Camo-clad stalker who knifed ex dead when she started new romance learns his fate

Daily Mirror25-04-2025

A twisted former doorman was today jailed for life with a minimum term of 27 years after he knifed his estranged wife to death when he refused to accept their relationship was over.
Paul Antony Butler, 53, stabbed university lecturer Claire Chick, 48, in a frenzied attack outside her home following a six-month campaign of stalking and harassment. Plymouth Crown Court heard the mother-of-two's murder was the culmination of months of harassment and violence at the hands of Butler. Jo Martin KC, prosecuting, said Plymouth University lecturer Ms Chick made six statements to the police about the defendant's conduct and he had been arrested three times for assault, harassment and stalking.
At one point desperate Ms Chick text a friend saying: "I wish he would just get on with it and put me out of my misery." Despite being on bail and banned from going near her, 6ft 5in Butler continued to stalk his 5ft 2in wife and even put a tracking device on her car, Ms Martin said.
When he learned she had formed a new relationship, he went to her flat wearing a camouflaged hooded top and waited for her to come out of the building.
He then attacked her in the street, stabbing her more than 20 times with a large kitchen knife he had bought hours earlier from a supermarket. A passing motorist described Butler as "really going for it," Ms Martin said.
Butler - who changed his Facebook status to "Stangray Strangler" in reference to Stangray Avenue where he lived - then fled the scene but not before chasing Ms Chick's new partner, Paul Maxwell, who had returned from a regular evening run and witnessed the murderous assault, shouting at him: "I'll f***ing do you too." Ms Chick was taken to Derriford Hospital but declared dead an hour after the attack.
The court heard they became neighbours in 2021 after Ms Chick moved into the street following the end of her first marriage. By the following summer they were a couple, and they married in June 2024.
"Prior to the wedding she expressed some doubts, and the honeymoon was the end of the relationship," Ms Martin said. "They had a huge argument. She told friends she regretted getting married and everything was about him.
"On August 23 she told him she wanted to live alone. He made it clear he would make her change her mind. He would tell her he loved her, make threats of violence and threaten suicide. He also expressed feelings of jealousy and thought she was seeing someone. He told her he was seeing other people in order to provoke jealousy."
With his escalating behaviour, Ms Chick contacted the police - telling officers in her final statement the day before she was killed: "I only feel that Butler will kill me if further action is not taken. I am in fear of leaving my house."
Ms Martin said: "After the relationship was over there was constant texting, the tracking of her car, placing the restriction on the sale of her house, threatening suicide. She felt that he had made her life hell. She did repeatedly tell him to leave her alone and she felt violated by him. Then on the day of her murder, going to her workplace to watch her. She believed he would murder her."
Ms Martin read out the victim impact statement from Ms Chick's father who spoke of how he heard the awful news that his "beautiful daughter" was "brutally and savagely murdered" by an "evil person who took her life". He described her as "generous and full of fun" "a good person who had a purpose to her life", with an "infectious laugh".
He wrote of his concerns for her when she called him in September 2024 following her separation from Butler where she said in her own words that "she was in a living hell". He said she told him she had called the police for help "several times", explaining to them that she was being followed and spied on. He said it "broke my heart over and over again" to hear the stress and torment in her voice.
He said Butler has "brutally killed the most beautiful human being" and had damaged so many lives, of her children, her grandchildren, friends and family. He told Butler he had "murdered my daughter and broken my heart... and you will go straight to hell".
At a previous hearing, Butler, of Stangray Avenue, Plymouth, pleaded guilty to murder and possession of a bladed article.

They decided to investigate a suspect believed to be armed at 9.50pm. The suspect fled on foot into a nearby apartment as cops ran behind, according to Chicago Police Department Supt. Larry Snelling. When police entered the apartment, another person pointed a rifle at them. An officer discharged his weapon during the confrontation leading Rivera to be shot, Snelling said. As she was being transported to the local hospital, the police vehicle reportedly caught fire and as a result, Rivera had to be put in another car, according to Snelling. She was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said. Another officer suffered a wrist injury, requiring hospitalization, according to Fox 32 Chicago. Dozens of police officers and firefighters paid their respects, walking in procession at 3am from the hospital to the Cook County Medical Examiners Office. He added: 'She was a hero, and she lost her life tragically doing the job that she loved. 'That was one of the things that her mother said, she loved her job, and the way that she worked.' In an Instagram post, the Chicago Fire Department posted a picture of the tragic officer, saying she 'made the ultimate sacrifice in service' to the city. According to Snelling, two people inside the apartment fled the apartment but were taken into custody soon after. He added that 'several individuals" are in custody, as three weapons were recovered from the scene. Police and the Chicago Office of Police Accountability, which assesses incidents that involve officers firing weapons, are conducting an investigation. Speaking about Rivera, Snelling said: 'She had already processed two other guns working that day. 'She was a working police officer trying to keep the street safe. And she did great work. "And if you talk to anyone on her team, they would tell you how great of a worker she was. "This is the risk that our officers take every single day.' Snelling added that "this happens way too often", saying: "An officer, a young officer, 36-years-old and four years on the job. Who was working hard… these officers are out here driving down crime while putting their lives at risk. 'I want everyone to keep this officer's family in your prayers and understand the risk that she took every single day when she came out to do her job.' Police are reportedly issuing a search warrant for the apartment, and a forensic investigation is said to be underway in the apartment 7 'This happens way too often,' said Snelling Credit: Facebook

