'I want to give Saints fans some cheer'

BBC News27-02-2025

If you asked someone from Southampton about sporting success for the city on a European stage, then they might mention that famous night against Inter Milan in 2016. Or maybe Southampton sprinter Iwan Thomas racing his way to two European gold medals. On Saturday night boxer Ryan Garner has a shot at European success himself as he fights for the vacant European super-featherweight title. "It still doesn't feel real, the support and the build-up," he told BBC Sport. "It doesn't feel real to be headlining my own show, I don't think I'm that big time yet."Three or four years ago this wasn't something that I thought would have even been possible."Garner takes on fellow unbeaten boxer Salvador Jimenez, from Spain, at the Bournemouth International Centre. As well as being for the vacant European title, Garner will also defend the WBC International belt. The 27-year-old earned the opportunity to headline after his most recent win over Londoner Archie Sharp at the O2 Arena. Garner's promoter Frank Warren teased the possibility that they would have to put on a show for his fans on the south coast. The Bournemouth International Centre's Windsor Hall - which holds up to 4,000 people - is expected to be at capacity for the main event on Saturday."The support has been incredible," Garner said."A lot of people from Southampton are backing and supporting me, even people I don't know, which is quality."He added: "There's not many people up and down the country that can do ticket sales like we have been doing. "It goes to show that everyone is behind me and believing in me, all I have to do now is repay their faith and become European champ."
The backing of Southampton FC
One of Garner's big supporters has been Southampton FC, with the club often posting about him on social media and bringing attention to his big wins and upcoming fights. They have previously brought him out at St Mary's Stadium to address the crowd, and recently invited Garner to the training ground to speak with the players and coaches. "When I was about 11 years old I actually used to play for Southampton in their youth teams," Garner said."It's massive to be supported by the club as I am, they're right behind me. It's quality to have my childhood football club following me and helping me."They want to push for me to fight at St Mary's in the summer, it's all there for me, and on Saturday I have to grab it with both hands." On the pitch, Southampton have been far from impressive this season in the Premier League. They sit bottom of the table with nine points from 27 matches. "I feel like the Saints fans need something to get behind this season," Garner added."There's a lot of people that aren't happy with Saints at the moment as we aren't doing very well, so people might be looking at me as doing something good for the city."With my success people have started to watch, and I feel as if the city wants a good night out and I believe my style is the exciting kind to give them that."Garner will be attempting to extend his unbeaten record to 17 wins against Jimenez. His opponent, who has a record of 14 wins and one draw, is fighting outside of Spain for the first time."I have no doubt in my mind that I'm going to win this fight, there is bigger and better things on the horizon and this is a big opportunity for me," Garner said."I believe I'm meant to go on and win the European title and go on to fight at St Mary's, I have to do my part now."I have no doubt in my mind that it is going to be an exciting fight and one that I'm going to win convincingly."

Man Utd target Bryan Mbeumo makes Thomas Frank claim amid Spurs transfer battle

Manchester United target Bryan Mbeumo is also wanted by Tottenham now that Thomas Frank is in charge and the Cameroon star feels his ex-Brentford boss will thrive at his new club Bryan Mbeumo has tipped Thomas Frank to be a huge hit at Tottenham during an impromptu interview at the Canadian Grand Prix - but he did not discuss the battle for his signature between Spurs and Manchester United. The Cameroon star, 25, is wanted by both clubs with a summer exit from Brentford now likely. It's understood that United is Mbeumo's preferred destination with the Red Devils in desperate need of reinforcements after enduring their worst ever Premier League campaign. ‌ They have so far failed to meet Brentford's valuation of the player and the situation has been complicated by Frank's move to Spurs. ‌ Mirror Football revealed prior to the weekend that they have launched a £70million bid to try and make Mbeumo their marquee summer signing by gazumping their rivals. And while Mbeumo did not discuss interest from the two clubs in Montreal, he did endorse Frank to do a stellar job at his new club. "He's done so much for me," Mbeumo told Sky Sports when he was asked how influential Frank has been during his career. "He literally trusted me from the start [at Brentford] and he developed the team so well. He developed me as a human and a player so much as well. I can only wish him all the best and I'm sure he's going to do well." He added: "He knows everything; he's really smart and knows what he wants to bring the team, how he wants them to play. He's been fantastic for Brentford." ‌ Mbeumo is hot property after breaking the 20-goal barrier in the Premier League for the first time last season, helping Brentford to a 10th place finish. Crucially, the Bees are not expected to prevent their star man after his stellar campaign, though it remains unclear where he will end up with the summer transfer window set to reopen on Monday. The versatile forward feels he is currently at the peak of his powers, adding: "I think it's been my best season so far in the Premier League. Even collectively, I think we played very good and were unlucky [to not get] a European spot." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Liverpool chiefs fear Trent Alexander-Arnold repeat as Real Madrid eye new deal

