Why is Al Nassr not part of FIFA Club World Cup? Explained

Mint20 hours ago

The FIFA Club World Cup is set to begin on June 15 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. The revamped tournament will feature 32 teams, generating massive excitement. However, one notable absence is Al Nassr, the Saudi Pro League club that gained worldwide attention after Cristiano Ronaldo's inclusion.
Despite their recent success, including an AFC Champions League title in 2023/24, the Knights of Najd won't be competing in the Club World Cup. Here's why.
The qualification for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup is based on a four-year continental performance ranking system. FIFA evaluated the club's results in their respective competitions, such as the AFC Champions League for Asian teams. Points were awarded based on achievements, with consistent success over multiple seasons being key.
Al Nassr fell short in this ranking. While their 2023/24 AFC Champions League victory was a high point, their overall performance across the four-year cycle didn't accumulate enough points to secure a spot. Other Asian clubs, with more consistent results in recent seasons, edged them out.
Al Nassr has been a strong contender in the Saudi Pro League, but their results haven't always been remarkable enough for the continental dominance.
Here's a look at their league finishes over the last four seasons:
Cristiano Ronaldo's arrival at Al Nassr in January 2023 was a game-changer. The club got more recognition across the world. Under his influence, Al Nassr won the 2023/24 AFC Champions League. Ronaldo's performances, including crucial goals, have been significant in their recent successes.
Following the announcement of the FIFA Club World Cup participants, Ronaldo took to social media with a cryptic message that raised speculation. In a post on X, he wrote, "This chapter is over. The story? Still being written. Grateful to all," the caption read, implying that his journey with Al-Nassr has ended.

From number four batting spot to pace attack, questions India must answer ahead of 1st Eng Test

New Delhi [India], June 13 (ANI): As India-England first Test draws closer, the Asian giants are left with plenty of questions to answer as they battle demons following a string of poor showings at home/away and retirements of some of their biggest superstars. India's first Test against England at Leeds from June 20 will mark the start of a new era under newly-appointed captain Shubman Gill, as he aims to lead a new-look team to glory following the retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Tests and Ravichandran Ashwin from international cricket as a whole. There are some questions they need to answer, some problems left unaddressed: -Who takes the burden of the crown at number four? For Team India, atleast, the number four spot is not a regular position. For long, it was occupied by legends like Sachin Tendulkar (13,492 runs in 177 Tests at an average of 54.40, with 44 centuries) and Virat Kohli (7,564 runs in 98 Tests at an average of 56.88, with 26 centuries). Rohit Sharma's top-order replacement looks clear, in the form of KL Rahul. There have been calls so far that Gill should take the number four spot. Though he succeeded at number three spot at home with three centuries and three fifties, he has been abysmal away from home. Even Karun Nair, who has returned to the national side after eight years, young Sai Sudharsan or in a highly left-field call, Dhruv Jurel, could become India's number four, as per Wisden. Gill and head coach stayed tight-lipped about the batting order during the pre-departure presser, saying that a call would be taken only after reaching the UK. -Five bowlers or less? During the Kohli captaincy era, the onus was on the main batters to do the talking and no cushion was given to them in the form of all-rounders. Five specialist bowlers were played, prioritising picking up 20 wickets at any cost, home or away, even if the batting line-up looked less deep. The captain-coach duo of Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid more or less continued with this. But there was some slight shift during Gautam Gambhir's tenure, particularly in Australia, when three specialist bowlers were played with three all-rounders. The idea to provide variety and depth was great, but it led to over-reliance on Jasprit Bumrah, as India lost the series 3-1 and also lost Bumrah to an injury ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy. Ahead of the England Tests, India do not have a perfect number eight. With Ravindra Jadeja playing at number seven, one of Shardul Thakur (331 runs in 11 Tests with four fifties and 31wickets at an average of 28.38) or Nitish Kumar Reddy (298 runs in five Tests with a century and five wickets at an average of 38.00) could play at number eight to improve batting depth. But it would lead to some compromises with the bowling. It looks interesting where India would go. -What does the lower-order look like? While India grapples with question of a proper top-order or their bowling attack, another question is, what would the number six, seven and eight would look like. Jadeja looks a certainty for number seven. But if India play Kuldeep Yadav as their spinner, as suggested by former Indian cricketer Sanjay Bangar, Nitish Kumar would be the one playing as an all-rounder and could bat at number seven, having batted there in Australia. Number six is a spot left open ever since KL Rahul has moved up the top. Dhruv Jurel has been on a hot-streak as of late, with half-centuries against Australia A and England Lions away from home. Sai Sudharan has notably, batted at number six as well. Nitish could also play at number six. At number eight, Shardul gives India a bit as a batter and is a solid pacer as well. But this spot is one too high for Kuldeep or any fourth quick. Reddy could drop down there, having some experience at this position too. Washington Sundar could also feature as a solid bat at number eight, though the quality of his spin bowling is not high as Jadeja and Kuldeep. India played Nitish, Kumar and Sundar in Australia as all-round options, will India continue with it? -Who will be the third pacer? Two of India's pacers, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, are more than confirmed to play, but Mohammed Shami is not in the squad and could have walked in as third. With a Purple Cap-winning season in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Prasidh Krishna looks a great option, having put in some solid contributions during tour to Australia, taking six wickets in one match at Sydney, three-fers in each innings. Arshdeep Singh, India's leading wicket-taker in T20Is, gives India a left-arm pace variation, while Shardul gives India some batting depth. Akash Deep was solid against England at home, but unlucky against Australia away from home. He has barely had any game time in months due to injury and did not play India A games against England Lions. His game time came during the IPL for Lucknow Super Giants, taking three wickets in six games. Harshit Rana, Anshul Kamboj and Mukesh Kumar are pacers from the India A team who are staying behind with the main squad. Kamboj is an interesting option, a canny, restrictive pacer who can bat as well, having made a fifty against England Lions in second game. The series will be held from June to August 2025, with matches scheduled at Headingley in Leeds, Edgbaston in Birmingham, Lord's and The Oval in London, and Old Trafford in Manchester. India's Test squad for England series: Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav. Who is Franco Mastantuono? Real Madrid's new 17-year-old record signing from River Plate

