Straka, Hovland, Aberg seek first major win, Ryder Cup spot
As three of the world's four highest-ranked players without a major victory, they seek a breakthrough win in the showdown at Quail Hollow starting Thursday while Donald studies talent for September's matches against the host Americans at Bethpage Black.
"The majors are important," Donald said. "That's the time when everyone gets together on good golf courses and you have stacked fields. Just to see how they're playing in those is another point that we take into consideration quite a lot."
Only four European golfers have ever won the PGA Championship: England's Jim Barnes in the 1916 inaugural and 1919, Irishman Padraig Harrington in 2008, Germany's Martin Kaymer in 2010 and Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy in 2012 and 2014.
Aberg is world number six, Straka is ranked ninth and Hovland is 11th. Only world number two McIlroy and Ireland's 10th-ranked Shane Lowry rate higher among Europeans.
Among them, only Straka is in the top six in Cup qualifying points, which after August's British Masters will be used to select half the Europe team, joined by Donald's six captain's picks.
Straka won January's PGA American Express tournament and captured last week's Truist Championship for his fourth career PGA Tour title to jump among the Cup points leaders.
"The goal all year has been to make that team. Definitely was a little bit behind in the points," Straka said. "Hopefully I can keep playing well and be in the top six there by the end of the year."
He expects a tough crowd of US supporters near New York.
"I think the fans are going to be coming out in full support for the US and I think it's going to be fun but in a very different way," said Straka. "They're going to make it very challenging and it's going to be tough. Hopefully I can get my game in shape and keep it going through that time."
For now, Straka hopes to stay under the radar despite two wins in 2025.
"I'm a little bit shy," he said. "I definitely enjoy being under the radar a little more. It makes it maybe a little bit easier to prepare because you don't have all the eyeballs on you."
'Never want to miss it'
Aberg, who had not seen Quail Hollow until a May 4 practice round, won his second PGA Tour title at Riviera in February. He was a runner-up at last year's Masters in his major debut.
"The experiences I've had over the last two years have definitely helped me," Aberg said. "Ryder Cup in '23 definitely helped me because I was able to hang out with those guys I had really only seen on TV up until that point.
"I want to be on the team this year as well... if you've ever been on one team, you never want to miss it again and that's how I feel about Bethpage this year."
Hovland, a 27-year-old from Oslo, won the 2023 Tour Championship and PGA playoff crown but had not won since then until March's Valspar Championship.
"I'm still not entirely happy with where I'm at," Hovland said. "I'm definitely trending in the right direction, but there's still just some stuff left in there that just doesn't allow me to play to the level I want."
Hovland's best finish in 21 major starts was a runner-up effort at the 2023 PGA Championship.

'Backs to the Wall' for surfing's cancer survivor Flores
Within months of stepping away from competition, Flores, the most successful male European in surfing history, was diagnosed with a brain tumour that turned his life upside down. He survived to tell the tale, after years of silence, in a new documentary "Dos au mur" ("Backs to the Wall") which premiered in Paris on Wednesday. "I told myself it was time to talk about it," he told AFP. "I needed to get it off my chest, to send a message to my children and others who might need it. This was clearly the hardest ordeal of my life." - Inoperable - Flores was born in Reunion, an island in the Indian Ocean which is a paradise for surfers - in spite of the large number of sharks. His father Patrick coached him from the age of three and he duly became one of the best in the world, competing for 15 years on the professional circuit, winning four prestigious championship tour events. Blessed with talent in the tubes, he was also quick with his temper. "I think I've got the most fines on the professional tour," he admits in the film which is directed by Julie and Vincent Kardasik. Yet in 2021, having become a father for the second time, he decided to retire without really explaining why. "For several years, I had a lot of migraines," he tells AFP. "I was always tired, unmotivated." A few months later, he was diagnosed with a tumour at the base of his brain. Worse yet, many surgeons considered it inoperable. "That explained why I wasn't feeling my best. The news shattered me," admits Flores. Brain tumour survival rates do not make pretty reading: just a third make it through five years although that figure improves for people under 40, according to medical figures in France. In theory Flores stood a fighting chance if he could find a surgeon who would operate. Fortunately he did. In 2022, he finally underwent brain surgery in Montpellier supervised by pioneering neurosurgeon Hugues Duffau. Flores was awake for all of it. "The operation went well," he