Real Madrid have signed Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool this summer and are now reportedly looking to line up a move for one of his former teammates next summer Real Madrid are reportedly plotting a swoop for another Liverpool star after signing Trent Alexander-Arnold. The England international joined Madrid after running down his contract at Anfield, with the LaLiga giants paying £10million to release him from his deal early so he could feature at the Club World Cup. Madrid have signed a number of players in similar situations to Alexander-Arnold in recent years, which has allowed them to avoid shelling out huge transfer fees. Kylian Mbappe joined on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain last summer, while David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger also signed from Bayern Munich and Chelsea respectively after their deals expired. ‌ And according to a new report from Spanish outlet Marca, Madrid are looking to repeat this trick again with Alexander-Arnold's former Liverpool teammate Ibrahima Konate. The centre-back's current deal is due to expire in 2026 and he is yet to agree terms over an extension. ‌ The report claims that Konate has 'already started the countdown on his contract' and has rejected Liverpool's latest offer of a new deal, with club chiefs fearing a repeat of the Alexander-Arnold saga. Konate spoke out about his future after Liverpool's final Premier League game last month, admitting he is unsure what will happen. "You know, I just want to say one thing: Everything you saw on social media is completely fake," he said. "I didn't even ask for something from the club. They made me an offer, and I replied to them with something, that is it. The rest (speculation) that I want to wait until the end...I want this, all of it is completely fake. "And even the big journalists said in November I am very close to signing the deal. I was like: 'Ah, they have more information than me!?' Because it was not true at that moment and that is why I was a little bit mad because it was not true at this moment. "I knew at one moment people would think I didn't want to sign the contract but I was never close to signing it. We will see what will happen. First thing, I am very happy because we have won the Premier League trophy and we lifted it today. ‌ "We have to enjoy it, have a rest and hopefully next season will be better than this. I didn't expect the [contract] question this way! (laughs) But you are smart, you're smart. To be fair, to win a trophy, even when I won my first trophy with Liverpool, the FA Cup, was just amazing. "And today, to win the Premier League, I know I have a lot of objectives with this club: to become a leader, to win everything. I am very happy here to be fair, you know. But I know where you want to go with this question and this is another conversation with the club and my agent, we will see what will happen in the next few weeks or I don't know when but we will see, let me say that. "Progressing? Not really but my agent met the club last week but I don't know what will happen. I cannot say what my agent said to me but yeah, we will see what will happen."

Enzo Maresca left with huge Chelsea calls ahead of Club World Cup opportunity

Chelsea will represent the Premier League in the FIFA Club World Cup off the back of winning the Europa Conference League and there is plenty of intrigue surrounding Enzo Maresca's side Enzo Maresca has already won a European trophy and booked a place in next season's Champions League. But in reality, Maresca is still only on par. While no-one would admit it publicly, it would have been a failure if Chelsea had not lifted the Europa Conference League trophy and getting back on European football's biggest stage was always the target. And yet the Club World Cup offers not just the incentive of a £97m jackpot for the winners but also a huge opportunity for Chelsea. This could be the tournament which puts them back among the elite and, almost as importantly, gives them a chance to start shaping their future. This is also about what Chelsea can get out of this tournament as a squad. ‌ When appointing Maresca last year, the club made it clear they viewed the 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons almost as two years rolled into one. ‌ Why? The unique nature of the Club World Cup threw up a new challenge but also a big opportunity. They have spent big ahead of the tournament in the United States, adding Mike Penders, Mamadou Sarr, Dario Essugo and Liam Delap and putting them straight into their 28 man squad for the Club World Cup. They spent £30m on Delap and now comes the question over whether he can challenge Nicolas Jackson to be the club's first choice No9. Jackson can be rash, unreliable and temperamental as getting sent off at Newcastle in the run-in proved. But he is also strong, improving and, for Senegal against England, he has shown big potential. Now comes Delap who was sought-after by a string of clubs and it now remains to be seen whether he is good enough to win his place as first choice or provide the sort of competition which Jackson needs to focus his mind. The line-ups in the United States - starting against Los Angeles FC in Atlanta on Monday - should be very revealing about that striker dynamic. ‌ Equally, the keeper issue is yet to be resolved. They were so adamant that Robert Sanchez was going to stay No1, had the club's full backing - and yet then went for AC Milan keeper Mike Maignan. They could not get a deal done but may yet revisit it but stressed it was an opportunity which popped up. However, it still reveals that there are doubts over the keeper issue and they do have a young gem in Mike Penders who has been out on loan but is highly-regarded. ‌ Chelsea's Filip Jörgensen played the Conference League final but there can be no doubt that a convincing No1 would really improve the whole team and give the team more confidence. What happens in the United States should be really revealing on that front. Quite how far Chelsea go will also shape their plans for next season because they want to give players a break and yet the Premier League starts just five weeks after the Club World Cup final on July 13. ‌ That is a dilemma for a lot of clubs and managers. But the worry for Chelsea is that there is an acceptance they have still got ground to make up on Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City. But starting as a disadvantage while giving their main rivals a head start is exactly what Chelsea do not need. They must get the balance right between wanting to win but also being recharged and ready for next season. The other fascinating dynamic is that arguably Chelsea's most exciting young signing is playing at the Club World Cup - just not for them. They paid £29m for Estevao Willian who was courted by every big club in Europe. Chelsea landed him but allowed him to stay at Palmeiras for another year and the Brazilian club are in Group A. There will be a lot of excitement about this 18-year-old and it could catch light in the United States. He is so skilful, such a terrific dribbler and is hugely entertaining.
