Islamic State group claims first attack on Syrian government forces since Assad's fall

BEIRUT: The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for two attacks in southern Syria, including one on government forces that an opposition war monitor described as the first on the Syrian army to be adopted by the extremists since the fall of Bashar Assad.
In two separate statements issued late Thursday, IS said that in the first attack, a bomb was detonated targeting a 'vehicle of the apostate regime,' leaving seven soldiers dead or wounded. It said the attack occurred 'last Thursday,' or May 22, in the al-Safa area in the desert of the southern province of Sweida.
IS said that the second attack occurred this week in a nearby area during which a bomb targeted members of the U.S.-backed Free Syrian Army, claiming that it killed one fighter and wounded three.
There was no comment from the government on the claim of the attack and a spokesperson for the Free Syrian Army didn't immediately respond to a request for comment by The Associated Press.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that the attack on government forces killed one civilian and wounded three soldiers, describing it as the first such attack to be claimed by IS against Syrian forces since the fall of the 54-year Assad family's rule in December.

Dutch Far-Right Leader Threatens To Quit Ruling Coalition Over Migration Plan

Amsterdam: Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders threatened on Monday to topple the Netherlands' already fragile right-wing government, which he said did not back his ideas for stricter asylum policies. Anti-Muslim populist Wilders, who won the most recent election in the Netherlands, last week demanded immediate support for his proposals to completely halt asylum migration, send Syrian refugees back to their home country and to close asylum shelters. Coalition partners have not embraced his ideas, and have pointed out that it is up to the migration minister from Wilders' own party to work on specific proposals. After meeting government party leaders on Monday evening, Wilders said this was not enough to secure his continued support for the coalition. "We have a serious problem," he told reporters. "We will take it up again tomorrow morning, but it does not look good." The coalition led by Wilders' PVV party has struggled to reach any consensus since its installation in July last year, and needs to tackle tough decisions in the coming months, including a possible historic increase in military spending to meet new NATO targets. Recent polls have shown Wilders has lost support since joining government, putting his party roughly at par with the Labour/Green combination that is currently the second-largest in parliament.

India not starting a war, just retaliating for terror: Shashi Tharoor

India's Operation Sindoor is not an act of war but a measured response to a vile act of terror, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor said on Monday, as he led an all-party delegation to Brazil. In a firm diplomatic message, Tharoor underscored that the Pahalgam terror attack -- which claimed 26 lives -- was aimed at destabilising Kashmir's booming economy and sowing communal discord across whole idea was to signal that we are not trying to start a war,' Tharoor told Brazilian Ambassador Celso Amorim in Brasilia. 'We are just conducting retribution for an act of terror, which was a really vile act... It was horrendous and meant to do the maximum possible damage to India.'#WATCH | Brasilia, Brazil: While interacting with Ambassador Celso Amorim, Head Adviser of the Special Advisory to the President of the Republic, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor spoke on #OperationSindoorHe said, "The whole idea was to signal that we are not trying to start a war, ANI (@ANI) June 2, 2025Tharoor, speaking as head of the visiting delegation, emphasised India's stand against terrorism and the importance of rallying global understanding in the wake of increasing cross-border attacks. 'The reason we have come is very much to seek greater sympathy and understanding on the part of our friends, and also countries that are not necessarily our friends... but you are in the high friend category,' Tharoor said, referring to Brazil's recent outreach and President Lula da Silva's personal phone call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the ROLE UNDER SCRUTINYadvertisementIndia has accused Pakistan-based terror groups of orchestrating the Pahalgam attack, with The Resistance Front (TRF) — a proxy for Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)—claiming responsibility. 'We have been reporting about the Resistance Front to the UN Sanctions Committee time after time... but when we encouraged our friends in the Security Council to name the group in the April 25 statement, Pakistan — sadly with China's support — had the name removed.'He lamented that neither India nor Brazil currently sits on the Security Council, a gap he suggested should be closed. 'We have to change that situation. Both of us should be on the Council together,' he had previously informed the UN about LeT and Jaish-e-Mohammad operating through smaller entities like TRF, pointing out in its May and November 2024 reports how these fronts act as facades for banned terrorist groups. The consistent denial of acknowledgment in international statements—allegedly due to Pakistani and Chinese pressure—has sparked calls for more assertive global was no action to bring the perpetrators to justice, or even to look for them in Pakistan,' Tharoor said. Congress revokes suspension of Phillaur MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary who opposed Charanjit Singh Channi in Lok Sabha polls

Jalandhar: Congress revoked the suspension of Phillaur MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary on Monday — a move that appears to be a sign of growing bitterness between Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, former CM Charanjit Singh and others. Immediately after the revocation of his suspension, Vikramjit participated in a party function at Ludhiana's Dakha, presided over by Warring. The MLA was placed under suspension for opposing Charanjit Singh Channi during his parliamentary election from Jalandhar. In the past few days, Channi and a few other leaders had re-inducted two Ludhiana-based leaders into the party against Warring's wishes. On Monday, the latter appeared to be paying back in the same coin by getting a known Channi-baiter back into the party fold. Vikramjit's father, Santokh Singh Chaudhary, was the Jalandhar MP when he died during Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra in 2023. A byelection followed and Vikramjit's mother, Karamjit Kaur, was given the party ticket, but she lost to Sushil Rinku, who was then in AAP. In 2024, Channi was given the Congress ticket, and Karamjit Kaur joined BJP, while Vikramjit continued opposing Channi. Differences between Ashu and Warring are an open secret in the Congress. On Sunday, the same leaders re-inducted Kamaljit Singh Karwal, a friend-turned-foe of Ludhiana-based Bains brothers Simarjit Singh and Balwinder Singh. The Bains brothers had joined the Congress during Warring's Lok Sabha election campaign from Ludhiana and are considered to be his loyalists. Soon after Karwal's joining, Simarjit issued statements on Sunday evening, questioning his re-induction into the party and making it amply clear that Warring was not taken in the loop. This brought out the bitterness within Punjab Congress. Announcing the revocation of Vikramjit Singh's suspension on Monday morning, Warring wrote on his X account: "We in the @INCPunjab are glad that our colleague and the Phillaur MLA @VikramjitMLA is back with us. He is a dyed-in-wool third-generation Congressman. His homecoming will definitely strengthen the party." In the same post, Warring attached a photo which had him with and other Congress leaders — Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Punjab Congress general secretary Capt Sandeep Sandhu, and former MLA Gurkirat Kotli. Vikramjit said Warring and leader of opposition Partap Singh Bajwa revoked his suspension. A different model appears to be at work during the factional fight of Punjab Congress leaders this time. Unlike the earlier modus operandi of targeting each other's loyalists, they are inducting each other's baiters into the party fold now.
