PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) – For the 65th year, the Kiwanis Club of Panama City will be cooking up flapjacks in support of area children during their annual 'Pancake Days'.
Volunteers with the club were on the grill this morning, but there are still a few more opportunities to come out and satisfy your stomach.
For just $7 a person, you can fill your plate with as many pancakes and sausages as you like while drinking as much coffee and orange juice as your heart desires.
The club also provides you with the option to sit down to enjoy your meal or take it with you on the go.

All the proceeds from the pancake days will benefit Bay County children in a number of different ways.
'The primary focus of Kiwanis is youth, and obviously we support the key clubs in the high schools, probably a lot of former key club clubs out there watching,' said Kiwanis Club of Panama City Lieutenant Governor Jake Cook. 'Then we have our mini grant program. So any organization that benefits the children of Bay County they can put in a mini grant to us. It's a one-page form, takes 5 minutes, and we give out grants up to $500.'
The Kiwanis Club of Panama City will be dishing out pancakes at Forest Park Church on Friday, April 4th between 6 and 9 a.m., and from 7 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 5th.
You can also enter a raffle for an electric bike when you show up on Friday or Saturday.

Kiwanis set new record with Pancake Day fundraiser

May 9—The Decatur Kiwanis Club broke the record for money raised with its Pancake Day fundraising event for the second year in a row. It raised a total of $150,421 at this year's fundraising event on Feb. 22. This surpasses the record set last year by more than $15,000. "It is truly, truly remarkable the effort that these men and women put forth to try to raise as much money as possible to help the organizations that are represented here today," said Kiwanis Pancake Day Chairman Mark Waters upon announcing the total amount raised at a meeting honoring the funding recipients on Thursday. "It's just a passion project for this club ... so we're very, very thankful." The total amount distributed Thursday was $113,560, after removing costs of hosting Pancake Day and other special project funding used throughout the year. Forty-four area organizations received checks. The majority of the recipients were represented. A line snaked along the two walls of the ballroom of the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Decatur Riverfront, where the luncheon was held, as recipients were called up. Each year, the Kiwanians choose a signature project, which they distribute a higher amount to and rally fundraising efforts behind. The club plans to give $34,500 to the city of Decatur Parks and Recreation Department for the purchase of new benches. The club chose the project to honor former Decatur mayor and active Kiwanis member Lynn Fowler, whose goal was to install new benches throughout the city. Fowler died in May 2023. "He was a force of nature for raising money for kids," Waters said. "... Even when he was in the hospital, he was on the phone talking to people about raising money." The City Council needs to vote on whether the department can accept the funding, but Aaron Lang, operations for Decatur Parks and Rec, said that should not persent a problem. Each bench costs about $3,000, so the department should be able to purchase 12 benches. Each bench will be made of wrought iron, painted black and have a bronze plaque honoring a Kiwanis sponsor. "Everyone is very excited to continue the standard that Lynn Fowler set out for us," Lang said, noting that Fowler started the project of installing new benches years ago. Lang said the goal would be to convert all benches in the city to the same style, and Founders Park and Rhodes Ferry Park will likely have highest priority for receiving new benches. Kiwanis President Darrell Wates said that the club serves as the organizer for the Pancake Day events, but many people come together to make it possible. "Last year, we set a record, and this year, we blew it out of the water," Wates said. "... So many people pour out, and the community pours out. We kind of are the method for it to run through, but it's a community thing." Around 4,000 people attended Pancake Day this year, the 59th year the event has been held. The club began selling T-shirts last year in addition to the Pancake Day meal tickets. Wates said the money from the T-shirt sponsorships, profits from their sale, and the ability to spread the word for the event through the shirts helped contribute to a more successful fundraiser. Next week, Kiwanis will award $6,000 in scholarships to local students, also using the funds from Pancake Day. — or 256-340-2437

Bay district schools' Eduardo Anastacio is a finalist for statewide award

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Eduardo Anastacio has been named a finalist for the Florida School-Related Employee of the Year. Anastacio is a language assistant at Patronis Elementary. He works one-on-one with students, transitioning to U.S. schools from other countries, to learn English. 'We need people here in Florida especially in this area that speaks more than one language to help all those that come. And, you know, it's it's tough for them knowing no English, and they have to come and interact with everybody. So I'm the middle man. I help them to do this, I'm the bond,' Anastacio said. Holmes County Jail seeks funds for expansion project Back in December, Anastacio was recognized as support employee of the year for Bay District. His principal says she knew from the moment he started working there that he would change the lives of his students. 'They just follow and they hang on his every word. And that is so important in a teacher that they want to hear everything he has to say. And they play and they learn. And that's a great combo. So to watch him work is just an incredible experience. I'm proud to be a part of that,' Patronis Elementary Principal Brooke Loyed said. Anastacio works one on one with students every day but once the bell rings, his day isn't even close to being over. He is currently part of the Bay District Scholars program, which helps current paraprofessionals go back to school for free to get their education degree. So after he spends the day with his students, he helps clean up the school, and then heads over to Gulf Coast State College to attend his classes. Anastacio says getting his degree will help him further help students in the classroom. Lane closures on US 331 northbound for resurfacing project 'I always dreamed to come to America and have a better life. Sounds like cliche, but it's not. And I remember my friends saying, you're not going to live Brazil. Yes, I will one day. Here I am doing the right thing, helping kids, taking kids and being a nice person to the community,' Anastacio said. Anastacio will represent Bay District at the state competition, coming up later this year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