Real Madrid have officially signed Franco Mastantuono, the 17-year-old attacking midfielder from River Plate who has already made history in Argentine football. Mastantuono will join the Spanish club in August when he turns 18, following the FIFA Club World Cup, where he will still play for River Plate. The deal is worth €63.2 million (around ₹566 crore), making it the most expensive outgoing transfer in River Plate's history. Mastantuono's rise has been fast and exciting. He made his senior debut in January 2024 at just 16 years old and soon became the youngest goalscorer in River Plate history. He also netted in the Superclásico against Boca Juniors, becoming the youngest scorer in the rivalry. His standout moment came with a stunning free-kick goal from nearly 30 yards out, showing composure and technique well beyond his age. What makes Franco Mastantuono special? 🤩 #WelcomeMastantuono 🤩 Franco Mastantuono is not your typical winger. Despite being left-footed like Arjen Robben or Angel Di María, he plays more like a number 10. At River Plate, he starts as a second striker in a 4-4-2 system but drifts wide during transitions. His creativity, passing, and dribbling allow him to operate comfortably in tight spaces, similar to how Isco or Mesut Ozil once did for Real Madrid. What stands out most is his ability to receive the ball with his back to goal and turn into space with just one touch. He uses the outside of his left foot to escape pressure and either push forward or create space for a pass. Though he doesn't have Di María's raw pace, he shares the same technical finesse, balance, and close control. In his few appearances for Argentina's senior national team, he has shown confidence and maturity. In June 2025, he became the youngest player ever to feature in a competitive game for Argentina at just 17 years and 9 months. When will Franco Mastantuono join Real Madrid? 💎⚽✨#WelcomeMastantuono Franco Mastantuono's six-year deal with Real Madrid begins on August 14, his 18th birthday. Before that, he will compete with River Plate in the Club World Cup, giving fans one last glimpse of him in red before he switches to white. Real Madrid have now made three major signings this summer, with Mastantuono joining Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen as the latest new arrivals. Mastantuono follows in the footsteps of other Argentine stars who moved from River Plate to Real Madrid, including Gonzalo Higuain, Javier Saviola, and Santiago Solari. Time will tell whether he can match those names or even live up to the lofty comparisons with Lionel Messi. For now, Madridistas can watch closely during the Club World Cup, where Mastantuono's next few games may hint at how ready he is for the Bernabeu spotlight.

Atletico defender Le Normand unfazed by LA disturbances

Los Angeles, June 13 (UNI) Atletico Madrid's Spain international defender Robin Le Normand insisted he and his teammates were not worried by the ongoing disturbances in Los Angeles as they arrived in the city to open their Club World Cup campaign. Atletico plays newly crowned European champion Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday, but football isn't making the headlines in Los Angeles with the National Guard called onto some streets after protests against U.S. President Donald Trump's immigration policies. "We are in the hotel, so it doesn't really affect us, and we are concentrating on the tournament," Le Normand told the press shortly after Atletico arrived in the USA. The competition has been criticized as it will leave many players without much of a summer break, but Le Normand explained that although "everyone can see" the demands of the calendar, we are trying to work well and to recover." "It's clear there isn't much time to rest, but that's part of the game. I like watching football, being in the ground and I want to enjoy my career," commented the defender. "We all know PSG's quality and they have shown that this year, but we will compete against anyone, that's in our blood - we suffer, but we know how to suffer," he concluded. UNI/XINHUA BM
