Currently, the country's IVF industry is regulated by a combination of industry bodies and state and territory health departments, resulting in a governance and compliance system that some groups say is too complex. Reports of transferring the wrong embryo are rare, according to fertility experts, and Monash's Brisbane mix-up was widely reported as the first known case of its kind.

Natwest to close Wiltshire town centre branch this year
NatWest has confirmed that it will close its Trowbridge branch later this year as it reveals the closing date. NatWest has published a list of branch closures, with a number of Wiltshire branches set to be axed, including Chippenham and Trowbridge. The Wiltshire bank closures are among 55 nationwide, with a swathe of town centres across the UK to say goodbye to vital banking resources. The bank has confirmed the Trowbridge branch at 62 Fore Street will close its doors for good on October 16, 2025. In a document detailing plans for the closure, the bank informed customers its services could be accessed online. The document includes details of the nearest NatWest branches are in Bath, Kingswood in Bristol, and Wells. In addition, NatWest customers will be able to use banking hubs operated by Cash Access UK, including the Westbury branch. A spokesperson told the paper that the move was driven by more customers 'than ever before' using digital banking. Banking in south west Wiltshire has taken a hit in recent years. In nearby Warminster, the Lloyds bank building closed in December last year, with MP Dr Andrew Murrison lamenting the impact the closure could cause. Last week, Loungers Ltd confirmed it would be turning the high-street building into a lounge bar. Trowbridge also saw banking turbulence earlier this year after a Honda ploughed through the front, forcing the bank to shut for repairs. However, the branch reopened at the end of May, offering in-person banking once again. On the afternoon of Wednesday, May 28, customers could be seen entering the branch and using facilities inside. The establishment's Google Maps page also shows the branch is operating under its normal hours. A spokesperson for Nationwide confirmed the branch reopened on May 19. On Friday, March 14, shortly before 2:30pm, the hatchback smashed into of the branch on Castle Street, Trowbridge. Following the incident, the branch was boarded up, with a notice taped to the front of the bank reading: 'The branch is currently closed, we are working as quickly as possible to re-open'.
