Scotland captain Caroline Weir says it's been a positive week for Scotland, despite back-to-back Nations League defeats.A 1-0 defeat away to Austria was followed by a 2-1 loss at home to the Netherlands, despite Scotland scoring the first goal, as interim head coach Michael McArdle took charge of his first games. "We knew it was going to be tough," the midfielder said. "I thought we did well in the first half and created chances. It's small margins at this level. I'm proud of the team. The effort was there and we can take a lot of learnings from that."Credit to her [Emma Lawton] and all the other young players, they're taking their chance. It's never easy but we can see they are talented and really want it as well. As older players we've tried to show our experience."It's been a positive week. We don't want to look too far ahead. Sparse pockets of fans spread across the stands in Barcelona with just shy of 7,000 tickets sold to England fans for the match inside the 40,000-seat stadium. That is just half of the 14,000 fans that piled into the same stadium to watch England Women take on Spain in the Nations League on Tuesday - a match the Lionesses ultimately lost 2-1 as they prepare for this summer's Euros. Fans online were quick to notice how empty the stadium looked, reacting on social media. The match, which is considered as Andorra's home fixture, should have been played at Andorra's national stadium but was moved to Barcelona - a three hour drive through the Pyrenees. France boss threatens to drop Premier League target amid £25m transfer talks
France face Germany in the Nations League third-place play-off on Sunday, with boss Didier Deschamps ready to take drastic action as Chelsea pursue one of his key players France head coach Didier Deschamps has threatened to drop Mike Maignan from his team for Sunday's Nations League game against Germany. Les Bleus will face the hosts in a third-place play-off. They lost a thrilling semi-final 5-4 to Spain on Thursday night, with Maignan starting between the sticks. He has emerged as France's first-choice keeper since Hugo Lloris retired after the 2022 World Cup. Maignan has impressed at club level as well, winning the Ligue 1 title with Lille in 2021 which earned him a move to AC Milan. The 29-year-old helped the Rossoneri to win the Serie A title in his first year at the club. He has since gone on to become captain of the Italian giants, but his future at the San Siro is in doubt. Chelsea have grown interested in signing the keeper as they look to replace David Sanchez. The Blues saw an opening offer below £15million rejected this week, with Milan demanding a fee in the region of £25m. A final bid is expected to be made in the coming days, though first comes France's clash with Germany. Amid the speculation around his future, his form has suffered a downturn. And that has led Deschamps to suggest that he could drop Maignan in favour of the uncapped Lucas Chevalier or former Nottingham Forest star Brice Samba on Sunday. "Changing goalkeepers? We'll see. We'll see how Mike is, how he feels. It's still possible. No decision has been made yet, it's been a while," Deschamps said ahead of the third-place play-off in Stuttgart. "Obviously, that could also be the case regarding the goalkeeper position. Whether Mike needs a break or not... I don't have those details yet." Thursday's defeat to Spain was a frustrating one, with France at one stage losing 4-0 before a late comeback. The loss raised the pressure on Deschamps after a difficult Euro 2024 campaign, and the boss has admitted that changes are coming for Sunday. "I won't hide from you that the interest is still relative. This match is there, we're going to play it... It's Germany. It will be useful, but taking into account the very specific situation," he added. "Is the match at stake minimal? You said so. Some players aren't in the best shape. We have too little time between the two matches. There will be a lot of changes. I work according to the players. "Some have very interesting potential. They won't all be able to play. I've never deprived myself of attacking players. We had a lot of chances against Spain, but we also conceded five goals. It's a question of balance. "They're mostly young players. Cristiano Ronaldo snubs transfer offers as rivals fail with Club World Cup plan
Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that he will not be at the Club World Cup, despite comments from FIFA president Gianni Infantino last month suggesting he would be Crstiano Ronaldo says he will not play at the Club World Cup after rejecting offers from teams involved in the tournament. Ronaldo is out of contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr this month and it remains to be seen what the future holds for the 40-year-old. FIFA president Gianni Infantino, the architect behind the revamped Club World Cup, suggested last month that Ronaldo could still play despite Al-Nassr failing to qualify. Speaking to American streamer IShowSpeed, Infantino said: "Ronaldo might play for one of the teams as well at the Club World Cup. "There are discussions. Yeah, Cristiano Ronaldo might play in the Club World Cup, yeah. There are discussions with some clubs, so if any club is watching and is interested in hiring Ronaldo for the Club World Cup…who knows, who knows." However, despite approaches from clubs, Ronaldo has rejected the chance to feature at the tournament. "I will not be at the Club World Cup," he said. "Some teams reached out to me. Some made sense and others did not, but you can't try and do everything. You can't catch every ball." Fluminense president Mario Bittencourt recently revealed that he had approached Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, about playing for the Brazilian club for the tournament. Bittencourt said: "I have a relationship with Jorge. "Not a very close one but, if I call him, he answers. I asked him if there was any chance of Cristiano playing in the Club World Cup. He was very clear in telling me that he's not interested in playing in Brazil for now." After Al-Nassr's final league game of the season, Ronaldo prompted plenty of speculation about his future as he wrote on social media: "This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all." However, reports have claimed that Al-Nassr believe Ronaldo will sign a new deal and remain in Saudi Arabia. The former Manchester United star is currently away on international duty with Portugal and has stated that a decision about his future is "almost final". Ronaldo scored the winner as Portugal beat Germany 2-1 in their Nations League semi-final clash on Wednesday and they will now meet Spain in the final on Sunday. Speaking ahead of the final, Portugal boss Roberto Martinez hailed Ronaldo's influence on the team. "Cristiano is a player who is playing in his fourth final for the national team," Martinez said. "He's incredible, an example. I love his hunger. He's a player who has won everything and the next day he's starting from scratch. "For Rodrigo Mora, Quenda, Joao Neves to arrive in the locker room and be able to work with Cristiano is a gift. I hope tomorrow is a memorable day in our careers. I think the team's work is what happens in the locker room. "We have to help the players enjoy the game, make a difference and win. In two and a half years, our work in the locker room has been mutual. We all have a total commitment, it's a supportive locker room that likes responsibility."