recalls, still traumatised by the operation and the effects. "After that, it was a mission. I'd been warned. I had to relearn how to speak, write, and read. "I suffered significant memory loss. My children had become strangers to me." But with the constant support of his wife Hinarani de Longeaux, a model and former Miss Tahiti winner, Flores began to rebuild. He also had the support of the surf community, notably his old friend and rival Kelly Slater. "He called me almost every day, before, during, and after the operation," says Flores. "I was lucky to have great support." Olympic gold A little over a year after the operation, he was invited by the French Surfing Federation to manage the surf team at the 2024 Olympics: the event was to take place in Teahupo'o, Tahiti, where he had lived for several years. "I thought: why not? This will allow me to stimulate my brain, and surfing is what I do best," he says. The team consisted of four surfers who included his sister-in-law Vahine Fierro, and a young Tahitian Kauli Vaast who, according to Flores, was a natural on the pro tour. The veteran turned coach convinced them that they had what it took to win everything. And it worked. Fierro won the Tahiti Pro in 2024, the first French winner since Flores in 2015 while the team picked up two Olympic medals. Johanne Defay took bronze in the women's shortboard while Vaast went on to win gold in the men's shortboard, with Flores screaming his support from the water during every round. "It was truly special, the highlight of my career," says Flores. "He's my little brother, and I'm very attached to the notion of passing on the knowledge. I experienced it as a cycle." Three years after his operation, Flores' memory is "gradually returning". The tumour, however, is still there, a reminder of the dark days of 2021 even if it no longer haunts him. "I continue to monitor it with MRIs every three months," says Flores with a clear-eyed calm. "You have to keep an eye on its size, take it seriously, but above all, you have to keep moving forward." © 2025 AFP

Brazil held in Ancelotti debut, Paraguay move closer to qualifying
The 65-year-old Italian, who left Real Madrid at the end of the European season, has been charged with taking Brazil through the latter stages of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. The former AC Milan and Chelsea manager replaced Dorival Junior, who was sacked at the end of March after the 4-1 thrashing at the hands of reigning champions and bitter rivals Argentina. Thursday's result leaves the Selecao in fourth place in the qualifying table on 22 points while Ecuador, the surprise package in the campaign, remain in second place on 24 points. Argentina, who face Chile later on Thursday, lead the standings on 32 points and are the only team to have officially secured their place in the tournament which will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Paraguay, who enjoyed a 2-0 win over Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay, sit in third place, level on points with Ecuador. Dane Olesen, Chile's Del Solar share PGA Canadian Open lead
Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen and Del Solar each fired nine-under par 61 to seize the 18-hole lead at rain-softened TPC Toronto Osprey Valley. Olesen, a back-nine starter, eagled the par-five 18th and birdied three of his last four holes -- from just inside 14 feet at seven and eight -- after only making the field as a Monday qualifier. "I played great, but my putting was exceptional," the Dane said. "Don't think I missed any putts really out there. I definitely holed some long ones as well. It was nice to see everything go in." Tour rookie Del Solar was 10-under through 16 holes but a bogey-par finish denied him a shot at the PGA record of 58. "I was actually having fun," Del Solar said. "One of the first few rounds of the year I've just let go and go out there and play golf. "I wasn't really thinking much about the score, which that kind of led to a great score. I hit the ball great, putted it probably the best I have putted in a while. I did everything that should be done." Del Solar, ranked 316th in the world, had picked up the nickname "Mr. 57" after firing a 57 in February 2024 at Astra Championship in Colombia on the developmental Korn Ferry Tour -- the lowest-ever round in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. The lowest score in a PGA Tour event is the 58 fired by American Jim Furyk in the final round of the 2016 Travelers Championship. For a moment on the final holes, Del Solar had a chance to match or lower that mark. Del Solar had missed the cut in eight of his prior 13 US PGA starts this season, but took full advantage of soft conditions with birdie runs from the fifth through seventh and again at the ninth through 12th holes. The South American birdied from just beyond six feet at the par-three 14th and sank a 15-footer at the 16th to reach 10-under. At 17, Del Solar blasted out of a bunker to 10 feet but missed the putt and took his only bogey. Obviously need to go a little bit lower tomorrow and over the weekend to have a chance. "I'm still trying to work on some things, but I'm OK with where everything is."