Fire Stick users warned they 'really could' face jail over dodgy devices

Fire Stick users warned they 'really could' face jail over dodgy devices The maximum penalty is five years in prison and the head of the agency cracking down said the threat is real The remote control of an Amazon Fire TV Stick An urgent warning has been issued to millions of people in the UK who have Amazon Fire Sticks loaded with specific software—as they could face prison. The head of the Federation Against Copyright Theft said people who use Fire Sticks for illegal streaming also risk identity theft, fraud and damage to their TVs and tech thanks to malware. The criminals who sell you the pirate services could even access any camera or microphone attached to your TV or Amazon devices - recording you and your family in your home without you knowing. ‌ An investigation by The Mirror found tens of thousands of adverts for 'pirate' services openly posted on Facebook. Many are for doctored Fire Sticks which offer bundles of thousands of channels for a few pounds a month. One UK mobile number is being used across 800 Facebook Marketplace ads for Fire Stick 'packages' for as little as £6. ‌ Customers are urged to contact the criminals via WhatsApp, and the adverts are posted by over 100 different Facebook users, all accounts created in the last few months, and located across the country. One seller is offereing 'All Sky channels, all sports channels, all football events, Netflix, HBO, Disney +, Amazon Prime and Apple' for as little as £2.50 a month. Prices started at £35 for a six month subscription to £150 for a five-year deal. A football fan wanting to follow all the Premier League action legally would need to pay nearly £50 a month for the cheapest Sky, TNT and Prime deals. Our crooked seller claimed to be from a company called IPTV, claiming: 'It's [an] online service to provide channels on fire stick, smart TVs, android TVs, mobile phone as well. We can provide subscriptions to other countries like Australia, USA and Canada.' Article continues below In January, a man streaming illegal TV to thousands from his home in Birmingham was jailed for two years. Criminals are also harvesting the personal details of thousands of their customers, including their card payment information. Kieron Sharp, chairman of the Federation Against Copyright Theft, said that in the last five years, FACT has been involved in 23 prosecutions leading to 36 criminals being jailed for an average of nearly three years each. In January, Sunny Kumar Kanda from Halifax, West Yorks, was jailed for two years at York Crown Court for supplying modified Fire Sticks through a Facebook group with nearly 4,000 members. In December, FACT led a two-week crackdown with police from 15 forces which targeted 30 illegal services. ‌ Kieron said: 'This has been a problem forever, since the days of pirated video cassettes and DVDs. But the rise of streaming has made things easier for the criminal in the same way as it has made things easier for the legal consumer. Is it any more of a problem than it was years ago? That's very difficult to say. There's no complete picture of the landscape.' The Intellectual Property Office has estimated that 6.2m Brits access illegally streamed TV and 3.9m people watch pirated live sport. Kieron said: 'We have adopted the attitude over the years that we would rather not criminalise the end user. 'If we take out a gang and they have a customer database, we would normally write to the consumers on that customer list telling them 'What you are doing is breaking the law and you will have to stop'. We would like to think that they would start paying for that content. ‌ 'But it is entirely possible that consumers could get swept up in our investigations. It would be a discussion for everybody involved in the business to see if that is an area that we would want to go down. It could happen, it really could. I would never say to any of the consumers through the messaging that we do that they are not going to get prosecuted because that just isn't correct.' When 29-year-old illegal Fire Stick seller Jonathan Edge, from Liverpool, was jailed for more than three years in November, he was also sentenced to two years and three months in prison for personally accessing and viewing the pirated content he distributed. FACT said watching an illegal stream was an offence under the Fraud Act 2006, with a maximum penalty of five year's imprisonment. ‌ Fraudsters can also raid your bank account, steal your identity and even hijack your camera and microphone. 'There is a risk from using these devices, it is not just us saying this,' Kieron said. 'People should be warned about this. There's a real risk of having your identity stolen or similar. If you give over your credit card details, you are giving them to criminals. 'They could get access to the camera on your TV, if it has one, or microphone. There is no safety or security with what you are getting with these modified devices. Some people set them up just to get your personal details.' A recent report by Enders Analysis found three in five who used a physical device for piracy in the last 12 months used a Fire Stick, according to Sky. Amazon said it had made changes to Fire TV to make it harder to stream pirated content and that it warned customers against 'sideloaded apps '. An Amazon spokesperson said: 'Pirated content violates our policies regarding intellectual property rights, and compromises the security and privacy of our customers. Article continues below 'We remain vigilant in our efforts to combat piracy and protect customers from the risks associated with pirated content, which includes prohibiting apps that infringe upon the rights of third parties in our Appstore, and warning customers of the risks associated with installing or using apps from unknown sources.'

