ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Bashir Jalal, a dedicated potato farmer from Zinava village in Duhok province's Sheikhan district, has been honored as the top grower of the Dutch Riviera potato across Iraq. The achievement, recognized by seed distributor Agrico, comes after more than 16 years of persistent hard work and commitment in his fields.
"The first year I planted, they recognized this potato as number one in quality," Jalal recounted. "The second year, it was still the first. After more than six years of consistent top performance, they declared, 'Enough, you must be first at the level of all of Iraq!'"
Jalal's journey began modestly, cultivating a small plot of land over a decade and a half ago. Today, his operation has expanded to 250 dunams (approximately 625,000 square meters). His consistent success led to repeated evaluations by Agrico representatives.
He attributes his success to daily vigilance. "I visit my potato fields every day for watering, applying necessary plant nutrients and pest control, and continuous monitoring,' he said.
Meanwhile, Hassan Hilmi, a representative for Agrico - a prominent Dutch seed potato company - confirmed Jalal's status to Rudaw.
"We confirm that Mr. Bashir is the first, and we always reference him as a model for our farmers," Hilmi stated. Agrico works with some 300 Iraqi farmers who collectively produce around 600 tons of the Riviera variety annually.
Beyond the Riviera, Jalal cultivates six other potato varieties, all of which are also recognized for their exceptional quality.
Kamal Arif, head of the Sheikhan Farmers' Union, noted Jalal's unique dedication, telling Rudaw, "We have nearly 600 farmers, but there are only 11 to 12 like Mr. Bashir, yet he stands out from all of them.'
The Kurdistan Region's favorable climate and fertile land contribute significantly to its thriving potato industry. Approximately 50,000 dunams of Duhok's agricultural land are dedicated to potato farming, yielding about 600,000 tons annually.
This robust sector is not only a source of local produce but also plays a vital role in diversifying the Region's economy. Surplus potatoes are regularly exported to Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, and even as far as South Africa.

The appointment comes following the retirement of former Chief Justice Jassim al-Umairi, whose resignation was approved by Iraq's Supreme Judicial Council a day earlier. Citing a source within the presidency, the state-run Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported that President Rashid 'issued a presidential decree' appointing Judge Hussein to the top judicial post. Judge Hussein previously served as deputy head of the Federal Court of Cassation and was also a reserve member of the Federal Supreme Court. His elevation comes amid a critical transitional period for Iraq's judiciary. Former Chief Justice Umairi's resignation - officially attributed to "health reasons" - followed a wave of resignations from within the Federal Supreme Court. In mid-June, six out of nine permanent members and three reserve members of the court stepped down, reportedly in direct protest against Umairi's leadership. Speaking to Rudaw on condition of anonymity, one of the resigned judges stated in mid-June, 'The behavior of the court president [Umairi] is unacceptable to us, and we are tired of dealing with his working manners.' Importantly, the resignations occurred ahead of a highly anticipated legal session concerning the Kurdistan Region. Since early June, public servants in the Region have been pressing the court to issue an injunction that would compel the federal government to resume salary disbursements, which have been frozen since late May. Tensions between Erbil and Baghdad escalated when the federal finance ministry halted all budget transfers to the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), including the salaries of over 1.2 million public employees. The ministry claimed the move was due to the KRG exceeding its 12.67 percent share of the 2025 federal budget. Kurdish political parties have widely condemned the suspension, labeling it unconstitutional and politically motivated. President Rashid's swift approval of Judge Hussein's appointment may be seen as an effort to stabilize the Federal Supreme Court amid ongoing legal and constitutional disputes, including the urgent matter of public servant salaries in the Kurdistan Region.

Iraq adopts new vision to complete Baghdad Metro project

Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, directed on Sunday that the processes for the Baghdad Metro project be finalized according to a new vision. Al-Sudani's remarks took place during a meeting he chaired to discuss the arrangements required to start implementing the Baghdad Metro project, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). The meeting discussed new ideas and processes for implementing this vital project after previous bids were rejected. Best practices for this sort of project were taken from across the world, as evidenced by the formation of an alliance between the government, local and foreign investors, and execution by multinational firms. Iraqi Prime Minister's advisor Mohammed Al-Najjar revealed in May that Iraq plans to start the first phase of the Baghdad Metro project, which involves years of development, before the end of 2025, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA). In November 2024, Naser Al-Asadi, the advisor to the Iraqi Prime Minister, announced that the design for the Baghdad Metro pathway has been finalized. Al-Asadi said that the government consulting agency has begun drafting the project's specifications for the tracks, trains, and stations, which will contain subterranean, surface, and elevated parts. With seven lines that range in length from nine to 37 kilometers, the project will cover the majority of the Iraqi capital and could be upgraded to reach other areas, according to Al-Asadi. The Iraqi cabinet announced in late July that the businesses selected to design, build, and run the Baghdad Metro project include France-based Systra and SNCV, the Spanish Alstom, Talgo, and Sener enterprises, Turkish construction companies, and Germany's Deutsche Bank. Al-Asadi told Reuters earlier that Baghdad Metro would span 148 kilometers (92 miles) with seven lines and 64 metro stops. The $18 billion-worth project should be finished after four years, according to Al-Asadi. The Baghdad Metro is a substantial endeavor aimed at reducing traffic congestion and providing a modern and efficient transportation system in the Iraqi capital, which is home to around eight million people.
