'He could be one of the best ever': Rob Key's big comment on Jofra Archer

NEW DELHI: Allaying concerns about
Jofra Archer
's readiness for Test cricket, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) director Rob Key has said that the pacer could have been brought back much earlier, but the decision was made to allow him time to gradually build up for the demands of the longest format.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan and Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace had both advised against rushing Archer into the second Test against India at Edgbaston, despite his recent return to red-ball cricket. Archer, who has not played a Test since 2021, was named in England's squad after bowling 18 overs and taking a wicket in a four-day County match for Sussex against Durham.

"I think we've gone slower than we could have done," Key was quoted as saying by The Guardian.
"Jofra has been in a long period where he's been building up and building up (in white-ball cricket). The temptation could have been to rush him back sooner. But actually we've gone down this road to make sure that we're in this position now where we're thinking about playing him," he added.
England won the first Test at Headingley, but their pace attack lacked penetration despite the result. Archer, one of the standout bowlers in the recent IPL season, could provide the cutting edge England need—if he makes the final XI.

"He could be one of the best bowlers we have had. And you only do that by doing it in Test cricket. Hopefully for the next few years we'll be fortunate enough to see Jofra have the chance to stake that claim," said Key.
The ECB director also emphasised that England captain Ben Stokes would be well-placed to manage Archer's workload intelligently, keeping in mind his injury-prone history.

"These are impact players. You don't want them doing other roles.
That's where you need complementary skills, so you can share a bit more of the work. The temptation at times with Jofra is that he can do a bit of everything.
"But you've got to use him when he can impact the game and Ben (Stokes) is one of the best at that. You have got to be smart with how you use them so they can help you win a game," Key explained.

On Mark Wood, who has been out of action following knee surgery earlier this year, Key was optimistic about his return but did not specify a date.
Reports suggest that the speedster could be available for the fifth and final Test against India in late July.
"Wood is someone who could turn up after bowling a bit in the nets, like he did (in 2023), and it's 96mph, swinging the ball and hitting a length. We're very fortunate he has the ability to hit his straps pretty much from the start.
"Jofra is close to the Mark Wood end of the scale: a pretty pure talent, not a lot of moving parts to his action. He knows exactly what he is doing and what he is about," Key added.

Historic! Lhuan-dre Pretorious breaks 61-year record, becomes youngest South African centurion on Test debut
Lhuan-dre Pretorious (Pic credit: CSA) Teenage batting sensation Lhuan-dre Pretorious etched his name into South African cricket history on Saturday, becoming the youngest ever South African to score a Test century on debut. The 19-year-old achieved the feat during the first Test against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, breaking a 61-year-old record held by the legendary Graeme Pollock . Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Coming to the crease with South Africa reeling at 23 for 3, Pretorious displayed nerves of steel and a fearless approach, smashing an unbeaten 128 off just 141 deliveries by the end of the second session. His innings, laced with seven fours and four sixes, came at a brisk strike rate of 90.78 and helped steady a new-look Proteas side in early trouble. The young right-hander surpassed Pollock's long-standing milestone — set in 1964 when the iconic left-hander scored a century at 19 years and 317 days against Australia in Sydney. Pretorious, at just 19 years and 93 days, has now become the youngest centurion for South Africa in Test cricket. He also stitched together a crucial 95-run partnership for the fifth wicket with fellow debutant Dewald Brevis, who made an explosive 51 off 41 balls, including three fours and four sixes. Pretorious had been knocking on the national door after a stellar domestic season. He scored 436 runs in five matches during the 2024/25 CSA 4-Day Series at an average of 72.66, including three centuries. He had also impressed in the SA20 league earlier this year, scoring 397 runs in 12 matches for the Paarl Royals. At tea, South Africa reached 248 for 6, with Pretorious (128*) and Corbin Bosch (22*) holding the fort. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story. Watch Episode 2 here.

Lhuan-dre Pretorius becomes youngest South African to score Test century, breaks several records for WTC champions
Jun 28, 2025 07:38 PM IST Lhuan-dre Pretorius marked a memorable debut for South Africa in Test cricket, bringing up a century in the Proteas' match against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. It was a record-setting century by the dynamic young South African, becoming his nation's youngest ever centurion, as well as joining the list of the youngest players to score a century on Test debut at just 19 years old. Lhuan-dre Pretorius celebrates his century in Bulawayo against Zimbabwe, at just 19 years of age.(X) Pretorius came in with South Africa in trouble at 23/3, Tanaka Chivanga having taken all three wickets to start off the innings. The exciting southpaw batter, who was signed up by Rajasthan Royals in the IPL as a replacement, began to counter-punch and rebuild the innings. It was his 95-run partnership with another debutant in Dewald Brevis that saw both players show their immense potential, taking only 88 deliveries as they took the innings away from Zimbabwe. At 19 years and 93 days, Pretorius is the 10th youngest centurion in the history of Test cricket, and the fifth youngest to register a century on debut. Pretorius also broke a 61-year record of the youngest South African player to have scored a Test match century, breaking the record set in 1964 by one of the country's great cricketers, Graeme Pollock. Test cricket gets better for South Africa with future stars Pretorius' innings finished on 153 off just 160 deliveries, his stand finally being brought to an end by Chivanga, after an innings that saw him score 11 fours and smoke four maximums. No player has scored more runs than his tally at a younger age, making him the youngest player to score 150 runs in Test history by breaking Javed Miandad's record. The left-hander, who top-scored in the 2025 season of the SA20 to break-through in the Protean circuit, continued to deliver on the promise despite batting out of position from his regular opening role in domestic cricket. Pretorius is seen as a top prospect for a country that raised the ICC Mace with the World Test Championship victory, and his presence alongside Dewald Brevis (51 on debut) will be a big boost to a country that will receive a very good headache to have in terms of the batters they will need to choose in the near future.