Coleen and Wayne Rooney's marriage laid bare after make-or-break decision

Coleen and Wayne Rooney have had some rollercoaster times in their marriage - but as they prepare to celebrate their 12-year anniversary, a source claims they've 'never been stronger' Wayne and Coleen Rooney were photographed looking more down in the dumps than loved-up on a pre-anniversary dinner date last week – but a source tells new they couldn't be happier. The power couple tied the knot on 12 July 2008, with the priest stating that the future would have its 'pleasures and pains, its joys and sorrows'. Truer words were never spoken as the couple, both 39, have since found themselves embroiled in public cheating scandals, brushes with the law, shock job losses and, of course, the famous Wagatha Christie court battle with Rebekah Vardy. 'They've had a lot of heartbreak and troubles,' our source said. ‌ ‌ 'Wayne has put his hands up and apologised for his fair share of them but they've made it through it all – a lot of people thought they wouldn't. The Wagatha court case was another drama but it actually brought them closer together. Wayne was so supportive and that really meant a lot to Coleen. At the moment, their marriage has never been better or stronger." Over the years, the childhood sweethearts, who met on their local Croxteth estate as young teens, have remained united, if a little bruised at times. Former Manchester United ace Wayne was the trigger for most of the dramas, which started with allegations of him having a threesome behind Coleen's back when she was pregnant with their firstborn son, Kai, in 2009. He was then charged with drink-driving in 2017 after being pulled over by police with fellow party-goer Laura Simpson in the passenger seat beside him. Shortly after the arrest, Coleen took to Facebook to deliver a lengthy statement about her marriage, and declared defiantly she would be 'fine on her own' with just her children. 'But I don't want to live like that,' she continued. 'I want to try and continue our marriage and live as a family because that's what I want to do. I know my own mind and it's something I want to try and work on… Yes, it has been a s**t time.' ‌ But that wasn't the last of their so-called s**t times, as the I'm A Celebrity runner-up puts it. They found themselves at the centre of another storm recently when a video published on X led to speculation about Wayne returning to his wayward ways. The heavily-edited clip was filmed in the Devon apartment Wayne lived in during his short-lived tenure as Plymouth Argyle manager, and showed a tracksuit-clad man, believed to be Wayne, letting a woman inside the front door. However, Wayne wasn't prepared to ignore the accusations, and released a statement on Instagram defending himself against the rumours and denying any wrongdoing. Over the years, even Coleen, who shares sons Kai, 15, Klay, 12, Kit, nine, and Cass, seven, with Wayne, has admitted there were some who doubted she would – or should – get over her public heartache. In their bombshell Rooney documentary that aired in 2022, she tackled the topic of their lowest moments head on, and confessed she'd learnt to block out other people's opinions. ‌ 'When you're making those decisions you've got to focus on what you want and not other people because' she said, 'you have so many people saying different things to you. 'Oh, why is she getting back with him?' 'Obviously, I listen to the people that matter to me, my mum and dad; they've always given me a positive outlook on things.' Last year, Coleen had her own positive moment in the spotlight when she was voted into second place on I'm A Celebrity. She was reportedly one of the series' highest paid stars, and didn't disappoint during her three weeks in the jungle. Viewers loved seeing a less polished and often hilarious version of the mum-of-four, who said afterwards she'd had 'so many people coming up to me and saying that they understand my life'. ‌ Speaking on the Stick To Football podcast earlier this year, shortly after Wayne left his role as Plymouth manager, Coleen also addressed the doubts about her marriage, saying, 'People are so opinionated, but I've always thought that it's my life, so let me get on with it – it's got nothing to do with anyone else.' According to our source, the pair remain unshakeable and will continue to weather the storms that come their way. 'They've honestly been through so many ups and downs but Coleen has loved Wayne since she was 16. It's a love that can't be broken and they're really happy to be celebrating their anniversary in such a great place. 'They've got a wonderful family and, despite everything, have managed to remain in love and strong after all these years. Coleen couldn't be happier they've made it through and is now glad she always stuck with it.'
