'No excuses' for Tyrone in Mayo loss - O'Rourke

Yahooa day ago

Tyrone manager Malachy O'Rourke felt his side did not "get to the pitch of the game" in their 2-17 to 1-13 defeat by Mayo.
Coming into the All-Ireland round-robin contest off an impressive win over Ulster champions Donegal seven days prior, the Red Hands found themselves 1-9 to 0-4 down at half-time.

Although they would cut the deficit to a point in the second half, Mayo, under the charge of Stephen Rochford after Kevin McStay stepped away for health reasons, pulled away to bounce back from their opening-round loss to Cavan.
"We'd a great win last week and we came here knowing, after the disappointment of the Cavan game, Mayo would be coming here with real hunger," said O'Rourke.
"We knew we'd have to meet that head on and I suppose that's the most disappointing thing, we felt in the first half we didn't get to the pitch of the game.
"We were a bit flat and left ourselves with a lot to do. In fairness to the boys, we dug in well, we got it back to a point but we made too many mistakes, we weren't playing well enough and Mayo deserved the victory. We've no excuses."

While Tyrone were in action on consecutive weekends, Mayo had a week's break from their last outing, although O'Rourke did not feel that was the telling reason for his side's flat performance.
"There's no doubt that the week turnaround is very small and it could have some effect, but we're not using that as an excuse either," he added.
"We knew what the story was, we knew exactly what Mayo would bring and we were hoping we'd be able to meet that and get another really good performance.
"For all of us in the changing room, we didn't get to the level that we need to get to and the level we expect of ourselves."
Tyrone will conclude their round-robin action against Cavan at a neutral venue during the weekend of 14/15 June.

Broncos' Free Agent Signing Draws Comparison to Steve Atwater

Broncos' Free Agent Signing Draws Comparison to Steve Atwater originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Strong secondary play has been key to the Denver Broncos' success in recent seasons. With players like Patrick Surtain II and Brandon Jones currently on its roster, as well as Justin Simmons and Aqib Talib previously donning orange and blue jerseys, the Broncos have possessed a number of marquee names in its secondary. Advertisement This past offseason, the Broncos added another player in the upper echelon of NFL defensive backs in Talanoa Hufanga, who signed a three-year, $39 million contract with team in March. Even though he has yet to appear in a regular season game with the Broncos, Hufanga – and his explosive playing style – has received praise from one of the team's all-time greats: Steve Atwater, who has two Super Bowl rings, two First-Team All-Pro honors and a Pro Football Hall of fame bust to his name. 'I see it and I love it,' Atwater told The Denver Post's Troy Renck. 'You can't worry about what might happen when you are trying to make the tackle. You just have to do it. (Hufanga) absolutely brings it.' Hufanga is looking for a fresh start in Denver after injury-riddled seasons in his final two years with the San Francisco 49ers. He suffered a season-ending ACL tear during Week 11 of the 2023 campaign and was placed on injured reserve after suffering an injury to his wrist in 2024. He made 90 tackles (including 59 solo stops), caught three interceptions and defended three passes during that time frame. In addition to being a First-Team All-Pro and a Pro Bowl selection, he was named the Polynesian Professional Football Player of the Year by the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame. Trial for Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco begins in Dominican Republic

Associated Press PUERTO PLATA, Dominican Republic (AP) — The trial of Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco started Monday in the Dominican Republic in a sexual abuse case involving a 14-year-old girl. Franco told judges he wants justice to be done. Franco has been charged in the northern province of Puerto Plata with sexually abusing a minor, sexual and commercial exploitation against a minor, and human trafficking. Prosecutors introduced documents as pieces of evidence against the 24-year-old Franco during the first hearing, and added they will call at least seven witnesses in a trial that is expected to proceed on Thursday, Friday and next Monday. Franco heard the charges against him and could be sentenced to up to 30 years in jail. 'I heard all they said, but I wanted to say that justice must be done,' Franco told the judges. Irina Ventura, one of Franco's attorneys, said part of the evidence against her client is fraudulent and illegal. Teodosio Jaquez, another member of the player's legal team, said that the underage girl denied having sexual relations with the player. Prosecutor Claudio Cordero said all the evidence 'was obtained in a lawful manner, are self-sufficient and will lead to a conviction, which is sought by the prosecutor's office.' Franco was having an All-Star season in 2023 before Dominican authorities began investigating allegations he had been in a relationship with a minor and paid her mother thousands of dollars for her consent. The trial was initially scheduled for Dec. 12, but was postponed until June. The trial could take up to eight months to conclude, based on the average duration of trials in the Dominican Republic. ___ AP MLB: recommended

Phillies' Rob Thomson Defends Decision to Leave Jesus Luzardo in Amid Poor Outing

Phillies' Rob Thomson Defends Decision to Leave Jesus Luzardo in Amid Poor Outing originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies suffered an embarrassing defeat, losing 17 to 7 to the Milwaukee Brewers in the team's worst loss of the year. Phillies manager Rob Thomson was in the center of debate, as he left starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo in for debatably longer than he should've. Advertisement With Thomson not going to the bullpen, Luzardo's ERA soared to 3.58 after allowing 12 earned runs in 3.1 innings. Before his disastrous outing against the Brewers, Luzardo had a 2.15 ERA across 67 innings. After Luzardo's rough outing, Thomson was asked whether he should've gone to the bullpen. After the game, Thomson defended himself amid his decision to keep Luzardo in the game despite getting shelled. During Phillies Postgame Live on NBC Sports Philadelphia, Thomson explained his decision to keep Luzardo in. "Statistics matter," Thomson said. "You want your guys to have great years, but at some point, too, you've got to battle through things, and you've got to do it for your teammates. You've got to strike that balance." Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson (59) is ejected from the game against the Milwaukee Brewers in the fourth inning at Citizens Bank Ross-Imagn Images Thomson's decision to keep Luzardo out on the mound amid his worst outing was a questionable one. It might've taken Luzardo out of the Cy Young race, and could jeopardize his All-Star candidacy. Advertisement While those individual accolades may not matter to Thomson or even Luzardo, they do play a role in the Phillies fans' minds. Having a player earn such an award is a great source of pride for the fanbase. Bryce Harper winning the MVP in 2021 was a big deal for the Phillies and their fans. Luzardo was off to an incredible start to 2025, and he was in Cy Young discussions along with fellow Phillies ace Zack Wheeler. But this outing likely takes Luzardo out of that race. As other starters around the league have put together great seasons, Luzardo's blow-up outing puts him behind in the Cy Young and All-Star rankings. While Thomson's decision and explanation are best for the team, the fans don't look at it the same way. Having Luzardo knocked out of the Cy Young race after such a strong start, just to save the bullpen in a game in late May, isn't a fair trade-off. Advertisement But, Luzardo isn't completely out of things, and if he can have an incredible rest of the year, securing individual accolades is far from off the table. This outing, however, is a tough blow in what was shaping up to be an incredible Phillies debut season.
