Hornsea sheltered flats refurb delayed after well found
Work to refurbish two supported living developments in Hornsea has been delayed by more than six months after contractors discovered a "whole raft of issues" in one of the buildings.East Riding of Yorkshire Council said work to alter Meregarth, which was built in the 1970s, had been expected to be completed in February.However, Andrew Hazell, building design manager at the authority, said the discovery of a well, along with problems with some of the walls and bowed concrete beams supporting the floors, had delayed the £4.26m scheme.Despite the setback, the council said it was "reasonably confident" it could deliver the project within budget.
Announcing the plans in August, the council said both Meregarth and Pybus Court would be completely refurbished to include thermal upgrades, sound insulation, modern internal finishes and high-speed internet."The intention was to have Meregarth ready in February," Mr Hazell said. "It's now looking like being into the autumn before we can have it done."
He said although surveys had been carried out, the building had been occupied at the time and surveys would not usually reveal some of the issues they had come across, such as the well.Asked if it would have been easier to knock the building down and start again, he said the authority had done that in the past.However, he added: "There is always a cut-off point and in this case we didn't quite reach that."With hindsight, he admitted it might have been the best solution.Work on Pybus Court is due to begin in the autumn after Meregarth is completed.Mr Hazell said the council did not envisage any further problems, Meanwhile, in Bridlington another sheltered accommodation complex looks set to be demolished to make way for 56 new apartments for the over 60s.Plans have been submitted to bulldoze Chantry Court off Lawson Road. The new apartments would feature solar panels, a communal garden and digital telecare equipment as a means of contacting the council for support.

Czech billionaire Kretinsky named chairman of Royal Mail after takeover
Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky is to become chairman of Royal Mail after completing the £3.6 billion takeover of the postal service. Mr Kretinsky's EP Group said that, following the closure of the deal earlier this month, he would head up the board as chairman of both Royal Mail and its parent company International Distribution Services (IDS). Confirmation of the appointment came after IDS formally left the London Stock Exchange on June 2 after being taken over by Mr Kretinsky. In April, shareholders approved the £3.6 billion takeover deal, giving the more than 500-year-old company a foreign owner for the first time. Royal Mail's new owner also said on Friday that it had issued a £1 so-called golden share to the UK Government, as agreed under the deal. The golden share means the firm must keep Royal Mail's headquarters and tax residency in the UK. EP added that it has changed Royal Mail's articles of association to include the rights of the Government, and to set up an advisory committee in line with pledges made to trade unions the Communication Workers Union and Unite, as well as the Competition and Markets Authority. EP Group recently appointed former UK trade minister Greg Hands as a full-time strategic adviser. Mr Hands, who was minister for trade policy until last summer when he lost his seat in the House of Commons, will advise the business with a 'special focus on the UK and Germany'. Mr Kretinsky – dubbed the Czech Sphinx – agreed the deal to buy Royal Mail's owner in May last year, but it was not cleared until December after he made a raft of commitments over the future of the service and its workers. He was already the biggest shareholder in IDS, which also owned parcel business GLS, prior to the deal.

Ruud van Nistelrooy leaves Leicester by ‘mutual' consent after relegation from Premier League
Ruud van Nistelrooy has left Leicester City by 'mutual' consent, the club said on Friday, after the Dutchman oversaw a disastrous second half to the season that ended in relegation from the Premier League. Van Nistelrooy replaced Steve Cooper at the end of November, joining the Foxes on a deal that was set to last until June 2027. However, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid striker was unable to improve the club's fortunes. A dismal run culminated in relegation, and now Leicester and Van Nistelrooy, 48, have 'mutually agreed' to end their partnership. A club statement released on Friday (27 June) read: 'Leicester City Football Club and Ruud van Nistelrooy have mutually agreed that Ruud's contract with the Club as First Team Manager will terminate with immediate effect. 'Ruud has overseen a challenging period for the Club. From his appointment in November 2024, he approached the role with professionalism, integrity and a clear commitment to our aims, including through the integration of several promising players from the Club's Academy into our First Team environment. 'Ruud moves on with the respect and thanks of everyone at the Football Club for his dedication and hard work, and with our very best wishes for the future. Preparation for the EFL Championship season will continue with the planned start of pre-season on Monday 30 June. First Team coaching staff will oversee the delivery of those plans until a new manager is will be no further comment until this process has been completed.' Van Nistelrooy said: 'I would like to personally thank the Leicester City players, coaches, academy and all the staff I have worked with for their professionalism and dedication during my time at the Club and to thank the fans for their support, and take this opportunity to wish the Club well for the future.'
