Mario Kart World Makes Racing Wilder and More Social Than Ever

Mario Kart World Makes Racing Wilder and More Social Than Ever

CNETa day ago

The Nintendo Switch 2 has already become Nintendo's fastest-selling console ever, moving 3.5 million units in its first four days on sale. And while the new Switch makes it easy to upgrade your old games for its bigger screen and better graphics, the real reason everyone is so excited to get their hands on it: a new version of Mario Kart.
You can get the bundle that includes the Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart World now at Best Buy. (If you aren't able to buy it online, check your local Best Buy store; the retailer limited online stock to prevent scalping.)
A rainbow road that never ends
Mario Kart World's coolest innovation is Free Roam mode, designed for those hungry to explore the universe outside of lap-based races. Think The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild or Grand Theft Auto, but with Super Mario characters in cars. Drive a few seconds in any direction and you'll find a P-switch, which initiates a short mini-game. ("Hitch a ride on the train," for example, when there's a locomotive in front of you.)
Nintendo
In Knockout Tour and Versus modes, the courses melt into each other like a cinematic one-shot. We're a long way from the Nintendo 64 days, when you could get stuck at the edge of the map, staring into the digital fog.
More racers, more chaos
But let's be honest: you're playing Mario Kart to race friends. Multiplayer mode in Mario Kart World expands the field to up to 24 drivers, which means wide lanes and total chaos.
Nintendo
Purists may think there are just too many characters this go-around; why would you choose the lesser-known Dry Bones or Lakitu when you have all-stars like Mario and Luigi, Toad and Yoshi, Bowser and Peach? (They may be quickly convinced when they start dominating with Cow.) And the classics are still there: Toad, it turns out, is voiced by the original spokesman for Nintendo in the 1990s: Paul Rudd.
Knockout Tour mode adds another (cutthroat) wrinkle to the new stampede-style races: some players are eliminated after each race.
Play together, wherever you are
Nintendo paid attention to the gamers who joined a Discord call or fired up a Zoom room to (trash) talk with friends while playing video games, especially during the pandemic. (Basically, a LAN party that isn't in your parents' basement.) For $55 you can buy a Switch 2 camera that connects via a new USB-C port located on the top of the console. The GameChat feature admits 12 audio friends or 4 video friends in a "chatroom." And for those who want their gaming grounded in some sort of reality, meatspace faces can appear next to a racer's kart so you can see real-time reactions.
Get your Nintendo Switch 2 with Mario Kart World at Best Buy
Mario Kart World is available now with the Nintendo Switch 2, which you can get today at Best Buy. If you can't find it online, be sure to check your local Best Buy, where they've kept plenty of stock available in person to keep it from being scalped.

3 PlayStation Plus games to play this weekend (June 13-15)

After the State of Play last week, followed by all the Summer Game Fest announcements, PlayStation fans have tons of upcoming PS5 games to look forward to. The only downside is we can't play them right now. That's where my weekly PS Plus game recommendations come in to save the weekend. This time around, I wanted to mix things up by celebrating Friday the 13th as well as give you some games to wet your appetites for a few of the more exciting game announcements. I've crammed in a classic multiplayer game, brutal single-player adventure, and cult classic strategy title here to cover as many bases as possible. Dead by Daylight Because the official Friday the 13th game has been shut down, I am turning to the next best thing to celebrate this unlucky holiday. Dead by Daylight started out with very clear homages to iconic movie slasher Killers, but eventually got the rights to use tons of official characters like Freddy, Ghostface, and Leatherface. Sadly, the one glaring omission is Jason. Even so, this is an amazing multiplayer horror game, whether you're one of the struggling survivors or a lethal killer hunting them down. It has been a huge hit with fans for over 10 years now so it must be doing something right. This is a great game you can play for just a night or two for some quick spooky fun, or get deep into the progression and play for months. Recommended Videos Dead by Daylight is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, Mobile, and PC. Nioh Out of all the announcements from the State of Play this week, I don't think anyone saw Nioh 3 coming. Now that Souls-like games are bigger than ever, I can't wait to see how Team Ninja is evolving the formula, but also think this is the best time to go back and hone my skills in the original. From a gameplay perspective, Nioh still feels amazing. It has the speed of a game like Sekiro or Bloodborne, but with some great twists like the stance system and abundance of loot. The one aspect that might feel a little dated after Elden Ring is the level-based structure, but that also gives it a much more approachable feel; you can dive in for one mission and feel accomplished or take on a dozen. If you've been sleeping on one of the best Souls-like franchises, now is the time to give it a shot. Nioh is available now on PS4, PS5, and PC. Jeanne d'Arc There was a small but passionate group out there who went wild when Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles was revealed. If you are one of them, you know there hasn't been anything that has quite scratched that same tactics itch since this classic title all those years ago. Now that we know it is coming, we need something to hold us over, right? That's where the PSP gem Jeanne d'Arc comes in to save the day. Not only is this a criminally underplayed tactics game, but it is also considered to be almost on the same level as Final Fantasy Tactics. Tactics lovers will find a wealth of gameplay options to tinker with, plus a gripping story that puts a magical twist on historical events. Jeanne d'Arc is available now on PS4 and PS5.

