2012 Dalit Trader Assault Case: Ayodhya SC/ST court orders arrest of 10 cops
A special SC/ST court in Ayodhya has issued non-bailable warrants (NBWs) for the arrest of 10 policemen, including the then-station house officer (SHO) Jung Bahadur Singh, in connection with a 2012 case involving the alleged custodial assault and robbery of a Dalit trader, Rajkumar Sonkar.
The court has directed the inspector general (IG) of Ayodhya to ensure the arrest of all accused and produce them before the court on June 20, 2025.
According to the case details, the incident occurred on August 21, 2012, when Rajkumar Sonkar, a local trader, was allegedly detained and assaulted by policemen inside a police station. The victim has claimed that he was forced to provide food items free of cost for a police function. Upon refusal, he was allegedly beaten, and his gold chain and ₹25,000 in cash were taken.
Speaking to reporters, Martand Pratap Singh, counsel for Sonkar, said, 'My client was forcibly taken to the police station, brutally assaulted and looted by the policemen on duty. Despite repeated court orders, no action was taken.'
Sonkar later filed a complaint in the SC/ST court, which has since issued multiple warrants over the years. Despite this, no arrests were carried out. The accused policemen had moved the Allahabad high court seeking relief, but their petition was dismissed, and they were instructed to surrender within three weeks. However, they reportedly ignored the directive.
With no compliance, the SC/ST court has now taken stringent action by issuing fresh NBWs and ordering top-level police authorities to implement the order.
The next hearing in the case is scheduled for June 20, 2025.

Anticipatory bail not to be given mechanically: SC
NEW DELHI: Anticipatory bail in cases involving serious offences should not be given in a mechanical manner, the Supreme Court has said. A three-judge bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Karol, and Sandeep Mehta made the observation while setting aside an order of anticipatory bail to four accused persons in a murder case. Observing that the Patna HC had 'clearly failed' to appreciate the gravity and nature of the allegations in the case, the court directed that the accused should surrender within eight weeks. The SC passed the order on hearing an appeal filed by the victim's son challenging the order granting these four persons the anticipatory bail. 'The order of the High Court (Patna) does not disclose any reasoning for granting anticipatory bail in a matter involving serious offences under Sections 302 (Murder) and 307 (Attempt to Murder) of the IPC,' said the bench.

YSRCP president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has slammed the NDA government for the 'collapse of law and order' in the State. 'These incidents are not isolated. They show a system where law is mocked, justice is denied, and the accused, shielded by the ruling party, walk free. I warn Mr. Naidu that people will not stay silent forever,' he said.

3 Dalit minors tied to flagpole, assaulted in Karnataka; 8 held
Three Dalit minor boys were allegedly tied to a flagpole and brutally assaulted by a mob of upper-caste villagers in Harogeri village under the Naragund police station limits in Karnataka's Gadag district. The assault, which took place on May 28, surfaced only after videos began circulating on social media, triggering widespread outrage. According to police, the attack was triggered by allegations that the boys had sent obscene messages to a girl from an upper-caste community. Using this as justification, a mob of around 60 people allegedly tied the boys to a gram panchayat flagpole and beat them with ropes, sticks, and slippers. The attack left the boys with serious injuries and swelling across their bodies.
