He told the show: "I want to prove to everybody that says I'm just going to be a drug dealer or in prison - I want to prove them wrong and show that just because I had a s*** upbringing doesn't mean I can't change it."
But Cantrill has now pleaded guilty to possessing class A diamorphone - a prescription only opiod - with intent to supply and possession of cannabis.
The 28-year-old is now facing a prison sentence when he returns to court in July for sentencing.
Cantrill was previously locked up in 2020 after he attacked his ex-girlfriend at her home.
Tyra Campbell was left fearing for her life when she was choked until she could barely breathe.
As she called 999, Cantrill chillingly told her: "Snitches get stitches".
At time, he was subject to a community order over an attack on his own mum and an assault on police.
Cantrill was placed into care as a baby but left aged 17 to become a MMA fighter.
He also went into the army for two years and also worked as a teaching assistant.
In the latest hearing at Plymouth Crown Court, Judge Robert Linford said he recognised Cantrill's name and remembered the TV programme about him.
Cantrill told him he is a member of a boxing club in Manchester that is trying to teach kids to deal with problems in a "fist fight rather than with knives and guns".
He has been remanded into custody ahead of sentencing.

The ransom notes that followed stirred up an uncontrollable press storm, but when the culprits fell silent, the police faltered, and Catriona and Adam were never seen again. Now, a man's body has been discovered, with indisputable links to the original kidnap. Hollyoaks confirms who killed Dennis Savage - and it wasn't Clare or Banks

Hollyoaks spoilers follow for Tuesday's (June 10) episode that is now available to view on Channel 4 streaming. The episode in question will air on E4 on at 7pm. An unexpected twist in the tale of who killed Dennis Savage (Joe Tracini) has confirmed that the murderer is none other than – drum roll please – Jez Blake (Jeremy Sheffield). Dennis, who was a fan-favourite, featured on-screen between 2011 and 2014, with a brief comeback 2018. However, according to Dodger Savage (Danny Mac), who staged a comeback earlier this year after a decade, Dennis was killed after he was injured in a hit-and run, with Rex Gallagher (Jonny Labey) driving the car in question. Though he is believed to have survived the incident, Dennis subsequently went missing, with Dodger believing that DI Banks (Drew Cain) and wife Clare Devine (Gemma Bissix) were to blame for his murder. The criminal power couple, as fans know, adopted Tori (Harriet O'Shea), who was previously in the care of Dennis. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Feeling some semblance of guilt for her role in the trafficking operation, Grace Black (Tamara Wall) opted to give Tori back to the Blakes. Tori's arrival at the flat put Jez on edge, particularly because of the USB file containing recordings of his therapy sessions with Tommy Odenkirk (Brandon Fellows). It subsequently came to light that the reason for his caginess was due to the fact that he killed Dennis – which was confirmed via a close-up of the book he keeps track of his victims in, with a picture of Dennis included. Liberty (Jessamy Stoddart), meanwhile, was suspicious of Jez's behaviour and thus started to investigate, getting dangerously close to the truth. Jez, however, covered his tracks by claiming that – on the therapy recordings – he confessed his true love for Lib. More Trending Taken aback, Lib was in shock, but passion soon followed, with her and Jez sleeping together. The Blake family dynasty continues to get even more complicated!
