21 Crew Rescued After Liberian Container Ship Tilts Off Kochi Coast
Twenty-one crew members were rescued after the Liberia-flagged container vessel MSC ELSA 3 developed a severe 26-degree tilt on Saturday, approximately 38 nautical miles southwest (Nm SW) of Kochi.
As of 8.00 pm, 21 crew members had been rescued, and three crew members (Captain, Chief Engg, and 2nd Engg) remained onboard to facilitate planned salvage operations.
Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ships and aircraft continue to coordinate and monitor the situation. Some containers have fallen overboard due to the vessel's tilt.
According to officials, "Risk assessment is in progress. All efforts are being made to maintain the vessel's stability."
The 184-metre-long ship had departed Vizhinjam Port on May 23 and was en route to Kochi when the incident occurred on Saturday, May 24.
Around 1.25 pm, the vessel's operator, MSC Ship Management, informed Indian authorities about the incident and sought immediate assistance.
The ICG swiftly initiated rescue efforts, deploying ships and aircraft in the vicinity to provide aerial support.
To support the evacuation process, ICG aircraft have dropped additional liferafts near the distressed container ship.
The Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping), in coordination with the Coast Guard, has directed the vessel's managers to arrange for urgent salvage services to stabilise the situation.

For the past three years, the department of posts actively participated in the public service of Yaksha Sambhrama, and this year it set a new record by providing this facility to 2,158 artistes in a single day. A special feature was that all these artistes received their policy bonds printed on-site. This postal accident insurance is a service offered by the Indian postal department, India Post Payments Bank, and Reliance Insurance Company. For an annual premium of just Rs 550, it provides coverage of Rs 10 lakh, along with benefits like inpatient/outpatient treatment and reimbursement of educational expenses. This year, the Yakshadhruva Patla Foundation Trust sponsored this facility for artistes at a cost of approximately Rs 11.9 lakh. The Patla Foundation organised several schemes for the welfare of artistrs, and the postal accident insurance scheme was widely appreciated. For the third consecutive year, the responsibility of conducting this initiative was entrusted to the fepartment by the yrust's gounder President, Patla Satish Shetty. Kanniyakumari collector holds meeting with Indian maritime experts
Kanniyakumari District Collector R. Alagumeena convened a meeting with Indian maritime experts at the district collectorate on Wednesday, regarding the impacts on the Arabian sea following the sinking of a cargo vessel off the Kochi coast. Speaking at the meeting the collector noted that the district comprises 42 coastal villages spread across a coastline of 71.05 km. Since May 27, debris including the plastic pellets (nurdles) , wooden logs, cashew nuts, iron rods have been washing ashore in the several coastal villages of Kanniyakumari district. Following the guidelines provided by Kerala State Disaster Management Authority, officials from the departments of Pollution Control Board, Revenue, Fisheries, Fire and Rescue service have been actively involved in clearing the debris along the coastline. The collected materials are safely stored at respective block and municipal offices. The collector also mentioned that she had conducted discussions with coastal police officials from Gujarat, as well as the Gujarat based agency engaged in debris clearance operations along the coast. In line with this, a meeting was held with maritime experts and officials of insurance company to assess the impacts in the Arabian sea region. During the meeting the collector also sought information regarding the procedures involved in rescue operations of the sunken cargo vessel MSC ELSA 3.