Today's ‘Wordle' #1455 Hints, Clues And Answer For Friday, June 13th

How to solve today's Wordle. Looking for Thursday's Wordle hints, clues and answer? You can find them here: Today is both 2XP Friday — so be sure to double your points and losses if you play Competitive Wordle — and Friday the 13th, which bodes ill for your guessing game today. Weirdly, I did pretty good and got very lucky, which makes me question if this Friday the 13th business is at all legit. In any case, let's solve this Wordle and get ready for the weekend! The Hint: In the hull. The Clue: This Wordle ends with a vowel. Okay, spoilers below! The answer is coming! FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder . . . Today's Wordle Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here. I went ahead and used one of the Wordle Bot's favorite openers today, and SLATE turned out to be a pretty great guess. Just 29 words remained, and only five after CHOIR, though five is generally a bad outcome for guess #2. I could think of two words that began with 'B' at this point, so I went ahead and guessed BILGE (instead of BIBLE which has two B's). Lucky for me—and on such an unlucky day—that was the Wordle! Today's Wordle Bot It is perhaps fitting that today is the day the tides turn on our June score, what with the nautical Wordle. I get 1 point for guessing in three and 1 for beating the Bot (again) and double that for a total of 4 points for 2XP Friday. The Bot loses 1 point for guessing to me and gets 0 for guessing in four. Double that to -2 and our totals become: Erik: 10 points Wordle Bot: 7 points The word bilge comes from Middle English bulge meaning "ship's hull," which itself derives from Old French bouge meaning "leather bag, pouch" and from Latin bulga meaning "leather bag or sack." Over time, bilge came to refer to the lowest part inside a ship's hull where water collects. Let me know how you fared with your Wordle today on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. A Tabletop Games Gift Guide For Geeky Dads On Father's Day

You might not be able to afford a real Battlemech for your dad this Father's Day but you can help ... More them learn how to fix one. Having a geeky dad can make Father's Day easier. Beyond the traditional ties and cologne, they will likely be interested in comic books, collectibles and tabletop games. For anyone still looking for Dungeons and Dragons loving dad gift ideas, I'm here to the last minute rescue. The following list shies away from specific games for the most part and leans into accessories and other items that enhance the games dad likely already has. I came up with a similar list for Mother's Day that also can work for this gift holiday too. Evaluation copies of the items on this list were provided by the manufacturers. Heroscape is the only game that appears on both lists. It's a very light miniatures battle game that pulls from multiple genres. Players build forces and battlefields made of interlocking hex pieces for a different game experience every time. But it serves another function for gift purposes with terrain that's easy to assemble, deploy and store. Renegade Game Studios sells several packs of just terrain that expands options for their game as well as other miniatures based games. Many of my nerd friends kept their Heroscape from its original release for this very purpose and are excited there's new compatible accessories on the horizon. Monster Fight Club manufactures a lot of terrain options. The company is best known for its Cyberpunk RED Combat Zone game. One of the easy ways to expand that game is to pick up a pack or two of their Container sets. These boxes offer cover during a firefight as well as a sweet vantage point for the snipers in your crew. FEATURED | Frase ByForbes™ Unscramble The Anagram To Reveal The Phrase Pinpoint By Linkedin Guess The Category Queens By Linkedin Crown Each Region Crossclimb By Linkedin Unlock A Trivia Ladder These containers look good in almost any modern or futuristic game setup. For fans who want a more detailed look to their cityscapes, Monster Fight Club has a Kickstarter running until June 28th, 2025 for Monsteropolis 2.0. The Kickstarter looks to fulfill next year around this time, but there's nothing like getting the jump on next year's present. There's a common misperception that miniature games require a massive amount of time and money to play. Everyone must start somewhere. Black Site Studios offers a suite of games that can be played with any miniature, though they do offer ones for fans of their games that can be painted and even printed at home. I recently played Don't Look Back which is a cooperative game where players face off against an 80s style movie slasher in a variety of scenarios. I really enjoyed the killer's ability to jump out from behind any bit of scenery which made the game feel like a face-off with Jason or Freddy. Cooperative games are also great for families to play together, although the subject matter of Don't Look Back might be a better fit for adult kids to play with their dad. Paizo, the publisher of Pathfinder, is very good at making accessories that fabs love. Their flagship game can be intimidating but they work hard to make it accessible. The company also invests in great art for its books that really bring Golarion to life. These two elements come together in the boxed set of Pathfinder Monster Core Battle Cards. Over 550 tarot-sized cards feature the monster art on one side and the stat block on the other. They are perfect for in game reference or flipping through for encounter inspiration. Many dads have dedicated spaces to their gaming hobby. Much of it is likely taken up by game boxes, paint supplies and all the stuff needed to make the game experience most satisfying. Let's end this round-up with a suggestion on decor. Battletech: Technical Blueprints contains four blueprints of some of the most popular mechs suitable for framing. The Mad Cat, Dire Wolf, Phoenix Hawk and Warammer add futuristic flair to any gaming room. Each print is on heavy poster stock with dimensions of 24' x 36'. These products can be found online, directly from the vendors or at Friendly Local Gaming Stores around the world.
